Looked for a thread on this but couldn't see one. BBC reporting this statement by RIshi Sunak today.

"We shouldn’t get bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be - they can’t," he says. "A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense."

Rishi Sunak speech: PM scraps rest of HS2 and says A-levels will be replaced - BBC News

In his first speech as PM to the Conservative Party conference, he also proposes trying to create a "smoke-free generation".

Everybody knows that trans people exist - the discussion lands on whether we should build legislature and redraft reality to align with their dysmorphic accounts of self.

Just saying it for votes is another odd one. It's their job to get votes?!

It's their job to run the country effectively and has been for the past 12 years ish. If they'd done that effectively and kept any previous promises his comments today might be more convincing.

Saying anything, whether they believe it or not or whether they have any intention or capability to fulfill that promise, just for votes is not their job.

No I mean it. Anyone who responds with that line can go away (maybe swing is a term not used here)

It's not the term, it's that it was YOU who said it.

Well I’m not sure what wording is preferred but those people who have have effectively lived/tried to live as the opposite sex to that in which they were born, and probably had surgery/treatment that supports this life. Quite apart from the current debate on whether this is pushed/overdone and safe spaces etc I am sure it is recognised that some people do and have previously had genuine reasons to feel they are in the wrong body - I felt that this was dismissive of these people and unnecessarily so just to completely confirm the vote winning ‘it’s not possible to change sex’ statement.
Don’t think this is anything to do with protecting women’s rights though - it’s just another catchy phrase for the lectern to gain votes - seems to be working better than stop the boats though.

Don't care if it's "dismissive" of their feelings - feelings don't mean shit when women and girls have been RAPED by males wanting their precious "feelings" affirmed.

It's fucking FACT not "vote winning" to say "people can't change sex". Jesus Christ.

Yes I’m aware.

I am predicting what Starmer will respond with.

BCCoach · 04/10/2023 18:32

@Floisme i live in hope that it is like the sporting world where it only took one governing body to point out that the emperor had no clothes for all the others to breathe a sigh of relief and stop the nonsense.

Somanycats · 04/10/2023 18:33

I'm so worried this will lose Labour the election. Starmer looks like a complete idiot every time he addresses (or fails to properly address) this issue. It's not difficult,or complex in anyway for most people. Sex is binary and this is non negotiable for everyone except the tiny genderwoo bubble. If Starmer ever says even once that a man can become a woman, he is toast and the electorate will not believe a word he says after that.

Globe22 · 04/10/2023 18:34

Still not voting for the Tory shitshow!

Peterpiperspickledpepper · 04/10/2023 18:40

I can’t ignore the fact that certain posters on here were quite enthusiastically agreeing with Braverman’s comments about immigrants a few days ago on a previous thread.

It's Labour's to oppose effectively. They've been an enormous letdown in that regard. They should have had the government by the balls on this. Instead they collaborated with it (eg that Facebook group for hunting TERFs). It doesn't bode well for governing at all.

Reversing or rowing back from a decision like self-ID is so often forgotten. We'd have gone Full Canada by now if the incumbents hadn't held their hands up and halted it. Which they did.

Desecratedcoconut · 04/10/2023 18:45

Do we have to do a ducking stool challenge to find out who are the bonafide Tories and those of us willing to vote on this issue now - or are we all tarred by association? Can I just go straight to burning?

maltravers · 04/10/2023 18:45

It’s interesting that this has finally broken through to the mainstream. I’d say it is becoming clear that your average person is sick to death of having women harmed, everyone’s language mangled and monitored for wrongthink and crazy policies being imposed by gender loons and their craven forelock tuggers. I was at a dinner party a few nights ago where two Labour voting men in their 60s and 70s were rolling their eyes over this and expressing their concern. Starmer needs to watch his step on this IMO.

TooBigForMyBoots · 04/10/2023 18:51

In the end, it doesn't matter. He won't make any changes to protect women and children. Today was his last conference as PM and leader of the Conservative Party.

Desecratedcoconut · 04/10/2023 18:58

Oh another round of nobody cares and it doesn't matter? The fact that there is a chasm between the majority of voters and the people who claim to represent them, about something as important as sex and reality, is fine by you- so long as you're winning?

Peterpiperspickledpepper · 04/10/2023 18:58

@Desecratedcoconut its not as simple as that is it ? If the Tories had governed impeccably the last 13 years as well as advocating for women’s rights maybe people wouldn’t be as morally torn.

Peterpiperspickledpepper · 04/10/2023 19:00

Fact is they haven’t. They have been duplicitous over many things so why should people believe this.

maltravers · 04/10/2023 19:00

I’d say he will try to make those changes - it’s politics. To put Labour on a spike in the run up to the GE. Do Labour oppose those changes? Civil war in Labour ranks may follow and the subject will not be out of the news with Labour looking like boot lickers to the gender Borg. Will Labour vote to keep TW out of female wards/sports/jails? It will be a rocky ride for them. Sunak has been saving this up for the run up to the election, quite clearly in my view.

Desecratedcoconut · 04/10/2023 19:01

If Labour would give up their luxury beliefs and contempt for those who don't share them, I'd vote for them. But I'm not trading in my sex class, they can whistle.

maltravers · 04/10/2023 19:01

Boot lickers even!

What a load of shit that I didn't say.Hmm

Peterpiperspickledpepper · 04/10/2023 19:05

@Desecratedcoconut i would say you have the luxury to treat this as a single vote GE. Many millions don’t.

Of course it matters. We have a party of government called the Conservatives who don't know their own name anymore. And an opposition who should be the natural party for women, who are too scared to define them.

Do you trust the Conservatives to actually follow their own rhetoric? Do you trust Labour not to capitulate to gender activists/activist MPs in their party?

What a bunch of Hobson's Choices.

HelenaTranscart · 04/10/2023 19:06

I'm cynical about the Tories too and the timing of this announcement, but trying to see the positives. He's said what others have been too scared to and hopefully this will make the opposition parties sit up and think. I hate the Tory party but on this single issue I'll vote tactically to oust those who have thrown women and children under the bus.

maltravers · 04/10/2023 19:16

He’s not doing it out of the goodness of his heart. He’s waited until now and he’ll do it now to harm Labour before the election. Labour need to sort themselves out on this.

Desecratedcoconut · 04/10/2023 19:21

Which other group of people would you think it were a luxury belief for them to want their class to be truthfully represented in Parliament?
