Shock horror!

Both Róisín and Chimamanda interviewed in the Guardian with no "stains!"

Someone somewhere on the internet called him the Witchfinder General. I think they might have a point.

So after reading the delight that is Brand; quite how does bbc 6 music live with cancelling Roisin for her comments about child protection ? 🤬

Longtime Roisin fan and terfy lurker - cannot believe she is scapegoat du jour. Surely she isn't the first musician to express an opinion?
This is the only content left on Sounds - but if you don't know her work watch her at Glasto last year:

Sorry that link is to Woman's Hour this year which I have not yet listened to...
Here's Glasto

Just been to John Lydon’s performance at Buckley Tivoli. Confrontational and provocative as ever.

I can’t even consolidate this in my head- so fucking angry

She has announced on Twitter that she has a gig tomorrow night - it's at The Boileroom in Guildford, a small venue I've been to a few times and can recommend for an up close and personal gig!

https://recordcorner.co.uk/roisin-murphy---in-store-gig--signed-album-174699-p.asp

It’s my local venue and I bloody missed it! AND I’m on their mailing list and everything. I’m actually pleasantly surprised that they had her. Dom who
runs the boileroom is lovely but quite right on, they host ‘womxn’s workshops’ etc. Anyway, it was a complete sellout as you can imagine so good for a great small venue and of course for Róisín.

I'm afraid when it's not just the little kids who are mixed up, but also civic society that are confused, and when its not just Big Pharma that's fucked up, but also the elites who are happy to memory hole those who don't toe their line, then yes, a good spirit like Róisín is dispensable.

I've never seen a creed like trans activism that ostensibly is all about not judging, but at heart is the most judgemental thing I've seen in my 59 years living on this planet.

ArabeIIaScott · 17/09/2023 22:16

Still no sign of Roisin on BBC 6.

I see they have Iggy Pop on presenting a show today, though.

And I see they've not bothered to scrub Russell Brand off the website.

'In an illuminating and incredibly heartfelt conversation, Dua Lipa is joined by comedian, actor, YouTube star, and author Russell Brand, who tells all about sobriety. From asking for help to surrounding himself with a group of mentors he can turn to for wisdom, to now being a position where he too can offer guidance and resources to those in need, Russell opens up about the role that ego – the sort that a life in the public eye necessitates – can play when it comes to navigating a healthy, wholesome, and fulfilled life in the spotlight. Is 'post ironic' an expression?

WarriorN · 18/09/2023 09:40

Ugh.

Counting the minutes till Emma returns to woman's hour tbh.

I won't be cancelling licence fees etc. I want to be able to witness what these dicks do and hold them to account. And cheer on those that are trying ti effect change behind the scenes.

One (small but also massive) issue with brand is he latterly ran his own empire with no HR to answer to. When the other empires such as the bbc started to be unable to let him continue.

I do know of current bbc employees, including those who present, who are fed up to the nines with tbe lack of balance. Met one at a local feminist meeting back in 2019. Honestly thought I'd known her from university but it turns out she used to read the local news 😆. We both had 1 yr olds at the time.

I've seen the Brand programme and very disturbing it was, too. So I've taken time to think.. Let's not forget, I'm a man - but that might actually be an advantage here, in the 'Why do men do this ? ' area.

I take all of this personally as every time you get a Brand or the activists playing the cards they play, it makes it that much more difficult for men in general, just to get along - never mind forming relationships of any kind - with women.

The Russell Brand situation is, in my opinion, qualitiatively different to the attempt to deny media coverage to Roisin but Brendan O'Neill did point to one important parallel, that I have to pursue.

Namely, the idea of a man (or men) holding a position of power or influence over a woman, where they demand a compromise from that woman.

In Mr Brand's case, it is suggested that younger members of staff on tv productions were invited to loosen their morals and 'make themselves available' to him. The allegations suggest that he routinely took advantage of that.

In the Roisin situation, we have individuals who demand something a little more subtle - a kind of patronage relationship, in which they seek influence over her, shifting her focus away from 'I sing for everyone, about everything'.

Your Kylies of this world might be happy to go along with that, simply because she is actually a professional actress - first and foremost - rather like Margot Wotsername playing Barbie, it's a role. She'll be whatever you'd like her to be.

But Roisin's not having that - I'd suggest that, in a sense, the guys involved blew it because they tried to force her, coerce her, to do something they wanted her to do for them. When, all along, it was their job to do that, for themselves.

Meanwhile, Roisin met the obligation of making that statement but it was up to us, to do our job to back her up - and didn't we do well, as someone once said. With the support we've shown, she did that quite assertive Guardian interview.

As I've hinted before, there's a happy medium, where she does what she wants to do, you do your thing and the whole turns out to be more than the sum of the parts. Their Achiiles heel was wanting power over her.

One has to ask, with his quite detailed account of his experiences, would someone like Andy Bell be allowed to become an adult gay man these days ? He's clearly not female and neither are his views of sex - the testosterone is flowing and he's not messing about.. People get confused about gay blokes being effeminate but I don't think this is, in any way.

Heard Moloko today on a BBC advert advertising a run of 90s dramas on BBC4. Have they ‘uncancelled’ her?

Biffology · 23/09/2023 21:58

@ACatCalledPushka

Who knows.. What matters is what YOU listen to. I don't care what music Bruno Brookes likes. They can get off on Kick-a-TERF all day long, for all I care.

MrInbetween · 24/09/2023 19:36

To my shame I did not know her music….well what a discovery this last few weeks.

Bloody luvs her music.

Perfect for:

  • Driving to work to get you started for the day
  • Doing house work
  • Running

Sorry sadly I’m a boring bastard and that’s the extent of how I rock.

I really hope BBC stops being a twat soon.
