Do you already own anything by Nike that you no longer want to wear

Sharron Davis has just posted an idea - if you're really angry with Nike and no longer want to wear the stuff you've already got then send it back to them. I would love the thought of their offices being swamped.

The tweet is here:

A reply in the thread notes this as Nike UK headquarters

Film House, 142 Wardour St, London W1F 8DD

Anticipating someone pointing out the cost of living and wasting of clothes - if you're not going to wear something any more you've three choices, throw it out, charity shop or send Nike stuff to Nike in protest.

UK charity shops are so swamped with unsold clothes that it ends up abroad being their rubbish to deal with - so I reckon you can send your stuff back to Nike with a clear conscience.

And anticpating further criticism - I am not trying to Nike shame anyone who cannot afford to replace their running or gym gear - or just wants to wear what they already own. Nor am I trying to tell you not to buy Nike if it is the only thing you like or you don't care about the furore. Wear what you like, buy what you like!

But if you are angry, and don't want your Nike gear anymore then the above address is just a thought.

There are ways to mitigate the environmental cost of returning stuff to Nike, some suggestions re: that rather than telling people off would be helpful but that’s not the aim of the posts

you can just decide to forgo a similar delivery for something else or factor in the lack of deliveries you will get from Nike going forward

Flounder2022 · 10/04/2023 13:27

Just so I'm clear. People are really only sending back stuff they no longer use or like? Want to feel like I'm doing something and be able to tell the world I am, but not to the extent that it actually inconveniences me (and I don't include here those who don't want to send off perfectly good clothes for financial reasons). Reminds me of when I used give up stuff I don't like anyway for lent!

Justnot · 10/04/2023 13:28

That’s just cheating re: lent!

Just send back what you feel comfortable sending back. Add a card with Adult Human Female/brief note of why you're sending it back.

I've never bought Nike so sadly can't boycott or send back! What struck me yesterday though, scrolling through my instagram was just how many fit, athletic women there are out there. no doubt they all have their own little endorsement gigs. But wouldn't it have been nice if the mighty Nike had used one of them?

If you go to the NikeWomen page you will see many of them!

Why not go full throttle? Turn everything on. You and I know you won’t though. You have an electricity bill! 😂😂 sucks to be you.

Wow. Another light on. So you've prioritised expressing your opinion over the planet. How shameful and hypocritical of you.

It’s not me turning on the lights, it’s you my lovely, you’re doing it. Own your actions. It’s the same as if you said every time I post, you’ll kick a puppy. I’m not responsible for your actions in any way. That’s all on you.

Ouch, there's another one. Telly on in an empty room now.

I guess all that bollocks about you caring about the planet was just an attempt to shut up women who object to multinational corporations and misogynist wankers taking the piss out of us.

Oops. What a hypocrite.

I agree

Then do something you agree with. Nike have already profited from the stuff I've already bought. I'm not going to increase their profits any further. I'll keep what I want to and send back what I want to.

EmotionalSupportHyena · 10/04/2023 14:04

I’m not kicking any puppies but I have got several lights on and the tumble dryer.

I fucking LOVE my tumble dryer.

Yet more trans hate. Do you not realise the anti-trans campaign is rooted in misogyny and an anti gay rights agenda. Transwomen and men are not attacking women.

Mumped · 10/04/2023 14:06

I’ve packaged up a worn out gym hoodie, three lots of old joggers and some socks for return to Nike tomorrow Grin.

That is infuriating - the whole “tee hee I don’t like sports because I’m womaning.” You mean the tournament that was the most watched NCAA woman’s basketball tournament in history? The tournament that sparked national news and debates about racism and sexism because Jill Biden said she’d invite the losing Iowa team to the WH? The tournament where women were the most talked about players and the games were incredibly heated and exciting? This is a gay man’s response (probably got bullied by jocks) not that of a woman who are inspired by female athletes even if they don’t do sports. And this is the person promoting athletic gear?

I’ve told Extinction Rebellion. Most of them are hypocrites anyway. You know the history of how insulate Britain came about? An Extinction Rebellion founding member was upset he’d have to pay to properly insulate his slum properties for his tenants due to the new EPC regulations. So he started insulate Britain specifically with the objective of getting the government to pay for insulation on his rental properties.

The time they sabotaged public transport made their hypocrisy very clear.

No-one sabotages public transport if they actually routinely depend on it; such people know the devastation a missed connection can cause, and would have realised the PR disaster they were about to create for themselves.

Have you told any other campaigning groups that they can't have public protests for the sake of the environment? BLM, Free Palestine, anti-austerity protests?

Sadly, even if we as individuals restrict what forms of protest we use in order to meet environmental targets, industry and businesses will render our efforts meaningless. For example, I used to work at a Royal Mail depot, and P&O Cruises sent out thick cruise catalogues to everyone on their mailing list, multiple times a year. Companies like this have extensive mailing-lists. I remember spending entire shifts, just sub-sorting thousands of cruise catalogues.

A one-off flurry of protest mail to Nike is absolutely negligible in the context of the volume of post moved by Royal Mail each day.

Aside from the very obvious, which is collated somewhere (I forget where but someone will post the link, killing yet another polar bear) but trans people do commit crimes, often that crime is in fact attacking women.

This is a women thing, not a trans thing. If you are just peachy with being parodied then you go do you. I however am not happy at womanhood being boiled down to what Dylan Mulvaney chooses to portray. I'm sure we all remember his first day as a woman? He bought three dresses he couldn't afford and cried 16 times.

I am a woman, he does not represent me in any way. I dont own a bloody dress and I rarely cry. I also dont prance about or sound like I've been at the helium.

Cailleach1 · 10/04/2023 16:10

First conscientiousness boycott of Nike today by my good self. Needed a hoodie for pottering in the garden and pottering. Had one in my hands until I saw the symbol. Purchased a different one (not Nike). At least my two bob won't go into the promotion of womanface mockery.

Waiting until we have Nike promoting Rachel Dolezal doing a moronic turn around the garden, advertising a cricket box.

What you call ‘trans hate’, I see as a male telling the world, including Biden, what a woman is in this modern era. Or should I say ‘a girl!!’

If you are happy to celebrate a male being lauded for portraying women as ‘girls’ with horrifyingly regressive stereotypes underlying their identity… fill your boots.

I personally call this ‘misogyny’. Pure misogyny. But do crack on centring this male on a feminist board.

What I mean is that this anti-trans agenda is not driven by a love of women but from a far right, evangelical campaign against women and gay.trans people. What is that transpeople are doing that harms you exactly?

I remember that! Sitting on top of the trains, gluing hands to windows. Did you also see the litter they left behind after occupying central London? Absolutely disgraceful. I’ll tell anyone I can to be mindful of the environment, doesn’t matter how worthy the cause.

I think paper catalogues should be banned or restricted to pensioners age 65+ who don’t go online…and that should go up every year until 100% ban on sending any kind of advert in the post.

It’s always a one-off is the problem. If this is done to Nike, then in a month it will be post your plastic water bottles to nestle to highlight plastic pollution or post your empty crisp packets to complain to Walkers for screwing over potato farmers or post a Disney Princess to Disney to object to their sexist and racist stereotypes. It will never end. Posting things in protest should simply not be used as an acceptable tactic imho. Like vandalism is also not an acceptable form of protest either imho.

You mean apart from taking opportunities from female athletes?

You mean apart from portraying and being rewarded for portraying grown women as ‘girls’ and acting in ways that celebrate regressive stereotypes, and being celebrated for it?

You mean apart from the normalisation of males acting out those regressive stereotypes as a ‘girl’ and being portrayed as the ultimate ‘woman’ who is given opportunities that are beyond the reach of the huge majority of women for doing so, yet this ‘girl’ gets the ear of the president of the United States of America . After being a ‘girl’ for less than a year!

Gosh… I mean apart from that…

If you look into into, you’ll find the gender ideology movement is homophobic in its supporting of transing gender non-conforming children who would otherwise grow up to be gay. It affirms regressive stereotypes.
