Is anyone else imagining the Stand ninja team in Liam Neeson mode... I for one cannot wait for the incoming reality show where celebs take on the challenge of being a Stand member of staff - it will show that SAS: Who Dares Wins to be childs play....

@Mollyollydolly ·
Because belief is a protected characteristic in the Equality Act
Yes, belief is.
You're entitled to your belief.
Others can exercise their right not to want to listen to them.though.
There's a difference.

But the staff were not "exercising their right not to listen". They were telling other people, the potential audience, what they are and are not "allowed" to listen to.

There is a HUGE difference.

I work in a theatre. If I told my boss I wouldn't work a show as I disagreed with the content he would give me the night off (unpaid).
If I told him to cancel a show as I didn't like the content he would - rightly - tell me to find a new job.

I find it hard to believe quite how arrogant these people are.

Just think how many cinema and theatre usherettes have had to put up with sexist shows and films showing night after night and they had to put up with it.

How many vegetarian waitresses have to serve meals containing meat?

Bus and taxi drivers have to put up with bad language.

How many nurses have to put up with being leered at, sworn at, and puked over?

We don't get what we want at work. That's why we are paid!

Helleofabore · 03/05/2023 22:46

It is hilarious though that Willoughby has declared that that is it for speaking on media unless they are the only person speaking. No more speaking after wonderfully intelligent and sane women, pre-recorded or live apparently.

I doubt that this promise will last at all. There is a spotlight out there and Willoughby wants it on Willoughby!

slug · 03/05/2023 22:48

Might I suggest the venue distributes these to their staff? Problem solved

Boiledbeetle · 03/05/2023 22:49

Willoughby has been reduced to tweeting photos of his Chinese takeaway menu

Boiledbeetle · 03/05/2023 22:50

Oops an accidental his there.
Oh well never mind

So what? Are you expecting 18 year old uni students to handle a situation which goes wrong?

That's who they will be employing during that period.

You want the old hands who have decades of experience of different unfolding situations in venues they have intimate knowledge of. And it sounds like they are refusing to be there.

i doubt it. This bigoted childish behavior isn’t coming from experienced staff

SueVineer · 03/05/2023 22:59

suggestionsplease1 · 02/05/2023 22:08

🤷‍♂️ one of their main comperes is lesbian, and I would honestly say that in the region of 30-40%, if not more, of the women performers are lesbian or bisexual - their sexuality is a frequent topic of their jokes. (One of the reasons, as a lesbian, I enjoy going so much!)

Compared to the UK population in general lesbians are vastly over-represented...if anything straight females probably have a case for discrimination 😂. But they let on anyone during the red raw nights, so I don't think that would stand up either 😆.

They released a statement which pretty much said in black and white that they were canceling JC event due to bigotry. It’s an easy win for Joanna.

lanadelgrey · 03/05/2023 23:00

I have a relative who worked the festival last year and will do this (not The Stand). It was pretty easy to get a job last year - no more EU students due to Brexit and fact that accommodation is hard to find at a reasonable price if you don’t already live in Edinburgh or nearby. Relative ended up doing double shifts and extra days as colleagues - mostly students - ended up fed up/overworked or bored so left. It’s fun if you like the festival but real studenty job.

There isn’t going to be violence from anyone who supports jc. Don’t be ridiculous.

jeremy Corbin is appearing- apparently anti semitism is ok with the staff just not being a woman or a lesbian

SueVineer · 03/05/2023 23:04

suggestionsplease1 · 02/05/2023 20:41

Maybe ask the staff who are refusing to work? 🤷‍♂️

Why bother- they are so bigoted that they are refusing to do their job.

we can’t have this in modern scotland. Dismiss them and hire staff who are more tolerant. About 90 % or so of the Scottish population agrees with Joanna so it shouldn’t be difficult

SueVineer · 03/05/2023 23:07

suggestionsplease1 · 02/05/2023 22:17

I'm pretty sure that if someone tried to bring a case that they were not allowed to perform because of their lesbian sexuality, The Stand could provide their extensive history of platforming lesbians and say that was certainly not a relevant factor.

It’s not relevant. You can discriminate against one black person - that doesn’t men you do so against everyone. That’s not how discrimination laws work. She has to prove causation and they seem to have pretty much admitted it

SueVineer · 03/05/2023 23:12

suggestionsplease1 · 02/05/2023 23:19

Is their capacity not relevant though?

In other situations under the Equalities Act, for eg reasonable adjustments for disabilities can take into consideration the financial cost of making provision. So a small cafe that makes £5k a year might not be able to reasonably put in a lift for customers with mobility difficulties to access their venue, and that would be a defense for them that the cost was not viable for their operations.

Could The Stand not make a similar case that the cost of ensuring adequate safety is beyond their financial wherewithal, as I really don't think they are running large profits.

reasonable adjustments are entirely irrelevant here.

The staff are bigoted and likely the venue have used them to excuse their own bigotry. You are responsible vicariously for the bigotry of your staff and must take action to stop them discriminating. This includes dismissal if necessary

SueVineer · 03/05/2023 23:15

suggestionsplease1 · 02/05/2023 23:46

Well of course, but I'm making a parallel to see if unreasonably increased expenditure is potentially relevant in other scenarios.

The increased cost is to do with the fact that it is not simply a case of hiring a few 18 year olds on £11 an hour for the night...I've already outlined in my posts why that would not be sufficient if things went wrong and they were sued on the grounds on inadequate health and safety.

Health and safety usually takes legal precedence over other concerns, does it not?

You’re not entitled to discriminate unlawfully because you claim some kind of nonsense health and safety issues. There is no reason they can’t hire staff who are not massive bigots. Everyone else manages it.

Boiledbeetle · 03/05/2023 23:19

I don't understand why the management didn't just say. You are paid to work, not to have an opinion. If you don't wish to work then we'll take that as your resignation.

DirtyDuchess · 03/05/2023 23:45

Had it been mentioned that Frankie Boyle (the bloated wokester) has shares in this venue?

Indiana2021 · 04/05/2023 00:03

Yes Frankie Boyle the disablist, rape joke telling mysoginist has shares in the Stand. The staff appear to be ok with him.
I hope they get royally sued and go under as a result. The staff might not find their next employer so sympathetic to their tantrums.

SinnerBoy · 04/05/2023 03:10

Boiledbeetle · Yesterday 23:19

It seems that having Tommy Shepherd, a full on real women have penises ideologues being a director has rather a lot to do with it. Isn't it an amazing coincidence that his venue was one of only 3 to get the full £250,000 Scottish Government grant?

And now that we see Frankie "Rape and Murder are Jolly Japes" Boil also has an interest, things become clearer. Boil is another raving TWAW.

Boiledbeetle · 04/05/2023 08:52

Quick correction on Sinnerboys post above for those who are speed reading through posts

And now that we see Frankie "Rape and Murder are Jolly Japes" Boil also has an interest, things become clearer. Boil is another raving TWAW.

Unfortunate spelling correction there @SinnerBoy ! Frankie Boyle not Boil!

This Boil, me, hello, is most certainly not a raving TWAW.

😁

WeeBisom · 04/05/2023 09:11

Wow there’s a lot of trans activists online who don’t seem to realise that gender critical beliefs are a protected characteristic in the equality act.

Lots of MSPs who seem to think the same.

SinnerBoy · 04/05/2023 09:24

BoiledBeetle

That may not have been a typo....

In any case, try how you might, I'm sure that you could never reach the lows of that, erm, fellow.

KalimbaMoon · 04/05/2023 09:26

This is the problem. Gender critical beliefs are protected under the Equality Act. Great in theory! But in practice, it makes no difference because GC people are still getting cancelled and de-platformed.

Meanwhile, a Boyle on the backside of humanity can make nasty jokes about rape, mock disabled people and swipe at talented sportswomen he finds unattractive (i.e. Becky Adlington) … yet somehow he’s a darling of the left. Make it make sense.
