It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

TBF I always thought they had decided to call themselves after their pet dog. I googled it tonight & discovered it was used in Harry Potter.

Apparently the lady was told she could not pay with cash. The staff - two of them - were both rude to her, one emptied her whole handbag out in front of her (this is not on the recording her husband made that is on twitter but is on the Starbucks internal CCTV (presumably why the staff member has rightly lost their job), and various other things said to her, clapped into her face and was dreadfully rude just because she thought the man was a man or something along those lines.

The biggest bit of the story is really that in 2023 women at very long last seem to be able to speak about this on MN and elsewhere, express our views in a way I doubt was so at Peak Trans period.

Yes @Rightsraptor you've got it! Right down to the glorious detail of the misnamed customer being called Vanessa. Such hypocrisy when misgendering isn’t allowed.

I saw a list of all the viral ‘Karens’ recently which makes the point that none of them are called Karen. Central Park Karen is called Amy etc.

If Vanessa’s ‘crime’ against this employee went viral she’d be StarbucksKaren = transphobic

Presumably Person Behind the Till had already asked Vanessa from Cowes her name for the sticker on the cup before VTPHP even got involved. VTPHP had no excuse to call Vanessa from Cowes Karen.

I haven't darkened Starbucks' door for many years (initially because the coffee was crap, then they got involved in all the trans stuff) but is there any particular reason why that branch seems have a disproportionate (compared to the general population) number of umbrella folk? If it was Brighton I could understand it. But Southampton ferry terminal?

There are 2 universities and a college on the doorstep. We're a bit short of coffee options when commuting too & from the Island and Steam at the ferry terminal refuses to let customers use reusable cups. Lesser of 2 evils.
