It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

You not only expect that people perceive you as you wish to be perceived, but you also feel justified in meeting out punishment when they don't comply. Furthermore the scale of that punishment is yours to determine.

Indeed, fuck the reality the rest of us inhabit their perception of themselves even though totally fucking invisible to the naked eye is to be upheld at all times.

They see what they want to see in their "mirror to their soul".

And then expect everyone to see the same reflection. Whereas in reality what we see is...reality.

It's like being blind pissed, and not understanding why people are not in on it, why they don't think you're the world's greatest comedian, or the best looking guy in the world.

There was an earlier review about a very small man being difficult with customers. I can't remember the details, but it definitely implied a transman staff member being very touchy.

So perhaps not a one off.

Don't think I've ever been to a Starbucks, because having to figure out what sort coffee you want just seemed far too confusing. This isn't changing my mind.

It's horrible anyway unless you put an extra shot in. I haven't been in years.

I am actually astonished that there are Twitter accounts complaining that Starbucks hasn't defended their staff against transphobia. I genuinely find it hard to see how someone can watch that footage and not see how unpleasant and intimidating the staff member's behaviour is.

I'm not surprised at all. It's the same reasoning that underpins ISIL beheading infidels, anti-abortion fanatics shooting abortion providers, and Boko Haram abducting a classful of school girls. When someone becomes an extremist, the ends justify any means, no matter how awful the means are.

I don't understand the DM story. The bloke who kicked off and was clapping in Vanessa's face and calling her Karen etc is trans, isn't he? But his ire was provoked by Vanessa referring to one of the other staff as a 'lady', this person apparently not IDing as a woman. Have I got that right?

So how many trans people should we expect any one branch of Starbucks to contain?

@Rightsraptor I can assure you that it is very common in this branch of Starbucks. Most of the staff use regular names alongside their pronouns, but the extremely tall pink haired person has picked a name from Harry Potter to add to the confusion.

OMG in the article it is so clear the woman tried to get it right - called the person "lady" - I assumed she'd said "him"!!! It was because they are a they them not a lady that they went berserko!

The tall former employee with the pink hair wears a name badge with a random non gender specific word as their name. Their badge states their pronouns as "they". They are not the only one whose badge says "they" in the branch although most of the other staff have more conventional names and appearances, so it would be easy to make a mistake in the staff's minds if you didn't look at their badges..

They take an age to serve anyone in the store, spending most of their time ignoring the customers. The window was smashed.

do you mean something like Alex which is non gender specific or something like Television which is random and also non gender specific.

There are two NBPs involved. The first one on the till looks female but has "they" on their badge. They told Vanessa from Cowes that she couldn't pay with cash.

Very Tall Pink Haired Person (VTPHP) who also prefers to be called "they" kicked off as their colleague had been misgendered by Vanessa from Cowes. VTPHP was not referred to as a lady at any point.
