Delighted to see RM on Buzzcocks this week, not sure when it was filmed but the episode was still shown at least.

Rod Liddle has just appeared in The Spectator, a LIDDLE late, giving a luke-warm review of the album - the gist of his opinion is that he doesn't understand why people bought the album 'in solidarity'. Is this basically him saying 'Fuck her' ? Sounds that way to me.

He thinks there's two reasons to not buy the album, the first being the cancellation attempt, which he doesn't endorse - thanks Rod, you're a mensch ! - But he does think the album isn't very good - so for him, the intelligent thing to do is turn the page of the newspaper and 'let the market decide'

That sounds suspiciously like a weaselly way of 'opting out', which makes 'so what ?' sound like an intelligent response to what's been going on. Perhaps the BBC will also follow this suburban 'it's just not to our taste' line. Talk about 'good men doing nothing'

Thing is, while Mr Liddle was probably picking his nose and probably wondering what might be a suave way of making doing nothing sound like doing something, the rest of us - the little people - Made A Statement. When that dawns on him, he might be ready to acknowledge that the market did, indeed, decide - that's kind-of what happened when the album did so well ?

He might scratch his head at people's motivations for buying into something that he didn't think was worth it - but that idea of doing something on principle might come in handy to Mr Liddle, one day, should he find himself in hot-water in the future, and be looking for support from wider society - including those who he has considered unworthy of that...

HelenFisksBrownSuit · 29/09/2023 19:30

I mean, what does Rod Liddle know about electronic dance music?

Why is he even reviewing it. That's like me reviewing a jazz or heavy metal album (genres I've no interest in) and complaining that they're no good.
Also why is the cancellation attempt a reason not to buy the album.
I loved Moloko back in the day but hadn't realised Róisín had gone solo. Thoroughly enjoying her new album which yes I did buy in solidarity.

WaveyGodshawk · 29/09/2023 19:55

He's a plonker anyway

mach2 · 29/09/2023 20:03

Liddle is a bloated bag of spite.

Biffology · 29/09/2023 20:35

@HelenFisksBrownSuit Apparently very Liddle - geddit ? Seems he prefers noisy guitarry stuff. But he's no Robert Christgau, is he ?

@WaveyGodshawk It is more than a little insulting to the people who bought the album ; making it a success - which they helped to do - is kind-of all you've got as a weapon against cancellation. Though I suppose Liddle's harrumphing 'bogeyman' status makes his dismissal of the record an asset to the rest of us, in a back-handed way. He doesn't like the record and those internet nutters don't like Roisin.. She must be sound and her record must be good !

WaveyGodshawk · 29/09/2023 21:29

I haven't read the article and I don't really want to! Even though I try to read voices I don't agree with.
But from what you've said @Biffology it seems mean spirited from him.
Which is not surprising

Biffology · 29/09/2023 21:54

@WaveyGodshawk

Let's be honest here - you've got much better things to do, such as listening to what, thus far, amounts to 17 years' worth of Roisin's solo material : you've got all manner of fascinating twists-and-turns ahead of you.

One detail that you might overlook along the way is the 8-year gap between Overpowered and the Mi Senti EP (I won't spoil the suprise of what that is) . So you've also got the benefit of being able to 'fast-forward' through that !

MrsOvertonsWindow · 30/09/2023 21:21

That's another good article from Jo Bartosch. She's right. Now that #nodebate has finally been binned the gruesome reality is evident - compelled speech, fantasy over facts, diminished safeguarding for children, medical experimentation and increasingly unhinged demands for complete capitulation from the population at large.

The real life consequences of #OperationLetThemSpeak .

Biffology · 30/09/2023 21:33

@MrsOvertonsWindow

Strident views, there !

Biffology · 15/09/2023 09:06

Over on the other thread, evidence is emerging of an agenda at the BBC - it seems they can't play any Roisin Murphy's music but a song with the lyric 'Kick TERFs all day' is absolutely fine by them...

Wtf

BCCoach · 02/10/2023 10:05

I'm not sure whether Rod Liddle hates women or himself more.

Biffology · 02/10/2023 12:24

@BCCoach

I suppose he can't get his head around the concept that there's aspects of it, that are too, er, womany for him..?

This is why I've been trying to encourage people on here to approach things from a feminist angle.. This would help us to get away from 'Roisin is a nut with loopy opinions, so we can ignore her' and more towards 'As a woman, I can relate.. She isn't a nut at all. You ignore her, you ignore me. You wanna revise your opinions ?'

Beefing that up will help to head-off any more silliness from these 'activists'.

BCCoach · 02/10/2023 13:04

@Biffology at least Roy Liddle knows what a woman is (when he's punching one, or cheating on one).

Very hot on safeguarding too:
“I never found out [what sort of teacher I’d be] because the one thing stopping me from being a teacher was that I could not remotely conceive of not trying to shag the kids. It seemed to me to be virtually impossible not to, and I was convinced that I’d be right in there, on day one. We’re talking secondary school level here, by the way – and even then I don’t think I’d have dabbled much below year ten, as it is now called."

PaterPower · 02/10/2023 18:24

Year ten - 13 and 14 year olds. 🤢

One has to ask, with his quite detailed account of his experiences, would someone like Andy Bell be allowed to become an adult gay man these days ? He's clearly not female and neither are his views of sex - the testosterone is flowing and he's not messing about.. People get confused about gay blokes being effeminate but I don't think this is, in any way.

Lots of gay men (most?) aren't effeminate or camp.

I find it really weird the way the LGBT+ industry has focused on all this camp “fabulous” stuff as if it were the most important thing about being gay. There must be grannies somewhere who think gay means someone who likes cheesy disco music.

Biffology · 03/10/2023 10:03

@BlackForestCake

I'd say your use of the term LGBT+ industry is worth noting here, in that you have a cosy and lucrative arrangement between big business and certain organisations. As Brendan O'Neill suggests, this has consequences.

Biffology · 03/11/2023 23:31

Here's a young singer who is trying to cash in on this situation, playng the arrogant 'disappointed' card. That now-familiar sense of 'we own you'.

I think this is a woman who needs to get her facts straight - and do some growing up !

https://www.independent.ie/entertainment/music/cmat-i-can-be-very-bossy-and-i-think-im-a-little-bit-of-a-narcissist/a1903327077.html?flow=subscribe&registration=success&reg=true

Here's a quote from the article, for non-subscribers :

....

'If CMAT is brutally honest about herself, she doesn’t hold back when talking about others. Her unvarnished view of Róisín Murphy is a case in point. For those not in the know, the Co Wicklow electro-pop singer recently attracted brickbats from trans-rights advocates when pondering online if puberty blockers should be used on children.

“I don’t want to say anything that brings any ill on Róisín and I don’t like to see anyone suffering. But this is a woman who has really benefited from the queer community her whole f*king career … I think queer people are right to be angry with her. I hope she fking reads a book and steps out of the limelight. Take a f*king year out.”

She says it is possible to separate the artist and the person and cites a controversial Guardian review of Murphy’s new album, Hit Parade. “It’s a brilliant album with an ugly stain. That’s exactly what I think about it. I mean, I really loved Róisín Murphy.”

CMAT: ‘I can be very bossy and I think I’m a little bit of a narcissist’

CMAT holds her latest vinyl purchase aloft and beams. “This,” she says, “is the best.”

This is a woman who was a babe-in-arms, when Roisin was in Moloko. There's a place for tolerance of youthful arrogance but there's also a place for people like me, who have been in Roisin's audience for many years, to say 'I don't attach the same value to your opinion as I do to Roisin's opinion', to people like CMAT.
