Rishi - A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense

Looked for a thread on this but couldn't see one. BBC reporting this statement by RIshi Sunak today.

"We shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be - they can’t," he says. "A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense."

Rishi Sunak speech: PM scraps rest of HS2 and says A-levels will be replaced - BBC News

In his first speech as PM to the Conservative Party conference, he also proposes trying to create a "smoke-free generation".

It’s the only thing he’s right on but to honest it’s all talk. 13 years to do something and only now a GE is imminently going to be lost does he pipe up. You’re giving him the benefit of the doubt unlike Starmer who has also changed his tune, but less leeway given.

Chersfrozenface · 04/10/2023 19:52

Has Starmer changed his tune?

Do tell

No one’s denying the rights of women but I think the poor, vulnerable, women, disabled etc have all very much been wilfully neglected by this shower, how many thousands of them died in the Covid fiasco ? Or don’t they count ?

They are doubly shafted. They will have no rights as a woman and will not be better off financially under Labour. Everyone seems to be under the false impression that Labour are the fluffy party but they don’t care whatsoever about women disabled or not.

That’s not true. Conservatives were fighting back years ago and have protected women’s single sex spaces and rights, something Labour have pledged to undo!!!!

Be that as it may, he doesn't give a shit about the difficulties the new narrative is causing women, and would be perfectly happy to let trans people self-ID if he thought it would get him votes. Anyone who cannot see this for the cynical dog-whistling it is is politcally incredibly naive.

I don't much care why any of them are opposed to self ID. That's not a luxury women have. I'd rather have a government opposed to self ID for the wrong reasons than one in favour of it for any reason.

I wish it didn't have to be the Tories.

I wish all the other parties weren't determined to throw women and girls under the bus for the benefit of a small number of male trans people.

I saw this response to the usual hyperbole on Twitter.

Rishi - A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense
ketchup07070 · 04/10/2023 20:02

@Lastchancechica So, Labour's dp has a significant section on policing reform VAWG, schools, ending gender pay gap, upholding the equality act and protecting single sex spaces. I don't agree with all of it, the statement of building more housing is slightly concerning to me because of the impact on the environment, but it mostly suits me. So you don't need to be worried that I don't know what I may possibly be voting for.

They don't even care about the women in their own party. They treated Rosie Duffield with nothing short of contempt for her heretical opinions about women and reality.

Labours conference is going to be very interesting!

im assuming there are TW Labour Party members desperate to get up on stage & have a go at Rishi - will keir let them?

Maerchentante · 04/10/2023 20:12

A friend of mine just linked a Reel from "safe space vids" (or similar) in his Instagram stories with a reaction to that part of Rishi Sunak's speech.
Apparently Refugees and Transgender People are the most vulnerable in society.

Had I rolled my eyes any harder at the latter, they'd have been stuck.

I predict a fucking shit show. I can’t imagine how the women in Labour continue to stay silent???? Why?

DreamItDoIt · 04/10/2023 20:30

It's all very well Rishi saying this but they have been in power for 13 years and we have seen trans right taking priority over womens rights. The NHS, judiciary, prisons etc all captured. What have they done? Nothing. Can't even get guidance out to schools.

Words are easy, let's see some action.

I bet Labour are shitting it, busy rewriting and working out how they can ‘side step’ the woman problem in general. The pressure must be immense this evening.

But you have to care whether voting for the Tories on the basis of this ONE issue will make things worse for women and girls on a host of other fronts. There is NO POINT saving women and girls from THIS issue if it means throwing their economic and educational wellbeing, their health service, the desperately needed reform of their police force, etc etc etc etc, in the bin.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 04/10/2023 20:40

The thing is, there will be no “their” when it comes to women if Labour don’t sort themselves out.

if the definition of women includes men then how can you improve women’s healthcare, or girls educational wellbeing? It will no longer be “women’s” will it? It will be “people’s”

I mean just take a look at this https://www.wired.com/story/grace-hopper-celebration-career-fair-men/

Men Overran a Job Fair for Women in Tech

The Grace Hopper Celebration is meant to unite women in tech. This year droves of men came looking for jobs.

If the health service is refusing women the right to safety, privacy abd dignity by insisting they accept transwomen in female spaces and as healthcare workers providing care, sometimes of an intimate nature, that will be OK, will it?

If the health service is medicating people with harmful substances and surgically mutilating them, how about that?

If the police are lying about suspects when seeking them, calling them "women" when they are men, will that be alright? Or when the police are lecturing women, arresting them, seizing their property, for saying or writing facts, because that is "hate crime", will that be just fine?

Between that tech fair and the swimming category with no takers, it's blindingly obvious what the agenda of gender ideology is. And those examples are just in the last few days!

If you can't define us, you can't protect us. It's that simple. Removing our words and definition is sinister AF. Any other group - any other at all - and no one would be expected to stand for it. And no other group would be chided for being "single issue" as though that's wrong.

Just women. It's just us who have to roll over and accept all this shit.

Revealed: Full draft policy platform that could form 2024 Labour manifesto - LabourList | Latest UK Labour Party news, analysis and comment

If anyone is interested here's the 2024 Labour draft policy, subject to change and amendment, but an indication of what their aims may be.

I had a quick flick through the Labour List page you put a link to. I couldn’t see anything about trans rights - but I may well have missed it. Is there anything in the Labour policy platform that addresses the issue?

@WhileMyDishwasherGentlyWeeps Found this:

ketchup07070 · 04/10/2023 20:54
  • Introduce a full, trans-inclusive ban on conversion practices while protecting legitimate talking therapies, closing any consent loopholes that remain on the statute book
  • Build consensus and modernise the process of gender recognition to remove indignities for trans people, while upholding the Equality Act, its protected characteristics and its provision for single-sex exemptions.
