Rod Liddle has just appeared in The Spectator, a LIDDLE late, giving a luke-warm review of the album - the gist of his opinion is that he doesn't understand why people bought the album 'in solidarity'. Is this basically him saying 'Fuck her' ? Sounds that way to me.
He thinks there's two reasons to not buy the album, the first being the cancellation attempt, which he doesn't endorse - thanks Rod, you're a mensch ! - But he does think the album isn't very good - so for him, the intelligent thing to do is turn the page of the newspaper and 'let the market decide'
That sounds suspiciously like a weaselly way of 'opting out', which makes 'so what ?' sound like an intelligent response to what's been going on. Perhaps the BBC will also follow this suburban 'it's just not to our taste' line. Talk about 'good men doing nothing'
Thing is, while Mr Liddle was probably picking his nose and probably wondering what might be a suave way of making doing nothing sound like doing something, the rest of us - the little people - Made A Statement. When that dawns on him, he might be ready to acknowledge that the market did, indeed, decide - that's kind-of what happened when the album did so well ?
He might scratch his head at people's motivations for buying into something that he didn't think was worth it - but that idea of doing something on principle might come in handy to Mr Liddle, one day, should he find himself in hot-water in the future, and be looking for support from wider society - including those who he has considered unworthy of that...
