Women's rights general conversations - Thread 5

Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

No, but the Microsoft pipes screensaver would occasionally draw, I think from memory, a teapot instead of a pipe and then just continue drawing pipes as if the teapot never happened.

I remember both of those. I got a bit of a surprise one day when my Mac suddenly started making underwater bubbling noises - I'd never had the sound turned up before, and someone else had been fiddling with it.

Froodwithatowel · 02/07/2023 13:56

Obscene is right. Lots of loud talk about how LOVED and WONDERFUL homosexuality is because it means mixed sex, and definitely nothing else, and there's no one who exists who doesn't agree. Professor Umbridge on crack, with kittens. Hem hem. But I see Tatchell has today announced that bisexuality is the future (and no one nastily having a sexual orientation that involves male people having to cope with the word 'no'). So it's heading into plain sight.

I enjoyed your succumbing @Boiledbeetle .

I swear some of them don't know the advanced search exists when they throw out these statements as absolute fact.

I had Desert Island Someone (I want to say Dick but maybe it was Joe?) as my screensaver in around 2000, but the IT people at work didn’t like it/trust it so banned it. It was great though, days of sameness then something would happen to Dick-or-Joe, like a coconut falling off the tree or a ship sailing past far away on the horizon.

word everyone GIF

I'd forgotten all about that one! Ah the old computer days.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 02/07/2023 14:28

I'm backing off because I think that certain posters are rather enjoying being nasty little bullies.

Boiledbeetle · 02/07/2023 14:51

Yeah a certain someone is looking for a fight aren't they.

I've said my piece unless another is posted that is directly connected to me I'm back to eating popcorn.

I learned yesterday, that Hebrew died out as a spoken language! And was revived relatively recently. As a result there are some words that are untranslatable. No-one knows what they meant, the 'gopher' wood the ark was built from? 'Gopher' is a literal translation of the letters used but was it a type of tree, a place, the local timber merchant, something else?

I had no idea that Hebrew had died out - I thought it was the language of Israel.

Similarly to gopher wood, nobody knows which flowers the Ancient Greeks called hyacinths - the Flowers of Adonis; it's assumed that they aren't what we call hyacinths.

I double checked because I'd just learned it from YouTube. Apparently it was a thing that happened! Jewish people seemed to adopt the local languages and the languages used in trade (Greek, Aramaic, etc.). There were unsuccessful rebellions which also meant suppression and probably the loss of entire populations. Ultimately, Hebrew survived as the language used in Jewish law and religion, perhaps like Latin was also dead except as the language of Christan law and religion. When a Jewish state was becoming a thing there were factions that argued that Yiddish or even German(!) should be the official language. I'm full of admiration that a language that was essentially a relict was resurrected so successfully. Says a lot about survival and tenacity.

Obviously, there's so much more to this. I suspect parts of the story are very dark.

Maybe it's students on their holidays with nothing better to do than try to annoy people. Didn't that happen last summer holidays?

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 15:04

Castaway Johnny. Not Desert Island Dick. Not sure I ever saw some of these scenes, but it was my work screensaver and I did have work to do, couldn’t spend all day waiting for something to happen, like him catch a fish and cook it.

Johnny Castaway: The story!

Most people don't know the story of the screensaver Johnny Castaway, a story which takes place over the timespan of 11 days. The story scenes are rarely and ...

Well, I've just been and read the thread 😠 Attagirl @Boiledbeetle and all the other posters. I agree about the fights one. I find one name really misogynistic, I'm surprised how much, just the name, upset me.

Britinme · 02/07/2023 16:02

Desert Island Dick could be a radio programme in which those attracted to male people fantasized about who they'd like to be trapped on a desert island with. I nominate Harrison Ford, partly because he's always been my celeb crush and partly because he's a carpenter and could build us a house.

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 16:09

I’d like Stephen King of course, to tell me stories all day and all night, and take my mind off the hunger pains. But he has the look of a man who burns rather than tans, and (unlike Annie Wilkes) I don’t want him injured.

Tricyrtis2022 · 02/07/2023 16:14

Thinking about it, I can't think of anyone I'd want to be on a desert island with other than Mr T. He's practical, strong, he can cook and talk for England and he's nice to snuggle up with.

Gonners · 02/07/2023 18:43

MrT sounds lovely. Can you get him cloned?

Am I the only one that assumed the Mr T @Tricyrtis2022 mentioned was the A Team Mr T! I was wondering how she knew he was nice to snuggle!

Britinme · 02/07/2023 19:39

Me too @Boiledbeetle :-)

MavisMcMinty · 02/07/2023 19:40

Oh definitely toasters. Running around all over the place the little element heating bastards.

<the done thing being to just make up random mad shit I'm just joining in>

...and I'm now thinking of the intelligent toaster conversation on Red Dwarf.

Boiledbeetle · 02/07/2023 19:59

I loved the red dwarf toaster!

Gosh, I went back to have a look at that thread. There are some toxic posters there, not mentioning any names, Karenmanager.

IcakethereforeIam · 02/07/2023 20:56

My username is an inadvertent tribute to that toaster😎. I didn't realise until I was rewatching it with my youngest.

Waitwhat23 · 02/07/2023 21:10

Just went and dug out my copy of Better Than Life just to re-read the toaster bits!
