(note to self, use fruitcake more often in conversation. I like it)

Nutty as a fruitcake was a fave of my mother for any views she disagreed with (pretty much all of them).

My mum reads the Daily Mail (for the TV guide mainly) and is not a nasty right-wing fruitcake. She's a quite ordinary apolitical retired woman of working class origins who likes cats, ballet and historical romances. This country is full of people like her, largely filling their days with unpaid care (grandchildren and elderly parents).

Is there an approved publication which has reported on the school's unprofessional behaviour?

Plunkplink · 14/06/2023 10:59

I’m from the north and I like my fruitcake with cheese

ResisterRex · 14/06/2023 10:59

Sanchez Manning has been one of the dogged, unsung journalists on this topic. From Dec 2018:

Nevermind using it in conversation we should eat more fruitcake too.

I despise a lot of what the daily mail prints but I can't fault them over this subject and they do reach a lot of people

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 14/06/2023 11:01

Yup

my MIL reads the Mail and watches GB news

i expect PPs think she’s a right wing fruitcake

in fact she’s a retired practice nurse whose patients adored her and who enhances the lives of her friends and family with her selfless caring nature

turns out people are complicated innit?

HappydaysArehere · 14/06/2023 11:02

You are not getting anything from me that praises that rag.

IcakethereforeIam · 14/06/2023 11:03

Perhaps that's why we need a DM thread, keep it all in one space to stop it polluting the wider MN. You can name change to post on it! Save yourselves, it's too late for me!

I'm fed up of GC feminist purity spirals. I have a line, I won't buy it, I'll read articles that are highlighted and if I come across a link to an article that seems interesting I'll follow it. I haven't read any DM pieces on the Nottingham killings, other papers are covering that. But this, this....I don't see the Guardian or the BBC doing much on it or doing it honestly.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 14/06/2023 11:03

YY to Sanchez Manning

she’s really led the way in terms of getting ANY kind of ‘erm, is this really ok?’ Type message out

My mum (& late dad) always buy the Daily Mail & the Mail on Sunday. I do the same, I enjoy & share their online articles. They publish what I want to read & always have. I'll make no apologies. T
They are all over this topic & rightly so.

Many years ago I was told it aims to be a paper for women and it certainly living up to that .

Please tell me you're on the wind up?! 😂
Daily Mail, the paper for women.
I've heard it all now.

BernardBlacksMolluscs · 14/06/2023 11:05

I’m going to end up making a fruitcake this evening aren’t I?

dammit. I’m supposed to be being careful so I shed a few post holiday pounds

They do not seem prepared to tolerate and excuse violence against women and children in the way that say, the guardian does

so in that respect, yes, they are a paper for women

55balloons · 14/06/2023 11:07

@BodgerLovesMashedPotato name any other media outlet as invested in this as the Daily Mail. They are completely committed.
Gript in Ireland is another one I follow on Facebook which is also really on this.

Shall we appreciate the Völkische Beobachter and the Stürmer next? The naivety of some MNers never fails to astound me.

I think you need Pink News and the Guardian these days, if that's your taste in reading.

Manichean · 14/06/2023 11:07

Lie down with dogs, get up with fleas. The Daily Mail is proudly mysoginistic and right wing, be careful where you are heading.

Late DGM had a FABULOUS fruitcake recipe which she gave to DM. No idea what happened to that. It was moist* and full of fruit.

*Sorry, moist haters.

3peassuit · 14/06/2023 11:09

I used to read the guardian for, amongst other things, its feminist stance. Now the guardian seems to have become an unhinged misogynist rag and I get more feminism from the Mail. Strange days.

55balloons · 14/06/2023 11:09

Now we have an appreciation thread going for the DM, I'll look forward to see what they publish next!

Some of us are quite capable of reading our sources critically and judging the value of what they're saying and how they're saying it. But thanks for the concern.

PS. One Y in misogynist

BodgerLovesMashedPotato · 14/06/2023 11:11

Pressed too soon
Meant to say
This- very mysoginistic. Paper for women , as if. Cuckoo land

corlan · 14/06/2023 11:11

I've appreciated the Daily Mail ever since they named the murderers of Stephen Lawrence and campaigned for them to be brought to trial.
It's a campaigning newspaper. I don't agree with most of the positions it takes . However, on the issue of the effects of trans activism on women and children, it's been outstanding.

Posted too soon - one Y in misogynist and not where you have it.

Not sure I care for being called a dog, even by implication.
