Did anyone watch that Newsnight interview with Kirsty Wark interviewing the excruciatingly pretentious RY X.

No pushback at all from KW.

https://twitter.com/BBCNewsnight/status/1702454273269780798

KW: Do you support that alledged cancellation (of Róisín Murphy by Ninja Tunes)

RY X: You know what I think about this and as a large and zooming back and thinking about the idea of accountability verses cancel culture. For me there’s a really interesting idea about how do we hold people accountable and allow them to be surrounded by people reflecting to them their communication and their choices. Obviously, we need boundaries in society and we need to know when to cut people who are saying and / or leading in unhealthy ways but at the same time the idea of accountability is this much more beautiful reflective surface where people can grow and become their own role models by saying “I honour that I made mistakes and I’m prepared to stand in that”. And I think at this point a situation like this is a good example of where we need to look at it and say how do we hold accountability and also allow there to be a reframing and a relearning.

Wow. That's such incoherent drivel. I have no idea what he's actually trying to say. Who is he?

'I was personally disappointed to learn that Róisín Murphy has a Facebook account.' claims the writer of this article.

Dammit I have t honed my hit airplane mode mode yet.

Is that laura Barton the writer who used to work for the Guardian?

She did a very thoughtful radio 4 prog (or 6 music actually??) recently where it appears she completely abandoned her very conventional life and job at the Guardian to follow some sort of music themed travel and has written a book.

I wonder if there are any links to the toxic guardian environment?

Some men absolutely love taking about how 'disappointing they've found such and such a woman. You can tell they are getting a kick out of imagining anyone is interested in gaining their approval.

Biffology · 16/09/2023 08:09

The article :

'Over the last week or so, it has been awkward to witness both music fans and album reviewers wrestle with the confusion of loathing Murphy’s views and loving her new record.'

What views ? Thus far, we've had one statement, which was leaked from a private place. The author appears ignorant of these facts. And neglects to mention the vile misogynistic abuse that was hurled at Murphy.

This article appears to suggest that the cancellers are beyond question and we have to compromise to fit into their world. Dance to their tune. We don't.

I'd suggest that actual, proper music fans worthy of that name, have been buying the record, going to the shows, etc. The bogus 'music fans' this author refers to have been too busy loathing..

The BBC's evasiveness about the 'Kick TERFs' song demands that we see shades of meaning that are not there. Meanwhile, they shadow-ban Murphy and crow about doing this, whilst playing the victim about being 'accused'.

We are society-at-large, they are a lobby, composed of middle-class media people.

I'm desperately hoping the t shirt I bought with my album of hers arrives today so I can wear it to radio 2 in the park tomorrow

From the Independent article...

Of course, many have questioned the motivation behind that apology, but I think we should always be allowed to evolve our thinking; to mess up and say we were wrong, and fearful, and uninformed.

Is this the new "be kind" brand of trans activism where you pretend that you are tolerant enough to give people space to learn and admit they have been mistaken before you drag them to the stake to be burned? Funny how it is presumed that the learning only goes in one direction and it is never the speaker who may have to fess up and admit that they were wrong.

WarriorN · 16/09/2023 09:25

That comes from all the arm chair psychology stuff around mistake making and moving forward and humans make mistakes etc.

It doesn't work unless there's also the mechanism of free speech and debate to stop that becoming simply another form of authoritarian or totalitarian coercive control.

The problem is that when mainstream media acts like this it leads to and breeds the type of 'alternative media' (easily generated due to social media and modern tech) that's claiming to be the "truth, for free speech and anti totalitarian." But is also no better and usually a front for individuals to make a lot of money, con people and be abusive.

@Signalbox

Quite. They see it as their job to stand in judgement over the rest of us - their atrocities being 'just one of those things'.

Also, how did these people determine what Roisin Murphy's views are, about this issue. She said one thing.

And not a word about the surveillance methods they employ.

AnxiousPangolin · 16/09/2023 11:08

Quite surprised to see the Guardian publish an interview with her without adding some text to appease the TRAs.

Biffology · 16/09/2023 11:12

@AnxiousPangolin

For me, the press have varying levels of reliability, as per their respective agendas. The Guardian and BBC are towards the lower end of that scale - they only have themselves to blame for that.

The Twitter people remind me of that vegetable shop owner..

Pink Floyd - Vegetable man

@ArabeIIaScott

The vegetable shop owner mentioned in the interview gets off on women cleaning his poo - nice ! .. Havel's one is altogether different..

This interview is turning out like that 'apology'..

What was the last lie that you told?
I don’t tell lies. Or if I do, I’m a psycho and I don’t realise I’m lying.

I presume The Guardian would label that a 'dog-whistle'

https://www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/sep/16/roisin-murphy-interview-nfbntw

All the previous Q&As have comments allowed but they've turned them off for this one. Not sure if it's to avoid abuse of RM or because they're scared that readers will actually post in support of her...

WhereAreWeNow · 16/09/2023 12:40

Really pleased to see the Guardian Q&A. There's also a positive write up of the album further on in the magazine, in the culture bit. A sign that there's a tussle at the Guardian between the Laura Snape/Owen Jones types and the grown ups?

I couldn't take this guy seriously. Stupid hat on in the studio. Smouldering looks to the camera with those limpid come to bed eyes.

But worst of all was Kirsty. I seem to remember her being fairly anti BS from a decade ago. Her lack of calling this joker out just adds fuel to the fire of cancel culture.

All this "leave space for people to reflect"...or else...or else what?

Any artist tacitly supporting the muzzling of another artist is so bad. We are deep into Cultural Revolution and New Five Year Plan dangerous territory.

Biffology · 16/09/2023 12:46

They know what they think. It’s us they don’t want to hear from.

Why else would they have ‘I want to be posh’ as the headline ?

it’s to make out that she desires to be a kind of Margot Ledbetter / Phoebe Wally-Binge-type. Obviously, that’s another projection from the Actual Alices in this picture.. Whose privilege (in the daddy has a dahling little pied-a-terre in M’rocceau sense) has been showing recently.. Dinner’s been so TENSE lately, sweetly..

EarthSight · 16/09/2023 14:25

@RealityFan Little did I think our lot would really behave so badly

This is part of the problem I'm afraid, because some men reserve their worst for behind closed doors and some questionable behaviour is shrugged off as boys being boys, or men joking around.
