John Maclean is a really interesting man who is an alt presenting makeup artist. He’s just … John. John who wears makeup.

He simpers. He.shrugs in an exaggerated girlie way which looks ludicrous..Make up ads used to promote a glam look; now they promote the idea that women are silly and fluffy headed and on the plain side.
Why would that appeal to women?

.

Quite.

It's like a woman-face version of Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em: Michael Crawford camping it up on rollerskates.

Not really what the average woman aspires to give the image of when turning to their make up.

He has had no gender reassignment surgery,
He doesn't take hormone replacement.
He doesn't do laser removal by the state of his top lip all the time.
He play acts being female.
Womanface fits him.

His version of make up and clothes is a 1950s stereotype. This happens a lot with m2f trans. Their idea of women is short skirts and heels and looking like a slapper.

They record their journey with both hormones and laser on their TikTok, so you are misinformed. Laser takes lots of sessions before you see an effect, and at least a year. Trust me, I have PCOS and facial hair, I know.

I take total offence at the use of "queer" people dying of AIDS mentioned in the MAC ad.

At the time "queer" was a slur. Nowadays it includes a healthy dose of straight people. Plus the majority of those dying awful deaths were gay men.

Now while this whole trans movement specifically states that trans women are women, that means DM is a woman. I have no idea if DM is supposed to be a straight woman or a lesbian - according to DM and DM's supporters' own definition, definitely not according to heterosexual or homosexual - but DM is DEFINITELY not supposed to be a gay man.

As DM's target audience is young women - because Maybelline and Mac are not targeting overworked, underpaid, exhausted middle aged mothers, nor are they targeting the vast majority of men of any age - they're essentially rewriting history in this ad. "Queer" =/= gay man to that audience.

It's also hugely disrespectful to all those who suffered under that slur while they and/or their friends were dying. I have close friend who has ONE friend left from that time. All his other friends from then died before they were 35. Queer still isn't a term he can deal with.

KittenKong · 25/04/2023 08:19

I agee. Growing up with a gay sister the word that was yelled/hissed at me was ‘q’.

No one used it in a ’good’ way. It was a word many gay people would have heard as they were being physically attacked.

So no, seeing straight people ‘camping it up’ and announcing their ‘Q-ness’ sticks in my craw. They don’t know what it means.

Crunchingleaf · 25/04/2023 09:31

Glad I am not the only one really uncomfortable with the use of word queer. The peak of the AIDS epidemic would have gone over my head as I was too young.
Growing up it was a slur and anyone that used it was homophobic.
When I was in university in the noughties I knew quite a few people who came out. Myself and my friends never cared what sexuality other people were. I naively thought that society had move passed homophobia.

Homosexual people have continually shared these issues and discomforts. The TQ+ lobby does not care. Compassion/respect/care for identity and language/lived experience is apparently only for their own members.

KittenKong · 25/04/2023 20:50

I explained the cotton ceiling, male lesbians and spicy straights using the Q word to my (gay) sister (who used to roll her eyes when I said I was refusing to use XYZ product or service) and boy, was she unimpressed. She went on a very long rant.

We were going out to eat and she suggested a place that gave money to the fishy folk. I said no thanks and explained why. She rolled her eyes (she thought behind my back) - then I got a call a few weeks later when the merde hit the fan about them. She was raging (she did a bit of digging and realised it wasn’t the fluffy clouds and pretty flags it projected).

And then she saw Sam Smith…

nilsmousehammer · 25/04/2023 21:30

<shrug>

I'm done with them. And their rep is now going to be an awkward one. 'Down with the kids' and misogynist as fuck tends to be a bit of a turn off really.

I know. And this place is like a magnet for weirdos who support it.

AutumnCrow · 26/04/2023 07:18

I saw a report saying Bud had dropped 17% in sales over the controversy. Probably in the FT.

I’ll have a look.

Moomoola · 27/04/2023 10:51

DM is a glorified Audrey Hepburn cosplayer.

this. And a lot more quotes from the wonderful comments above. As far as I understand DM has had a lot of face surgery to make his face more feminine and beautiful. We’d all look amazing if we’d had the same. Still hanging onto his Willy though.

How is the MAC ad mocking women?

Because he is not wearing makeup as a man ( which he is) but is wearing makeup as womanface. He isn’t a woman. People quite rightly despise and call out blackface as offensive, why is the same level of disapproval not extended to men wearing womanface?

Idorecruiting · 18/05/2023 09:13

SkyandSurf · 24/04/2023 09:03

MAC have a long history of supporting queer causes and promoting inclusivity with make up.

This is right on brand for them.

People of all sexes and gender can wear make up.

Honestly, some people just want to hound Dylan across the internet until she disappears. Its disgusting and bullying behaviour.

If you don't like Dylan, fine. Personally, not my cup of tea either and wouldn't have heard of her if not for people complaining.

The vitriol directed at this young person and the global scale of the relentless criticism and bullying is shameful.

Good on MAC for being one of the first global companies to genuinely stand behind the queer community- I don't think they're going to back off now and nor should they.

Tampons and Sports Bras should only be advertised by biological women. These a products where biology matters. Makeup, Beer etc fine. Do you see Nike using a Transman to model jockstraps?

Grimchmas · 18/05/2023 09:54

Dylan is blurring the lines between what is a woman and what is a man.

Dylan is blurring the lines between what is an adult male and what is a female child 🤢

The cynics on the internet would say that Dylan's increasing number of sponsorships are right on track with the ultimate aims of certain movements.

I'm inclined to agree with them.

It doesn't matter that we aren't fooled.

It matters what is the acceptable party line.

If a straight man adopted a gay personna that was a set of exaggerated OTT stereotypes or a white person put on a dodgy fake accent and portrayed a bunch of racist tropes they would be cancelled faster than you can say offensive. But when a man parodies women he is rewarded with multiple lucrative advertising contracts and lauded as a role model.

Is he parodying women? He had the same mannerisms before he decided to pretend he was a woman.

I've not seen anything of DM before DM entered 'girlhood' so I have no idea how DM acted prior to deciding that DM is a 'girl' but if that is how DM behaved while claiming to be a man I'd be amazed, but even if the prancing, giggling and hair tossing was done before DM transitioned presumably it is this 'feminine' behaviour that lead DM to conclude that DM is in fact a woman. The Nike ad is just an extension of a nasty teenage boy demonstrating the concept of 'throws like girl' all exaggerated movements, stupid noises and deliberate incompetence and it is hugely insulting to women in general and female athletes in particular.

Fairislefandango · 18/05/2023 20:15

DM has made a mockery of being a woman. It's his whole persona. He is a man, always will be a man. It's insulting for companies to use someone who openly mocks women.

^This. If Maybelline had used a gender-non-conforming man to advertise their make-up, that would be fine! It's not about make-up being only for women. It's about the toe-curlingly girly simpering womanface that Dylan does. He gives me the massive heebie jeebies.

Chersfrozenface · 19/05/2023 15:04

It will he interesting to see what difference Anheuser-Busch losing its LGBTQ+ rating does for sales.

If sales remain where they are, recover or increase, the bean counters will point out that the rating did naff all for the company commercially. And making money is what it's all about, not virtue signalling.
