Oh look, another received opinion

I totally appreciate DM's skill at stirring outrage about relatively low impact topics (in the scheme of things) as a distraction from much more fundamental societal issues.

What are these 'low impact topics' and what are they distracting from? because I regard the threats to women's spaces, the castration of children and the definition of biological sex to be fundamental societal issues. Women's freedoms and rights seem to be regressing at an alarming rate but you reckon that's a 'distraction'?

PrincessPalatine · 14/06/2023 10:37

Shall we appreciate the Völkische Beobachter and the Stürmer next? The naivety of some MNers never fails to astound me.

Nor me, the way in which a story covered by many news outlets only gets pilloried if it's in the DM, the naivity of many is staggering! How do the little dears cope with a story in both the DM and the Grauniad?

Remember who had the guts to name the Lawrence killers and put their mugs on the front page. I'll give the youngsters a clue, it wasn't the Grauniad!

That. No matter what my views might be on a single issue. The Mail is a complete tag of a newspaper. Agreeing with me in any one issue does not make it even close to a decent newspaper. It backs some disgusting views and I find it pathetic that people are prepared to forget that.

Agree.

beAsensible1 · 14/06/2023 12:47

Read the daily mail if you want, even praise it if you want.
but agreeing with their stance on Trans people does not suddenly make it a feminist newspaper.

To quote a previous poster, has anyone said that?

I think they’ve said it focuses on women which is certainly true (for better and for worse)

55balloons · 14/06/2023 10:39

@PrincessPalatine sorry this is an apprection thread for the Daily Mail only.. You are free to start other appreciation threads.

@55balloons I got it (even if it whoooshed over@PrincessPalatine 's head).

V good.

Right, sorry to interrupt. As you were.....

ArabeIIaScott · 14/06/2023 12:48

The reaches here are quite astonishing.

It's a newspaper - we don't have to pledge allegiance to it, ffs.

WhiteFire · 14/06/2023 12:49

RudsyFarmer · 14/06/2023 12:35

It’s always the same assertion that being grateful for truth telling within a majority captured media is a far right opinion.

I hate to tell you (I’ll whisper it) that lots and lots and lot and lots of people with middle of the road political persuasions agree with these tabloids. They agree with their take on calling out those who cheat the system, migration, trans issues - all those hot button issues. They just don’t verbalise it. They take it to the polling stations which is why the Tories have been in power for 12/13 years.

And why we had Brexit.

The sneering from the left is just pushing voters away especially those who consider themselves centre with left leanings, who will just slightly move to lean the other way.

Imnotahoarderreally · 14/06/2023 12:50

It’s not what news media you read, it’s how curious you are and if you look for different angles on the subject. Accept there will be bias.

So many people think they’re intellectually superior in some way if they pour scorn on DM readers. Says more about them really.

JudgeJ · 14/06/2023 12:51

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 14/06/2023 11:34

I love the periodic interjections from the

i’ll never read the mail!! Crew

such deep thinkers

really backing up their views

I love how it's almost compulsory on MN to slate the DM yet all those who slate seem to know chapter and verse of what's in it!
Years ago during interviews for Sandhurst candidates were asked what newspapers they read and of course it was Times, Telegraph and a few brave souls said Guardian. In the Mess though it was the Sun, Mail, Express that were most read and the other 3 hardly touched.

It’s not a deeply thought through position is it?

as I think the majority of ‘it’s a rag’ type posts on this thread demonstrate

Exactly @MrsDanversGlidesAgain .

@Stoic123 is correct in what she posted in regard to the DMs skill. They are extremely skilled at rousing emotions & they have the correct level of sensationalism.
However this is exactly what's needed to really hit home that children are being mutilated & castrated with transgender surgeries.
And women's spades are being invaded by men.
Elon Musk is also heavily on the case but certain mumsnetters weren't happy with that either... He is exactly the right person to advocate as he's one of the most powerful & influential people on the planet & he's restored proper speech to twitter.

The DM are perfect to advocate for children's safeguarding & women's rights as they have a huge global following online & on social media as well as huge newspaper distributions

I dunno, maybe because the DM, which is known for its hateful views, has ONE agenda that suits yours, doesn't mean it needs to be applauded. Its still a terrible fucking website and paper.

Once again the feminism board becomes a bullying, snidey embarrassment.

This! Well said.

Is the Daily Mail massively sexist in the way it writes about female celebrities?

Yup

does it come from a nationalist position?
yep

is it open about it’s position?
clearly

does it cover important social issues other outlets won’t touch due to their political agenda like the Cologne Riots, women being fired for holding gender critical views etc?
yes

none of those strikes me as a reason not to read it and not to appreciate it’s bloody minded pursuit of whatever the hell it feels like covering

"Is the Daily Mail massively sexist in the way it writes about female celebrities?
Yup"

And that doesn't strike you as a reason not to read it?

And let's not fall into the trap of believing that rags like the DM are courageous for talking about issues like this. It's not brave to pander to the enormous contingent of right wing, middle-England, middle class readership of the DM, dog-whistling to get them enraged and clicking on articles and buying papers. It's hardly a trailblazing bastion of speaking truth to power, is it. It's a massively financially successful business operation, nothing more.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 14/06/2023 12:54

I stopped reading the DM years ago when someone reporting on Stephen Gately's death pondered what was going on when he, his boyfriend and another friend went back to their home after being out on the town. It was some nasty, homophobic insinuations.

I am, however, quite a bit older now. So I avoid the Femail bits of trash, and read articles that interest me with a critical eye. I'm able to do this with multiple different media publications, but OP is right, the DM is thus far the only mainstream media that is seemingly willing to post what are considered 'controversial' articles.

Florissante · 14/06/2023 12:55

The seagull posters have arrived: they fly in, squawk loudly, crap all over the thread and generally make a nuisance of themselves.

commonground · 14/06/2023 12:55

Although for as long as the DM continue to describe women doing normal things, (eg, wearing a skirt = 'flaunting her shapely pins',) it's a no from me, sorry.

Then this is not the thread for you.

Tigofigo · 14/06/2023 12:56

The Daily Mail doesn't give a shit about these issues.

They just want clicks and to appeal to their base.

If it was politically and financially more advantageous to have another view, they would, in a minute.

MrsDanversGlidesAgain · 14/06/2023 12:56

And in the articles I've read they really do their research, as well, because they know that any inaccuracies will be jumped on.

BodgerLovesMashedPotato · 14/06/2023 12:56

Most of these publications make it their sole aim to create anger, hatred and fear, rather that empowering us with information
Think there's something in that.
Not so much about news telling anymore, and more opinion pieces or biases to try and influence opinions and create division.

@PriOn1 😂😂😂 I think this has to be a mumsnet classic "waking over the Daily Mail".. It stirs up feelings & emotions that's for sure.
