Women's rights general conversations - Thread 5

Continuation of Thread 4.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

...“if cis men got pregnant”

The old joke used to be, there'd be pop-up abortion clinics on every street corner.

bignosebignose · 09/06/2023 12:00

I liked this:

This kind of writing always got to me when I was an insecure graduate student. Whenever I encountered an argument that seemed a bit dodgy, I’d trust authority and assume there had to be something I’d missed. I’ve a sneaking suspicion that Judith Butler’s entire career is based on people doing this. That mixture of the bleeding obvious with the ravingly incoherent can lead you to be so relieved, so eternally grateful when you get to the bleeding obvious bits that you’re not only forgiving of the incoherent bits, but convinced that everyone else gets them except you.

Do you think this would be suitable for a SFW event? Or is it a bit fighty?

😁

Boiledbeetle · 09/06/2023 12:26

I've just had an engineer here for over an hour.

5 minutes it took him to do the work the rest of the time we were discussing the abhorrent treatment of JKR Dylan Mulvaney, men in women's spaces, pronouns, how his college aged son is so sick of this shit. etc.

it was glorious.

He'd made a joke about me on my laptop "what you doing on there writing a book?" as I typed away at a poem for volume 2. Told him I was writing about men going into women's spaces and he was off. I couldn't stop him (he brought up all the of the above I was just sat there wity my mouth open mainly). He had particular issue with 6 foot men with beards going into the women's toilets.

It seems your average Joe Bloggs is as sick of all this as we are.

HOORAY!

I've ordered the Book of Mighty Poems, AKA Under the Duvet of Darkness. Looking forward to reading next week. Top scathing wit here from glosswitch:

Wonderful news!! Now you see if you'd been the engineer who was just at mine you'd have gone home with a free copy ( and yes I did actually send him home with a copy of the book. As he's going out the door he was "I don't remember where I got this from or from who, I think I may have picked it up in a charity shop". Good man!)

I think it's a cotton mix with a transfer.

Oh well yeah that makes ALL the difference. it should have been 100% cotton. It's no good you are committing literal hurty feels all over the place if you wear that. And properly static build up as well.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 09/06/2023 12:51

Whenever MacKinnon doesn’t seem to be making any sense, they can tell themselves the argument must have gone over their heads. After all, it’s not as though Catharine Mackinnon wouldn’t make sense. Who the hell are you to go up against her?

This is where a certain amount of intellectual arrogance can be useful. I'm not (quite) arrogant enough to think that nobody is cleverer than I am, but I'm confident that the number of people cleverer than I'm able to understand is vanishingly small. So when encounting a Butlerian argument that appears to make no sense my starting position is that am capable of going up against them.

Doesn't make me popular, but it's a good defence against being bamboozled.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 09/06/2023 12:55

That's marvellous, Beetle!

Yes, both Joe and Josephine are, I reckon. Said as much before

MouseMinge · 09/06/2023 14:50

Same, @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn . I'm not the cleverest of all time but if brain size increased with intellect I would be The Mekon.

At this point yes. But it was nice to have a guy stood in my living room saying "I am not a cis man I am not a subset of my sex I am just a man"

duc748 · 09/06/2023 17:08

Sure, get that.

It honestly just makes a change having a man in my living room, regardless of his views! 🙂

Tricyrtis2022 · 09/06/2023 17:13

@Boiledbeetle how refreshing to have that conversation, you must have both enjoyed it very much.

yeah, it was most unexpected. I don't actually have lengthy conversations with many men these days so it was interesting to see how much he knew was going on. He's obviously not just superficially looked at the subject. He knew enough to be in the raging this is so wrong category. Isla Bryson came up, bud, the nike sports bra. he started with JKR and went from there He's currently trying to work his wife round from the be kind place she is in.

It cheered me up no end.

Tricyrtis2022 · 09/06/2023 17:35

I hope he does manage to convince his wife of the wrongness. The main person I talk to about GC stuff is my OH and he's been furious about what's going since he first found out. I'm so glad we're in agreement

Of all the things Elon Musk could choose to tweet about he chose this

Is that the Mermaid family?

Yep! 😁 I'm liking him owning Twitter

Hmm. I have literally no memory of being a gas boiler engineer and being round your house today...

I did have a fleeting thought of what if it was you!

SinnerBoy · 10/06/2023 07:21

Ha ha!

No, my wife was TWAW. I told her most of them stay intact and she's a bit less onboard now.

StephanieSuperpowers · 10/06/2023 12:51

Re the puberty blockers, I'm thrilled and delighted to see so many people who've disvovered that they basically always agreed that they weren't a good idea, it's really that people who always were against them didn't wait for the evidence first so we continue to be bigoted monsters.

I expect they're pretty confident that the rest of this nonsense won't reach a similarly ignominious end.

Twitter is gas.
