Women's rights general conversations - Thread 5

Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

I followed that work DEI response thread for a bit when it started - thanks for the alert to the update. It is a depressing example of both Stonewalling and stonewalling.

This might be.....entertaining. A tweet thread of genderwoo nonsense in recognition of IDAHOBIT (possibly my favourite initialism after NWOBHM).

The OP deserves a medal for persisting.

Just read the thread. Indeed she does, well done that woman! The cynical double-talk of it all!

The Annex B thread has been moved from FWR to Chat. Not Feminism Chat, actual Chat.

Anyone care to open a book on how long it stays there?

The times, they are a-changin'.

Maybe.

I’m just putting this here because I want to brag about it somewhere and don’t want to break my 18 month social media abstinence streak and I’m hoping you won’t mind too much…

My eldest is 22 and officially lives in a house share a couple of miles away - he still has a room here and occasionally lets himself in at night and spends the next morning hanging out with me - as happened today.

His (arts based) aspirational career path is absolutely saturated with trans ideology and intersectionalism but most of his friends are from a decade long hobby and are a mix of uni grads and recently qualified tradies, so he’s not completely immersed in group think.

I’ve done my best to teach all my kids critical thinking and resisting cancel culture but growing up in a world influenced by algorithms must be really difficult and it’s hard to measure my success or failure.

Anyway, earlier today there was a knock at the door. I made him answer, assuming it was a delivery. It wasn’t, it was a couple of Jehovah’s Witnesses.

I have a standard ‘Thanks but no thanks and-quickly-shut-door’ policy for all cold callers, but eldest loves to debate and when I realised what was happening, I decided to let him make the most of the free-of-fear-of-cancellation context and (politely!) exercise his brain.

Dear Reader, I didn’t listen to the whole thing (he was on the doorstep for at least 15 minutes) but a couple of snippets I did hear were,

‘But free will is already curtailed by material reality… If it wasn’t, men could become women and I would be able to fly’

and

‘The only entity I need to thank for my existence is my mother’

😆

Fully deserved brag, @NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom !

duc748 · 23/05/2023 15:34

Top parenting in action there! 😎

IcakethereforeIam · 23/05/2023 15:37

Omg! That last sentence! You need it on a a t-shirt or a tattoo or in sky writing. 😁

StephanieSuperpowers · 23/05/2023 15:39

Super young man.

Anyone watching C4 News right now? I didn't catch the beginning of this piece about the EHRC. Caroline Nokes spoke well.

IcakethereforeIam · 23/05/2023 19:37

There's a live chat with Hadley Freeman. I'd ask her a question but I'm shy Blush

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 23/05/2023 20:39

That's well worth a brag, @NicolaSturgeonsSOGIbottom

MouseMinge · 24/05/2023 01:56

For anyone who has (access to) Netflix a new documentary, Victim/Suspect is well worth watching. It's about rape and sexual assault victims around the US not just being ignored by the criminal justice system but also arrested and charged with false reporting. It's shocking but incredibly well done.

StephanieSuperpowers · 24/05/2023 08:58

It really does feel like all the progress women made has been rolled back very quickly. I personally blame the dick pandering tendency for that, encouraging men to limit and control conversations around sexual violence to be fair and avoid the obvious - it is men, it's not women, we deserve to be safe and we don't actually need to apologise or hold men's hands through this difficult time for them.

duc748 · 25/05/2023 12:43

My increasing hard line not to vote Labour was reinforced yesterday though, by Starmer's disgusting dog-whistle stuff on immigration. Once again, it's the sheer fucking dishonesty of it all that gets me.

MavisMcMinty · 25/05/2023 12:48

My ex is a Labour party employee, and in 2015 I asked him why on earth Miliband’s Labour was echoing the Tories on immigration - “It’s the number one issue on the doorstep” was his response. It’s the number one issue on the doorstep because of Tory (UKIP, RW media etc.) rhetoric, FFS! Trying to follow and pander to wrong-headedness, rather than trying to change minds is a coward’s trick.

New wave of British Heavy Metal

Thanks - and the other one?

... I have read the intervening posts, not just here for the sillies.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 25/05/2023 12:56

IDAHOBIT is, sadly, not a small furry-footed creature. I think it's International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia.
