The thing is even if you are totally happy as a colleague to respect their they/them pronouns, you will inevitably trip up because using he/she is so ingrained in our language. They/them is mainly used in the plural rather than singular. People will make mistakes unintentionally. This could cause all manner of problems for employers if the person takes offence.
