Yes¡ Just done a little victory dance. I hope it really is as good as it sounds.

On Tuesday, Steve Barclay will announce proposals to push back against “wokery” in the health service that has led to women’s rights being increasingly sidelined. The changes would give men and women the right to be cared for on wards only shared by people of their own biological sex, and to have intimate care provided by those of the same sex.Mr Barclay said the plan would mean the return of “a common-sense approach to sex and equality”, ensuring that women’s dignity was protected and their voices heard. The proposals follow concerns from patients and staff about biological men being allowed on to women’s hospital wards. In 2021, NHS guidance said trans patients could be placed on single-sex wards on the basis of the gender with which they identified.

I do feel sorry for someone I know, who is M to F trans and has had bottom surgery (ie has no penis) and additionally has had surgery to get boobs. Although born male, she would pose no risk to women/girls. On a male ward, she could easily be gawped at/worse as she has boobs and all the bottom surgery.

it’s a difficult problem, but there definitely should not be anyone capable of rape (ie who has a penis) on a women’s ward.

Respectfully, many of us have learned the hard way that a man doesn't need a penis to be a danger to a woman or girl. I'm not really bothered how successfully he's cosplaying as a woman, I still wouldn't feel safe nor comfortable having him in a bed next to me when I'm at my most vulnerable.

Most male-bodied people are nice and don’t pose any risk to women.

The problem is that the ones who do, don’t come with a handy sign.

So, basic safe-guarding has - until now - meant we just keep all men out of women’s single-sex spaces.

VAWG is endemic. Making it easier for male-bodied people (some of whom will be predators) to have access to women and girls is not the way forward.

The NHS making use if the separate fields for 'sex' and 'gender identity' would be a start. I believe there is the option but it's not used.

They have very thorough, well thought through policies on this - because mixing up sex and gender is medically dangerous. They completely ignore those policies.

My husband poses no risk to women. Neither does my brother, brothers-in-law, late father, FIL, and many men I know.

Not one of them belong on the women’s ward.

Exactly. An altered male body doesn’t change that.

Thanks, that is the thing I was thinking of but had no way of finding!

Boiledbeetle · 03/10/2023 09:33

I'll believe it when they actually stop talking about doing it and actually do it.

Whatwouldscullydo · 03/10/2023 09:34

We need to stop with this "feeling sorry for..." malarkey.

I thought they are all fully grown mentally stable males who have made a perfectly legitimate decision in full knowledge of the consequences? What makes them any more vulnerable than any other male ? I mean they had a choice not to chop off body parts and get a boob job. If they couldn't cope with the alleged increased vulnerability then dont get it done. But don't expect everyone else to bail you out if your decisions. Own it. Like an adult

The GRA 2004 compelled all government bodies to record gender for those who have them, alongside sex. Trusts basically made an arse of it and confused the two. In 2008 a DoH document 'Trans: a practical guide for the NHS' was heavily biased towards accommodating men with gender identity in womens wards, and gaslighting women who complained.

In 2010 the policy "eliminating mixed sex accommodation" the governing knew they were talking about gender, not sex, but used the word sex anyway.

The situation has been years in the making and has always relied on the confusion between the words gender and sex. And more importantly, the privacy of those men who are given female id by the state.

Where we are now - women being sexually assaulted and are told that the man in the ward with them is a woman, is the result of politician of all parties - conservative, labour and liberal demonstrate either being incompetent or willfully working to get males into womens wards.

Edit to add: unless politicians understand how we got here, and the policies that add to the confusion, any new announcements is likely to be a sticking plaster and wont solve anything long term.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 03/10/2023 09:45

Well said, Zutt. The deliberate confusion is deeply embedded in so many policies and guidance documents that digging it out is a hell of a job.

ZuttZeVootEeeVo · 03/10/2023 09:46

Yes. We need to stop thinking that the people who are hurt most by all of this are the men who want to be in womens spaces.

It's another small step in the right direction.

Interesting - Keir Starmer from April. I don't remember this, it means he's in a tough place and can only support action

“For me, patient security, safety and peace of mind comes first. That’s why we support single-sex wards,” he said, confirming that he meant single sex on the basis of biology.
“I think most hospitals want much greater clarity from the Government in terms of guidance.”

"Sir Keir, who in 2021 said it was “not right” to say that only women have a cervix, also warned against medical campaigns that caused confusion by using terms such as “people with a cervix” rather than “women”.twitter.com/LabWomenDec/status/1648821377460232192?t=B3gbg2SC30nYR9tShTwZ_Q&s=19

It's good news. I really don't mind genuine trans women using women's safe spaces. I think if you've had the full sherbangle then being in a men's toilet or hospital ward is unsafe and inappropriate. Unfortunately trans rights have been hijacked by self IDing cross dressers who mean women harm, which ha marginalised genuine trans people. I don't know what the answer is, but at least they have stopped sacrificing women's rights.

LizzieSiddal · 03/10/2023 09:56

@ResisterRex thanks for The Times link.

ArabellaScott · 03/10/2023 09:59

genuine trans women

What distinguishes a 'genuine' transwoman from a 'non-genuine' one?

Whats a genuine transwomen? 2 woman a week are killed by their partners. How many transwomen are hurt/killed a week in the UK?

There are more transpeople in prison fir murder than have been murdered in the past 10 years

Why is male violence towards both other males and women, womens problem to solve ?

Spaces are designated male/female/men/women not men/male and anyone who might not be safe in the.mens

"How important are single sex wards for you?"

nauticant · 03/10/2023 10:04

This going to be discussed on Woman's Hour. And it's with Emma Barnett so the presenter should at least be engaging with the issue.

WinterTrees · 03/10/2023 10:04
