Rishi - A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense

Looked for a thread on this but couldn't see one. BBC reporting this statement by RIshi Sunak today.

"We shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be - they can’t," he says. "A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense."

Rishi Sunak speech: PM scraps rest of HS2 and says A-levels will be replaced - BBC News

In his first speech as PM to the Conservative Party conference, he also proposes trying to create a "smoke-free generation".

He doesn't either believe or disbelieve what he's saying

I disagree on this point. I think he absolutely does believe that men are men and women are women. In fact, I think almost every adult in the world believes this too.

But he'd definitely say the exact opposite if it would get him elected.

DrCoconut · 04/10/2023 17:57

If Rishi is so passionate about supporting women he can start by looking at what his party is doing to single mums with disabled children. The tories will say anything to cling to power now and there is a real risk that people will fall for it and vote them back in.

MsJinks · 04/10/2023 18:00

The phrasing of it sounded to me as if he just doesn’t believe (or want to be seen to believe) there are any trans people at all - there was no caveat/aside even to acknowledge those who may have transitioned or who may genuinely be individually struggling. I felt he just totally trashed these people just to be extremely clear on his ‘views’ for those concerned about the current progression of trans ideology, and gain that vote.
The Tories already trashed migrants, sometimes teachers/drs, previously single parents, unemployed - and so on. They would certainly trash women if it meant a better overall vote somehow.
That said, is it even relevant as few, if any of their actions, back their rhetoric and they blatantly only really care for their own selves and very close buddies - everyone else’s ‘rights’ are irrelevant and can be quashed when suits.
I would take a close look at how they choose to reduce rights/trample over rights where they can now whenever suits, and decide if that’s how you want to be treated when your rights are inconvenient or a vote loser, before you give them your vote.

Thank god we finally have some common sense!!

We have made progress peeps!!
It would have been unimaginable for a PM to say that a few years ago, but here we are!! 🎉🎉

Labour look desperately out of touch - as per usual with Starmer flailing around with penises 🤢

Lastchancechica · 04/10/2023 18:01

I am delighted someone is standing up for us and our girls 💪🏻💪🏻

Desecratedcoconut · 04/10/2023 18:02

Or, the Labour Party could come to its senses, aim to represent women in parliament with a functioning definition of who they are, and then those who are prepared to vote on this single issue would be free to assess the parties on a different criteria.

I agree actually at the moment a woman only has one party to vote for if she wants to be recognised and protected by law.

Chersfrozenface · 04/10/2023 15:18

Not a basic minimum we can expect from Labour, the LibDems, the Greens, the SNP, Plaid...

So he's definitely one up.

He's not one up, he's just fractionally less far down. His massive problem is that he can't point to one positive thing that the Conservatives have done for women's rights in the last 13.5 years, nor can he put forward any sensible explanation for failing to do anything about this particular issue over the same period.

Chersfrozenface · 04/10/2023 18:08

Transitioned? Do you mean changed sex? Because they can't, no human being can.

There are people who call themselves "trans". But they are either male or female, at conception, at birth, and all their lives.

Interested to know what laws and policies this Tory government have successfully put in place to protect women.

EasternStandard · 04/10/2023 18:10

It was only months ago when certain posters were up and down the boards telling women to put their 'single issue' away because nobody was interested, politicians weren't interested and the general public weren't interested.

And yet here we are at the last conference before an election and Rishi can see the leverage in setting it out as a wedge issue.

Yes they were and they were wrong

Starmer will mither about ‘culture wars’ but he’s behind on this

BristolBlueGlasses · 04/10/2023 18:13

The culture wars need 'mithering' on though don't they? Aren't they a distraction put about by manipulative people for their own ends? Almost always rat bag people.

Culture warrior Laurence Fox is having a bad day I see.

EasternStandard · 04/10/2023 18:15

I don’t follow Laurence Fox so no idea about that

Women’s rights yep make all the noise we can. Anyone who responds with the culture wars line can swing

Desecratedcoconut · 04/10/2023 18:16

How rude to suggest that women's rights, women's biology and women's spaces should be mangled by their reframing through the lens of a culture war.

Me too

BristolBlueGlasses · 04/10/2023 18:20

@EasternStandard You raised the line 'culture wars'.

MsJinks · 04/10/2023 18:22

Well I’m not sure what wording is preferred but those people who have have effectively lived/tried to live as the opposite sex to that in which they were born, and probably had surgery/treatment that supports this life. Quite apart from the current debate on whether this is pushed/overdone and safe spaces etc I am sure it is recognised that some people do and have previously had genuine reasons to feel they are in the wrong body - I felt that this was dismissive of these people and unnecessarily so just to completely confirm the vote winning ‘it’s not possible to change sex’ statement.
Don’t think this is anything to do with protecting women’s rights though - it’s just another catchy phrase for the lectern to gain votes - seems to be working better than stop the boats though.

EasternStandard · 04/10/2023 18:22

BristolBlueGlasses · 04/10/2023 18:20

@EasternStandard You raised the line 'culture wars'.

Yes because that’s usually Starmer’s defence

As I said. He will likely come back with that

ArabellaScott · 04/10/2023 18:23

I am sure it is recognised that some people do and have previously had genuine reasons to feel they are in the wrong body

What could these 'genuine' reasons be?

In Scotland what he said would be a hate crime soon

police special unit are getting their traing on this

It would be fun if he said it in Scotland!

Assess the issues according to their own priorities and vote accordingly, you mean?

Or do you mean people are just too stupid to make what you think is the correct decision?

BristolBlueGlasses · 04/10/2023 18:25

EasternStandard · 04/10/2023 18:22

So a bit odd that you said whoever says culture wars can 'swing'.

ResisterRex · 04/10/2023 18:26

Some really strange takes on here. If it's throwing trans people under the bus to state reality, then it must be throwing women and men under the bus to impose gender ideology?

HS2 can be reversed. Our rights are gone once they're gone. It's an insulting take.

Just saying it for votes is another odd one. It's their job to get votes?! Starmer could say it too. Nowt stopping him. Nowt stopping him apologising to Duffield, either.

I see the LGBA was refused a stand at Labour's conference again. That speaks volumes.

EasternStandard · 04/10/2023 18:26

BristolBlueGlasses · 04/10/2023 18:25

No I mean it. Anyone who responds with that line can go away (maybe swing is a term not used here)

ArabellaScott · 04/10/2023 18:27

it must be throwing women and men under the bus to impose gender ideology?

Yes, it is. Most especially, throwing vulnerable children and young people under the bus.
