Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 15/08/2023 17:29

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

How is this different from the campaigning against venues/libraries for things like Drag Storytime, calling for cancellation?

You think you are right. They think they are right. This shit will continue forevermore.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 14:24

Marc Burrows appears to have written an article about how Frankie Boyle was terrible but is now rehabilitated so why is that not open to Glinner? I must have missed Boyle's profuse apologies for his past comments.

Mochudubh · 16/08/2023 14:24

Thanks, I must have looked at too many free articles this month.

Have now managed to vote using my phone.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 14:25

@Hepwo ah, of course.

Are you following me?

I’ve never tried to get a drag queen story time shut down in my life

I do think parents who take their kids to them are idiots. Does that count?

Hepwo · 16/08/2023 14:36

I used the phrase cult economy.

Hepwo · 16/08/2023 14:39

To describe this.

Now it insisted: 'We work very closely with the LGBT+ community, it is a considerable part of out revenue, we believe hosting this one off show would have a negative effect on future bookings.

You think events for toddlers in libraries are exactly the same as evening comedy nights for adults?

Boycott = just don’t go to the show or stop buying the product.

Cancel Culture = call the venue and demand they cancel the show or stop stocking the product so that no one else can buy it either.

The Drag Queen story time protests aren’t feminist events, they are by Turning Point (not much overlap on the Venn diagram between Turning Point and Feminism except anti sexualisation of children).

Feminists make their own events or are invited to speak at free speech events, the Trans activists try to shut us down and shout us down (see Let Women Speak or Doc Stock at the OU or Julie Bindel at the Nottingham Library).

GC people try to arrange debates with the other side, they always chicken out (see Grace Lavery & Helen Joyce)

GC feminists don’t try and cancel trans events - we want the other side to speak out, loud and clear, because that’s how normies find out that they are batshit.

Plus, Hate speech is defeated by better speech, not silencing.

Don’t fall for the ‘Both Sides’ bullshit just because you can’t tell the difference between a boycott and a cancellation.

No?

But you have groups of people pressuring venues to cancel events because of their own belief system. What the event is doesn't matter. The point is, its a bit hypocritical to get angry at it when there are plenty of GC groups who push for event cancellations the same way there are activists now pushing for this one.

Bollox.

The vast majority just want things to be age appropriate.

Ie, no misogynistic puns before the watershed and no telling 5 year olds that boys who like Barbie might really be girls.

Drag was/is fine in an over 18s, licensed venue nightclub environment.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 16/08/2023 14:55

Anyhoo

if people don’t like others saying that they’re behaving like members of a cult then maybe they should stop behaving like members of a cult

just a thought

I am not here for a bun fight on whether people agree with drag events? That is irrelevant.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 16/08/2023 14:59

It's not irrelevant, it's a false comparison.

It's not. Its people pressuring venues because they are opposed to the content.

Of course it’s relevant - it’s the example YOU chose 😂

The only reason you think we are hypocrites is because you seemingly cannot tell the difference between ‘Adult entertainment inappropriately aimed at children’ and ‘Person who holds protected beliefs’

Drag Queens are fine at adult only events.

Last year at Edinburgh Fringe Jerry Sadowitz was cancelled for getting his cock out and Jordan Grey was lauded for getting ‘her’ cock out - now that’s hypocrisy.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/08/2023 15:04

In the vanishingly unlikely eventuality that a prominent critic of gender ideology tried to set up an event for small children that was going to expose them to totally inappropriate sights and language, none of us here would hesitate to point out the problems and ask the organisers to think again. How this in any way compares with cancelling an event for adults only because one of the performers might say something incredibly shocking and radical like 'women don't have penises' is a mystery to me. Hmm

I dont care if you dont like drag storytime or not?

There are lots of people who do.

And this is the problem.

People pressure venue to cancel because THEY dont like it, no matter how justified their reasoning it. They think they are right.

Same goes here. People pressure venue to cancel because THEY dont like it.

But Linehan did say Owen Jones should not work again until he apologised for his views.

Is that a boycott or a cancellation?

Since when is the believe that nearly all central trans figures are paedophiles a protected belief?

What is a central trans figure?

A?

But DQST is not about likes or dislikes it’s about safeguarding children from adult sexual themes (and in some cases actual paedos).

Whereas being GC is a belief protected in law.

(For the record, I have never once contacted a venue to demand they cancel an event but I have posted online stating that I believe the sexualisation of minors by exposing them to adult entertainment is wrong)

You are conflating two groups of people (Turning Point and GC People) and conflating criticism/protest with cancellation.

Trans activists are welcome to peacefully protest outside GC events, but trying to prevent those events happening at all by pressuring venues is bullshit.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 16/08/2023 15:18

I'd like to see the context for these alleged remarks of Graham's. It's very easy to extract a single sentence from a long back and forth on Twitter. Often if you see the full exchange it looks very different.
