Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

Peter Tatchell has very iffy ideas on bounda5ries and consent/

Remember when he objected to a council wanting to cut down bushes in a park because they had had complaints about men performing sexual acts in Burgess Park, London?

His argument was that this was part of gay culture and it was homophobic to stop men having open air sex with each other. Not a thought about the consent of other park users to being party to sexual acts.

I am absolutely not being an apologist for Peter Tatchell in any way but I think the after effects of the Bermondsey by election in which the coverage of his candidacy was very homophobic has made the media reluctant to criticise him. His image is that of the brave campaigner. He also has his own Foundation who can present him in a favourable light. I doubt many of his supporters have ever seen the The Guardian article or the book chapter.

You’re saying that people in the media who platform Peter Tatchell on their programmes and outlets won’t have bothered doing the minimal amount of background research of looking at Peter Tatchell’s own website, which has Peter Tatchell’s name in its URL, before inviting him onto their programmes. It didn’t cross any of their minds to ‘just google it’? Not one of them?

So his website - which contains an article about a 14 year old child, who was tied up and raped at age 12 after being groomed into child sexual exploitation by a prostituted 14 year old as a means of buying drugs, and which, rather than arguing for better protection of vulnerable children, uses that abused and exploited child as justification for a ‘sliding scale’ approach to the age of consent - has simply never been clicked on in all these years?

Not one person in the media had the professional curiosity to look him up and read the words he wrote?

Chersfrozenface · 18/08/2023 10:46

Once a person has a label, no, I don't think people in the mainstream media do look any further.

"Courageous campaigner"." Popular entertainer". Nothing else to see.

IcakethereforeIam · 18/08/2023 10:49

Wasn't he, a few years ago, being touted as 'national treasure'? Glad that seems to have died a death. He lost me when he started outing famous people he claimed were homosexual.

IcakethereforeIam · 18/08/2023 11:08

This is a bit hyperbolic perhaps, but I'm reminded of the gig the Beatles did on the roof of their record company 😀

nettie434 · 18/08/2023 11:29

@LoobiJee Some may have checked but don't feel brave enough to challenge the national treasure label (which I think is still there among some groups). I suspect the vast majority haven't bothered to look at all, in the same way that JKR is labelled transphobic. There was an interview on the Today radio programme a few months ago with Fallon Fox. They wanted someone to be interviewed alongside Sharron Davies about trans women in women's sport. Fallon Fox is of course one of the most unsuitable people to talk about the topic but nobody had bothered to do a simple background check.

MavisMcMinty · 18/08/2023 11:41

Did Glinner do any trans material at all, I wonder? It would be so hilarious if he didn’t, after all the fuss.

IcakethereforeIam · 18/08/2023 11:44

I think @Glinner is a national treasure. 😁

I don't think the dog found his jokes funny. Poor thing, being dragged along to that.

How bizarre Donna. You took your dog to a comedy gig and expected your dog to be happy about it?

Or did you not go and this is your attempt to make yet another snide remark?

If you are attempting to portray trans activists as reasonable and knowledgable people, you are failing dismally. You are actually just portraying them to be ageist, lack any concept of safeguarding and frankly hateful towards any person who disagrees with you.

Dunno if you know this, but dogs aren’t human and can’t understand stand up routines.

I suppose kicking around with Furries could confuse a simpleton re: animal behaviour though.

Somanyquestionstoaskaboutthis · 18/08/2023 12:10

Donna love, if that’s your best argument against Glinner it’s time to give up. Go and eat some Tunnocks teacakes and relax.

The BBC item on Glinner is now on the main page of the News site.

Donna, that's your dog proof reading the drivel you post here. I'd look pretty miserable as well if I had to do that.

Do we know who the second venue was that also cancelled? They could do with some long overdue sunlight as well.

IcakethereforeIam · 18/08/2023 12:17

Perhaps, in a furry costume 😳, that was.....no it's too farfetched. Although...

They were apologetic and supportive of Comedy Unleashed but worried about their staff, I believe.

If CU believes them to be genuine then I’m willing to trust CU on this.

Hopefully by next August a lot of the transactivist power will be dust and the unnamed venue will no longer be afraid.

NicCageisnotNickCave · 18/08/2023 12:21

*worried about the safety of their staff, not worried about the staff acting like little dicks themselves.

ApocalipstickNow · 18/08/2023 12:25

A dog didn’t find it funny is up there with quoting Mr Blobby as a legitimate source of, well, anything.
