Elon is wading into the puberty blocker debate!

Hardly surprising - one of his older kids is apparently trans.

SidekickSylvia · 25/04/2023 15:47

Not surprised, he's very intelligent.

Datun · 25/04/2023 15:51

If anyone's going to be a terf, I'm glad it's the person who owns Twitter.

Justine next.

JulieHoney · 25/04/2023 15:53

He may be gender critical (he’s been very open about that and has a trans-identifying child) but he’s also a 24 carat arsehole, so I won’t be dancing in the streets about his ‘allyship.’

JolyGoodBloviator · 25/04/2023 16:04

Also: he has at least one kid via surrogacy (presumably due to the intended mother’s choice, seeing as blokes only ever really need to be present for the sperm bit, even in boring, old-fashioned pregnancy-via-sex scenarios).

Still good to have him onside in the no transing kids thing tho!

HathorsFigTree · 25/04/2023 16:06

I don’t think he is an arsehole.

He has a conscience and his actions are informed by it.

Rowthe · 25/04/2023 16:13

SidekickSylvia · 25/04/2023 15:47

He really isn't...

DailyCake · 25/04/2023 16:21

he’s also a 24 carat arsehole.

I cannot forget his "paedo guy" comments about the ordinary British man helping with the underwater cave rescue, plus Twitter had to sue to force Musk to honour his deal. Stupid comments he has made also adversely affected the share price of the companies mentioned. Twat!

Dyrne · 25/04/2023 16:23

This is more likely to harm the GC cause then help it, given Elon is a grade A twat who is known for spouting controversial shite just for the craic; regardless of whether he actually means it or not.

Wanderingowl · 25/04/2023 16:23

Rowthe · 25/04/2023 16:13

He really isn't...

He really fucking is. People who say he isn't intelligent are weirdly fucking stupid. Does he make mistakes and do some stupid shit? Yes. But high intelligence doesn't mean constant perfection. He's clearly incredibly intelligent and very hard working.

Is that conscience in the room with us right now?

tedgran · 25/04/2023 16:33

His mother thinks he's a genius!

Right, fine I agree he is obviously intelligent, otherwise he wouldn't have got to where he is now.

But it doesnt stop him from being a Grade A arsehole.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 25/04/2023 16:39

He has been for a while I think.

He has good bits and bad bits. You know, like a human...

But it is definitely good for GC feminism that the owner and controller of twitter doesn't think "stop sterilising and mutilating kids because rainbows" is hateful. It means we can speak.

He is also a powerful, rich, influential man. He has reach. That is important.

HathorsFigTree · 25/04/2023 16:45

His conscience led him to rescue the most politically significant social media platform from extremist propaganda at a significant loss, and he is going to try to steer the development of AI from harming humanity.

This makes me rather fond.

Correct, people should be mindful that Musk disclosed that he has aspergers.

"Sometimes when I say something, I have to say 'I mean that' so that people really know that I mean it. That's because I don't always have a lot of intonational variation in how I speak ... which I'm told makes for great comedy." He went on to say that he has Asperger's. "So I won't make a lot of eye contact with the cast tonight. But don't worry, I'm pretty good at running 'human' in emulation mode."

Rowthe · 25/04/2023 16:13

He really isn't...

Her has a very particular type of intelligence which arises from his autism. He really is a most unusual, complex, and very interesting person.

And because of his Asperger's he doesn't have the fliter that most people do -so there is no 'side' or 'spin' to him. He says it as he sees it. His emotions are all on the surface. That can have its negative aspect too, of course.

'The Elon Musk Show' on BBC Iplayer is worth a watch.

CaveMum · 25/04/2023 17:08

@SirSamVimesCityWatch has succinctly summed up why I think this is a good thing.

Agreeing with someone on one thing doesn’t mean you automatically have to agree with them on all things. It’s ok to be happy that an incredibly influential person has the same point of view as you on an issue like this and to appreciate the reach that they have in being able to communicate to a wide range of people.

@NotHavingIt the Netflix doc about SpaceX is very good too.

His mother thinks he's a genius!

And his father thinks the exact opposite; and has no qualms in announcing it to all and sundry.

The fact that my GC views align with some loathsome people (from Trump supporters, to Tories and now Elon Musk) makes me sad.

Me too.

JellySaurus · 25/04/2023 17:29

Can't argue with this:

What research?

And definitely can't argue with this:

Every child goes through an identity crisis, but leaping to a permanent solution that sterilizes them for life before they could possibly consent for themselves is wrong. Plain and simple.

denim1700 · 25/04/2023 17:41

He has made comments like this before btw. Musk is not gender critical & definitely not a feminist. You should read what his ex-wife Justine has to say about him. He has very female-unfriendly views. He even told her on their wedding day he was the 'boss' and demanded sons from her. I'm assuming she agreed to sex-selective abortions, unless they were very, err, lucky...

Musk, like most people, knows sex is immutable and disagrees with "transing" / medical experimentation of children, that's it.

There's more to GC than knowing sex is immutable. I know that but I'm not GC.

denim1700 · 25/04/2023 17:45

Sorry, should have checked before posting. IVF, so tested before implantation.

JolyGoodBloviator · 25/04/2023 18:14

I’m not a massive Elon stan and cba to check for accuracy but his first son died and his wife’s next two pregnancies (the IVF
ones) were a twin pregnancy and a triplet pregnancy so is there any evidence that the embryos a) were deliberately sex selected and b) if so that Elon was the decision maker?
Only it’s entirely possible that they just wanted lots of babies asap hence IVF for multiples or that there were other health related reasons for going this route (or the sex selection was driven by one or both parents grief which is weird but somewhat understandable and not sexist)

Elon has since gone on to have at least one daughter (plus twins who names and sexes have not been revealed) so he can’t be totally insistent on wanting only sons?

There is quite a lot of weird stuff in the science-y way Elon’s children have been conceived but the only bit that I see as completely objectionable is the surrogacy pregnancy - the rest is weird but not arsehole-exploitation weird (and for all we know, there could be a genuine medical reason for him to have used reproductive tech.

I’m totally up for criticising billionaires where criticism is legit but not when it’s rumours - that he has largely kept his children out of the public sphere is pretty commendable, so many celebrity kids are growing up in goldfish bowls (and non celeb kids too due to social media).
