Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Would you ever consider a transwoman a woman?

1000 replies

ZeldaFighter · 10/04/2023 18:10

If a person had transitioned from male to female early in life and had lived quietly and unobtrusively as a woman for say 20 or 30 years, would you consider offering that person the status of "womanhood"?

Would you go on a girls night in a group with them?

Would you think differently if the person had had gender reassignment surgery?

What if they did actually pass?

What if they had a husband and kids?

This isn't a gotcha and I don't know the answers. I am instinctively annoyed by the taking away of women's things but I am also dismayed by the hurt and harm potentially caused to trans people. I'm trying to decide my own position and wondering if there are compromise positions. Apologies if this has been asked before and thank you for your thoughts.

No

FourTeaFallOut · 10/04/2023 18:12

No. You can't change sex.

rubyslippers · 10/04/2023 18:13

Womanhood isn’t a status
you’re born a woman
you cannot change sex
you can live life as you wish but you cannot co-opt women’s lives and spaces

Ramblingnamechanger · 10/04/2023 18:13

No .impossible .

Frustratedwithbadlegaladviceontheinternet · 10/04/2023 18:13

I’d be polite about it but no.

lipstickwoman · 10/04/2023 18:13

He would never be a woman. You cannot become a woman. A woman is a female, which is defined by your genes.

However if he wanted to wear women's clothes, make up etc it wouldn't bother me in the least. He can also call himself by a female name.

But never a woman.

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 10/04/2023 18:13

No I wouldn't. A person cannot change their biological sex.

SemperIdem · 10/04/2023 18:13

No. They are transwomen, they may live their lives as women, but they are not women.

Would I go out on a night out with them - yes
Would I treat them with respect- yes
Might I be friends with them - yes
Would I want them to be able to go about their day without enduring negativity- yes

Would I consider them a Woman - no, I would consider them a trans woman.

There are compromise positions but we were told TWAW #NoDebate.

I agree

Aquamarine1029 · 10/04/2023 18:16

Never. They were born a male and will die that way. Unless you are born a woman, you cannot "live your life as a woman." Fucking hell, I am so tired of this nonsense.

I feel the same.

I agree

Same here

TomatoSandwiches · 10/04/2023 18:17

It is scientifically impossible to change your biological sex, so no I wouldn't consider them a woman.

Greysilverbluehair · 10/04/2023 18:17

No, and they never pass IRL (I have known a few, of varied ages).

PonyPatter44 · 10/04/2023 18:17

I agree with @CharlotteSometimes1 . I'd welcome them as a friend if they were a nice person, but they wouldn't be a woman whatever they did.

YellowGreenBlue · 10/04/2023 18:18

OP, how about if you don't consider them to have changed sex, but you do treat them with kindness and respect? Wouldn't that be the "compromise" you're seeking?

TourmalineGiraffe · 10/04/2023 18:18

No. Not a value judgement, just a fact.

00100001 · 10/04/2023 18:18

"Would you go on a girls night in a group with them?"

No. It would completely change the dynamic having a man there.

Just like it changes the dynamic of you went on a girls night and one brought along their girlfriend.

Or if you all go on a trip to France, but one person would rather be in Spain.

Talipesmum · 10/04/2023 18:18

I wouldn’t consider them a woman but I could easily see how I’d consider them to be very feminine if they were. If they were good friends and it was comfortable with a wider group of friends I don’t see why they wouldn’t come out for a night out - I don’t tend to have just “it’s a girls night” sessions, and if they liked the same things we didn’t and chatted well and got on with us all like we did with each other, then no problem. I wouldn’t share a room in the way I would with another woman, but I think as much as possible I don’t split up people I know by sex. Wouldn’t get changed for swimming in front of them, but I wouldn’t feel weird about thinking of them as “she” if they passed. Just not for sports, changing, etc.

fabricstash · 10/04/2023 18:18

Of course I would go on a 'girls' night out with them and toilets with cubicles I am ok with but I would not think they were a real woman. btw I have never met a transwoman that passes. I have met some that would pass on a selfie but when moving it was obvious they were not female
