It’s not clear what the customer said, it’s presumed she misgenders the employee as he calls her transphobic. He calls her Karen and then either grabs the phone or the person who’s filming.

Soooo, it wasn't even the aggressive man who was 'misgendered'? Bloody hell!

Unclear I think.

In the video he says "you called me a man". It's not clear when/if that happened.

But urmmm yes he is a man as demonstrated by his strength in assaulting her partner and manhandling her out of the shop.

Love the irony of him smashing the glass doors but it does encapsulate just how strong and aggressive he was being.
Maybe he's a theybe...

She Confused

actually I believe they is a they preferring person. Although evidence suggests that the offending customer did not refer to them using unapproved pronouns but instead called the person behind the counter a 'lady'

anunlikelyseahorse · 09/05/2023 18:20

Just going to leave this here:
1979- Monty Python's life of Brian:
"Why are you always on about women, Stan?”
“I want to be one.”
“What?”
“I want to be a woman; from now on I want you all to call me Loretta”
“What?”
“It’s my right as a man”
“But why would you want to be called Loretta, Stan?”
“I want to have babies”
“You want to have babies?”
“It’s every man’s right to have babies if he wants them”
“But you can’t have babies”
“Don’t you oppress me”
“I’m not oppressing you Stan, you haven’t got a womb, where’s the foetus going to gestate? You gonna keep it in a box?”
“Here I’ve got an idea, suppose you agree that he can’t actually have babies; not having a womb…but he can have the right to have babies?”
“Good idea Judith, we’ll fight the oppressors for your right to have babies, brother er sister”
“What’s the point?”
“What?”
“What’s the point? What’s the point of in fighting for his rights to have babies, when he can’t have babies?”
“It’s symbolic of our struggle against oppression”
“Symbolic of his struggle against reality.”

So the customer called someone else behind the counter who looked fairly female “lady” and the other trans employee got upset? I wonder what the other employee actually identifies as?

Apparently the sacked worker was the store manager

ha ha, I said I bet they were the manager. Shit floats……and by shit I am not referring to their trans status but just their general gobby, entitled, aggressive persona.

ArcaneWireless · 09/05/2023 18:28

@anunlikelyseahorse

1979….

A little glimpse into the future there. Who knew?

Perhaps I should identify as a very naughty boy and have done with it.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 09/05/2023 18:28

Apart from anything else, this is abysmal customer service. Customer wants to pay with cash. Store policy is card payments only. Is this prominently explained by the entrance? It should be - but even if it is and the customer hasn't noticed, why aren't the staff explaining politely and calmly that this is the policy and they can't accept cash? Even if the customer is upset and perhaps a bit vocal about it, isn't it the role of customer-facing staff to deal with that in a professional way? Most of us have been there. Businesses don't exist to give employment to staff, they exist to extract money from customers, and employees are there to facilitate that. If these youngsters haven't grasped that, I don't give much for their chances in the world of work.

BreadInCaptivity · 09/05/2023 18:32

I think this is a really interesting study in trans entitlement.

You not only expect that people perceive you as you wish to be perceived, but you also feel justified in meeting out punishment when they don't comply. Furthermore the scale of that punishment is yours to determine.

Juxtaposition:

1 Fascism : a way of organizing a society in which a government ruled by a dictator controls the lives of the people and in which people are not allowed to disagree with the government

2 : very harsh control or authority

Oh the irony......

GailBlancheViola · 09/05/2023 18:38

Indeed, fuck the reality the rest of us inhabit their perception of themselves even though totally fucking invisible to the naked eye is to be upheld at all times.

BeginningToLookALotLike · 09/05/2023 18:39

Seems like there is a sliding scale of punishment with 'Karens' getting the worst of it. Sigh.

QueenHippolyta · 09/05/2023 18:42

So basically our bully was Karl the Manager.
Next time any penis-haver tries to pull this crap on me I'm going to call him Karl, the Manager, an entitled male bully.

Emotionalsupportviper · 09/05/2023 18:44

NO!

I AM KAREN!

<waves swo-. . . well, mop, actually. I haven't got a sword, and anyway you can hurt somebody with one of those things, They're very sharp and pointy. You could put someone's eye ou- . . . . . Oh hell! I've turned into my mother 😦😳>

Emotionalsupportviper · 09/05/2023 18:48

the irony of him smashing the glass doors

I wonder if the smashed glass doors was the real reason he was sacked. Those things are expensive, and the shop wouldn't be secure overnight until they were replaced.

DerekFaker · 09/05/2023 18:54

In the video he says "you called me a man". It's not clear when/if that happened.

I can't actually make that part out clearly enough. It seems to have more syllables than that.

Leftoverssandwich · 09/05/2023 18:54

I am actually astonished that there are Twitter accounts complaining that Starbucks hasn't defended their staff against transphobia. I genuinely find it hard to see how someone can watch that footage and not see how unpleasant and intimidating the staff member's behaviour is.

Justme56 · 09/05/2023 18:56

So the customer wanted to pay in cash and wasn’t allowed. The manager got involved and she told him she was dealing with the ‘lady’ behind the counter. The manager said the person behind the counter didn’t identify as a lady (not sure what the person identified as?) The customer then referred to the manager as a man and then the manager went on an aggressive rant because he/they/she identified as something other than a man.

Is it possible shouty clapper was befuddled by the use of 'not you, the lady' and presumed that to be implying they was not actually a wumman?

Fladdermus · 09/05/2023 18:58

That poor woman. I'd have been terrified in that situation. Do they really not understand how scared most women are of male aggression? How many of us are survivors of male aggression and are retraumatised in the face of more of it? Or do they just not care?

BreadInCaptivity · 09/05/2023 18:59

The thing is even if someone noticed a badge (or earrings Hmm) with pronouns why should we be compelled to use them?

I don't believe in gender, in the same way I don't believe the world is flat or that god exists.

My PIL are very religious but I'm not expected (nor would I) to express their faith through my language or alter my thinking to align with their beliefs.

It doesn't mean I don't like them - I do, they are very kind and loving people and I enjoy their company because just as I respect their faith, they respect my atheism.

The problem with trans ideology is that it's very specifically and I think deliberately non reciprocative.

The whole point is to force the population to their viewpoint by making any other position untenable through coercion, threats and sanctions.

Like another pp I didn't mind respecting pronouns in the past, but now I absolutely refuse to. Bugger being nice/kind.

I'm beyond the presumption that my lived reality and authentic self has to be diminished in order to placate an over indulged man-child who thinks he is special because he uses his male strength and privilege to berate women.

RoyalCorgi · 09/05/2023 19:00

As is so often the case with these stories, none of it makes any sense. So originally the store manager was angry because Ms Thomas referred to a different employee as a "lady" even though the employee didn't identify as female? But then the store manager also became angry for allegedly being referred to as a man when they didn't identify as male? (Though you don't actually hear Ms Thomas describing store manager as male on the recording, I think.) How many transgender people does this store employ? And how are you supposed to know who identifies as what sex?
