Women's rights general conversations - Thread 5

Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

I see a difference between 'woke' and "woke". The first is okay, even desirable, the second I see as something that is actually illiberal but glomming onto a truly 'woke' cause.

MouseMinge · 01/07/2023 18:52

Thanks, @Boiledbeetle . I'm tired and my brain isn't working.

@Kucinghitam I disagreed too but it was too pointless a thread for me to care enough to respond. Also, I really don't give a shit about Disney films and especially not the whole MCU. The thread criticising it is a pointless piece of nasty nonsense.

Waitwhat23 · 01/07/2023 18:55

Kucinghitam · 01/07/2023 18:21

I glanced at the Disney woke thread when it was a short little seedling, in a broad vague sense I disagreed with the OP (amazing, considering that FWR is a hive mind of a mere six troublesome old bigots or somesuch), didn't feel bothered to comment because (newsflash) I just disagreed in the aforementioned broad vague sense.

Same. I also saw more and more posters with names I've never seen before join the conversation and got a similar sense of foreboding I get when I see the pronouns threads come up.

Boiledbeetle · 01/07/2023 19:24

The Disney thread is an odd one. 227 posts 92 different posters and very few names I recognised as regular posters.

I also avoided it like I tend to avoid Sam Smith threads. I'll read them but rarely feel the urge to comment. It's because I assume they'll get deleted. I expected the Disney one to go but it's still there.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 01/07/2023 20:00

It did seem an odd thread, ignoring the fact that the streaming model invented by Netflix isn't scaling up in ways profitable for multiple services. Wokeness irrelevant.

MouseMinge · 01/07/2023 20:45

Yep, re streaming. There are too many services which means that each slice of the pie is getting smaller. There are things I'd like to watch on Apple occasionally or Disney (very, very occasionally) and bits on Sky but I can't afford to have all of the streaming services and I'm sure the majority of people can't so you have to decide which ones to have and which ones to do without. I have Amazon Prime because blah and Netflix because, on the whole, it has the most things I want to watch. Sky is way too expensive, I could get NOW but it's the same as Apple and Disney, can't afford to add any more than I already have.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/07/2023 21:01

I thought the thread on site stuff was odd in that it seemed to instantly attract a high number of posters whose names I didn’t recognise with a very similar narrative. I didn’t do a name search but it did seem very … convenient. And it also didn’t go as the OP planned in the end.

Boiledbeetle · 01/07/2023 21:06

@YetAnotherSpartacus I'm currently sitting on my hands. A poster has misrepresented why a post of hers was deleted on the FWR board. As one of the people who reported her post I'm so tempted to give the true version of the story but I'm going to resist!

IcakethereforeIam · 01/07/2023 21:11

Is that the one who claimed it was deleted because they used 'cis'?

That site stuff thread is very I saw Goody Proctor do a racism. And if they’ve all got FWR muted, how do they know what’s on here? I found the Disney thread facile and off topic (more of a Matt Walsh YouTube clip style talking point) so didn’t contribute, but most threads I see on here are just what it says on the tin - discussions about sex and gender, and the culture and issues around it.

MavisMcMinty · 01/07/2023 22:19

They’ve all finished their shift now by the look of it.

Boiledbeetle · 02/07/2023 00:12

To those of you who don't do Twitter this is what you missed today

Froodwithatowel · 02/07/2023 10:31

Next shift has arrived. The general approach seems to be to make repeated, wild accusations that something is happening all the time (without evidence) which mean everyone is rightwing extremist (including Stonewall apparently) and any evidence produced that contradicts this is either ignored or flat out denied while looking right at it.

People change sex
Children can consent to having their fertility and sexual capacity permanently eliminated
war is peace
freedom is slavery
FWR is knee deep in racism and homophobia
and the world is overrun by small toasters

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/07/2023 10:33

any evidence produced that contradicts this is either ignored or flat out denied while looking right at it.

Isn't it something about how they cannot produce the evidence because it's been deleted already?

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 10:41

I like the way they talk about Section 28, as though it’s in the deep dark mists of time. I was 15 when Thatcher’s Tories came to power, 24 when Section 28 was passed into law, and 40 when it was finally repealed (in England). It was part of my youth, everyone I knew was against it, it was a horrible Conservative law that we had to wait over 16 years for Labour to undo.

”Tell me you’re young without telling me you’re young.”

”You would have agreed with section 28!”

IcakethereforeIam · 02/07/2023 11:08

I wasn't going to bother looking again, but now I'm intrigued. Toasters!?

Froodwithatowel · 02/07/2023 12:21

Oh definitely toasters. Running around all over the place the little element heating bastards.

<the done thing being to just make up random mad shit I'm just joining in>

Well I did enjoy the bit the other day that went:

everyone saying that lesbians are sexual racists are far right manipulator boogey men and it's so sad that you've been fooled

hang on, that would make Stonewall far right manipulators?

prove it!

(video provided)

<total ignoring of this and of unwanted conversation, resumption of re statement of original far right boogey men coming to get you.>

Does anyone else remember the apple screensaver with (I think it was) fish and the occasional flying toaster? I think it was late 80s/early 90s.

Boiledbeetle · 02/07/2023 13:33

I succumbed I couldn't let the CIS deletion posters misrepresentation stand

No, but the Microsoft pipes screensaver would occasionally draw, I think from memory, a teapot instead of a pipe and then just continue drawing pipes as if the teapot never happened.

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 13:37

I enjoyed your succumbing @Boiledbeetle .

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 13:42

I had Desert Island Someone (I want to say Dick but maybe it was Joe?) as my screensaver in around 2000, but the IT people at work didn’t like it/trust it so banned it. It was great though, days of sameness then something would happen to Dick-or-Joe, like a coconut falling off the tree or a ship sailing past far away on the horizon.

MouseMinge · 02/07/2023 13:43

The section 28 thing would be hilarious if it wasn't so obscene. Gender identity ideology is akin to section 28 but instead trying to erase homosexuality by making it illegal to talk about it in a positive way they're erasing it by conversion therapy. Erase the gays by turning them into the opposite sex. Which, again, would be hilarious if it wasn't so obscene.
