Comedy event cancelled at the Fringe because of Glinner?

I hadn't seen anything about this on X/Twitter previously, but apparently some activists have been putting pressure on the venue and they've cancelled an upcoming event called Comedy Unleashed because one of the comedians is Graham Linehan. How utterly pathetic. https://twitter.com/UnleashedComedy/status/1691476377793409024?s=20 Seems to be organised by/associated with Andrew Doyle, aka Titania McGrath.

Aw!😍

Boiledbeetle · 17/08/2023 19:38

Finally caught up.

On the I.T. /it discussion

I pronounce it as the it crowd.

BUT

And sorry Graham, I'm not a fan. Of that series or of Father Ted. If I had been a fan I'd have called it the I.T. crowd.

Would that awful programme where three people (Rosanna Lockwood the presenter, Peter Tatchell and some total nonentity) ganged up against Glinner be governed by the Ofcom code of impartiality?

https://www.ofcom.org.uk/tv-radio-and-on-demand/broadcast-codes/broadcast-code/section-five-due-impartiality-accuracy

It was particularly horrific as Tatchell is known for expressing paedophile sympathies, and Lockwood was apparently briefed beforehand by an extremist trans activist, Freda Wallace.

Section five: Due impartiality and due accuracy

This section of the Broadcasting Code relates to the concept of

I love plan c - hope Andrew Doyle has learned from Kellie Jay’s extensive experience and arranged some
security (and perhaps that Auditor fella with the GoPro).

I guess you could if you wanted to miss the whole joke. But I doubt if anyone who knows enough about Graham Linehan's work as to pronounce him a 'genius' would.

Yes but what does IT stand for?

I think it's ridiculous to claim that Owen Jones is 'as' influential as Challoner was.

But in any event, if they are 'as central' as Challoner, then the fact remains - GL is saying that 'nearly all' of them are nonces.

No he isn’t. You are deciding who is ‘central’ on his behalf.

The secret venue revealed- the street.

NicCageisnotNickCave · 17/08/2023 21:39

Yep!

Looks cracking’ tbf.

Well played to Andrew Doyle & chums.

Cheers 🍻

The real comedy all along was Glinner trying to find a venue, not the actual show himself.

Well played and thanks for the laugh.

What shite are you chatting? It worked out brilliantly for Comedy Unleashed.

Most Edinburgh Fringe shows play to an audience of you can count on your fingers.

Waitwhat23 · 17/08/2023 21:44

...have you ever been to anything in the Fringe?

I went to a venue years ago to see a pre famous The Mighty Boosh and they led the entire audience through the surrounding streets as part of their act.

There's stages set up all down the Royal Mile for open air events.

From its inception, one of the Fringe's main USP's (marking it out separately from the International Festival) was using unusual venues, including the street.

You salty, pal?

ArabeIIaScott · 17/08/2023 21:47

We just won't fucking wheesht, you know.

Well done, all.

DerekFaker · 17/08/2023 21:48

You couldn't buy this amount of publicity!

Although the latest TRA conspiracy is that this was all a set-up by Comedy Unleashed 🙄

I'm sure whatever show the Fringe had on tonight was more exciting than this.

Graham Linehan giving a hateful diatribe about transpeople to a bunch of old people.

The show? THE show? You think the Fringe had one show, singular, on tonight?

Something tells me you ain’t in Edinburgh, mate.

The joke really is on you, thinking this is any kind of win for your side. Check the torrent of opinions against Graham's venue cancelling and see in black and white how your lot have absolutely failed.

The venue debacle is phyrric for trans, to add to the total rejection of Lia Thomas and Austin Killips, the Adam Bryson, Sarah Jane Baker and Mika Minio debacles, and now this.

Enjoy the previous victories you had, they're all done now.

That's made me think of the surprised reaction of recent visitors when I showed them this year's phonebook sized Fringe programme. They were even more surprised when I told them that there are currently 7 festivals (including the Fringe) running in Edinburgh.

IcakethereforeIam · 17/08/2023 22:15

I think it's sad what the Leith Arches are claiming now. If they are to be believed, they were forced to cancel Andrew Doyles booking not because of a pile on from random Internet wankers but because they were strong armed by regular customers. People they had built a relationship with, who they might have considered friends. Well, now they know, it's just transactional. And nothing is acceptable except complete and utter compliance.
