Do you already own anything by Nike that you no longer want to wear

ChristinaXYZ · 09/04/2023 12:00

Sharron Davis has just posted an idea - if you're really angry with Nike and no longer want to wear the stuff you've already got then send it back to them. I would love the thought of their offices being swamped.

The tweet is here:

https://twitter.com/sharrond62/status/1645015519072854017

A reply in the thread notes this as Nike UK headquarters

Film House, 142 Wardour St, London W1F 8DD

Anticipating someone pointing out the cost of living and wasting of clothes - if you're not going to wear something any more you've three choices, throw it out, charity shop or send Nike stuff to Nike in protest.

UK charity shops are so swamped with unsold clothes that it ends up abroad being their rubbish to deal with - so I reckon you can send your stuff back to Nike with a clear conscience.

And anticpating further criticism - I am not trying to Nike shame anyone who cannot afford to replace their running or gym gear - or just wants to wear what they already own. Nor am I trying to tell you not to buy Nike if it is the only thing you like or you don't care about the furore. Wear what you like, buy what you like!

But if you are angry, and don't want your Nike gear anymore then the above address is just a thought.

How convenient you have solar panels. With the battery storage I imagine since it’s all you rely on. Purely out of interest, what’s your heating source?

No battery storage that is old tech and so inefficient! It’s much more efficient to be on the grid and share my electricity.

The excess electricity I generate goes direct to the national grid and I get a credit of 50% per KWh of what it would cost for me to draw a KWh of electricity from the grid.

So some days, I’m giving electricity and some days I’m taking electricity. This smooths out the boost on sunny days and the lull on dark and rainy days.

I usually end up getting a net payment instead of owing a bill. So I’m using a lot less electricity than I generate.

Heat is passive solar plus the odd as needed ceramic heater.

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 09:51

I am saving up for the new photovoltaic windows. These will replace my solar panels. Much easier to maintain. No worries about high winds, weight on roof, pigeons deciding to nest under panels and so on.

I am genuinely not trying to be goady, but are those Nike sports bras that I have been wearing as a female for many years now made to fit men? I am rarely confused but this has confused me. Surely sports clothes need to be made for women.
I'm genuinely not trying to be goady either, but you do realise we all come in different shapes and sizes, right? Not all of us are big titted, or whatever.
If you need a sports bra, then you need a sports bra.
There's not a one size fits all!
Would rather see a company trying to be inclusive to everyone not just people with Barbie figures

None of us have dicks, though.

None of us get invited to the White House to tell the President of the USA what it means to be a 'girl', either.

Wonder if those two things are connected somehow 🤔

@L3ThirtySeven I think you've made your point about the possible environmental impact of protesters posting back Nike products. Thank you for this opinion/ advice on this , also get that you see no problem with the sports bra advert, absolutely fine you're entitled to your opinion obviously.
What other purpose do you now have on this thread ?

The only purpose left is to respond to other posters asking me questions, flinging allegations of dishonest intentions and what not.

I’d be happy to move on, but apparently my asking us to be green in how we protest has touched a nerve. I’m as bemused as anyone. Didn’t think it was such a controversial thing to say.

A group of women is called a gossip. That’s the plural noun. Has a dark humour to it.

Sigh. I brought it on myself. I didn't think I needed to include " is commonly understood" in my criteria - kind of thought that was implicit in "everyone" - but apparently I do.

I thought it was obvious that I meant a group noun for all adult human females - a sex-specific word to replace "woman" in social and political discourse - not just a word for an arbitrary group of women, but apparently it wasn't.

Let me rephrase.

Give me one, just one, group noun for adult human females that is commonly understood, that everyone accepts is female-only, and that can be used in social and political discourse in the place of the word "Women" to make it clear the group in queston are specifically female without being delegitimised by TRAs using phrases like "transphobic dog whistle".

That said, even in the context of how you interpreted my question I'm not sure I agree that a "gossip" is specifically female-only. Defining it as "a group of women" simply means it'll pick up the same sex profile as whatever the listener believes "women" to have surely? (Assuming they know the word in the first place of course).

But nevertheless, thank you for providing, by digging out a rarely used (and clearly misogynistic) term for women, a great example of how hard it is to find a female-only group noun now that Woman is being claimed as mixed sex.

I just typo’d the e off mate, as you can see for yourself when you’ve built up enough leccy in your little battery to go back and click the links I provided.

HTH

Yes I know, unfortunate spelling error on your part.

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 10:04

@Helleofabore
”I imagine if you…”

Thats your problem. You’re in your own world imagining things that did not happen and were never going to happen. I’ve already stated my intentions clearly and repeatedly. It’s not my fault the reality doesn’t match your imagined fantasy of me. You seem to be the only one confused here as to my purpose on this thread. I kindly suggest you take a break, a deep breath and perhaps reread the thread. Cheers x 👋

What’s not commonly understood about “a gossip”? It’s not rarely used. I didn’t dig it up. It was off the top of my head.

Why should we surrender the word “women” and come up with some other word? It commonly means and is defined as adult human females. TRAs can go fuck themselves if they want to say the word “women” is transphobic. I’m not going to support getting a new word that means woman!

onwardsup4 · 10/04/2023 10:16

I find this incredibly hard to believe in the UK. Do you have triple glazing? What’s your insulation? Feel free to ignore my questions I’m just planning an off grid home and find the reliance on solar alone remarkable.

I know the term but I don't think I've ever heard it in everyday discourse, just the odd use in literature. Mostly I've come across it in the context of someone saying/writing how funny/sad it is that Gossip has this meaning rather than anyone actually using it.

Although that said, in the interest of reclaiming old slurs, a regular international feminist conference called The Gossip might be a thing of glory 😁

Oh I 100% agree. My point was that when Nike, or any other brand or cultural/political voice with great influence and reach, legitimises the use of Woman/women to include male people, it reduces your ability to use women to mean Adult Human Females and know that that is the meaning understood by your audience.

And as we have already seen, Woman/women is now being claimed politically and socially to include males, in sport, in women-only spaces, in protests, in Feminism itself.

Which is why it is so important to reject even stuff that seems trivial like Dylan in a sports bra. Not because a male is wearing woman's clothes, but because he's being accepted by Nike as a legitimate woman and that is one more drip in the erosion of Women as a female-only group.

I'm really glad you see the problem too.

NeighbourhoodWatchPotholeDivision · 10/04/2023 10:39

Personally, I'm totally convinced that it is my duty to the planet to forego the postal service and go to the Nike offices myself.

I wonder what the emissions will be to transport me, eh? I won't need a jiffy bag at least.

What's that? The emissions of my own journey would be worse? Oh dear. Are we to cancel all forms of in-person protest then? Has anyone told Extinction Rebellion?

WinnieFosterFights · 10/04/2023 10:41

What I always find fascinating is people who have obviously never campaigned about anything complaining about tried and tested techniques eg
'oh you're a fascist if you boycott a company!'
Obviously no knowledge of anti-apartheid and fairtrade campaigns
'Oh you're being hateful by sending stuff to a company office!'
Completely missed the campaigns against Nestle, etc
'oh you can't take DCs to a protest'
Never heard of Greenham or poll tax and bedroom tax protests or anti-war matches

They consistently show they have never cared about any campaigns ... except the one that tries to silence and abuse women.

Ourladycheesusedatum · 10/04/2023 10:47

hundreds to thousands more packages

God I hope its many many thousands. Make the point well enough that they cannot mistake it.

Am now tempted to go round my neighbours and see if they have any old Nike shite I can send.

Agreed! I've really enjoyed this thread. I remember the time a political party (UKIP?) gave out a postage-free address, and people coordinated to send bricks through the post, so that the party would have to pay postage on receipt.

I didn't do it and I thought it was unfair to postal staff to send bricks through the post. But no-one said anything about the environment!

Helleofabore · 10/04/2023 10:50

How wonderful that we are giving the Nike gear to the manufacturers for recycling!

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 10:50

Rhinos, what a great post.

I read alot. I’m a book editor so I have gleaned a decent vocabulary.
The Gossip as a title for a feminist conference is a great idea. Its subversive and powerful. I’d go.

If you’re curious, other collective nouns that are female are
A giggle of girls
A galaxy of governesses
An impatience of wives
An ambush of widows
A herd of harlots
A riches of matrons
An expectation of midwives
A squeal of nieces
A murmur of nuns

and the most well known, a coven of witches

“Which is why it is so important to reject even stuff that seems trivial..”
I cannot agree that everything is important or in need of rejection. Because when everything is important, nothing is important. Too, such a nondiscriminating approach muddies the waters and our opponents can all too easily weaponise any objections to the “trivial” (your word not mine) to claim that all our objections are trivial; when many are critically important.

If recycling the gear is your objective, it’s more green to do that at your local clothing recycling depot. You don’t need to post them hundreds of miles away to recycle them.

Thanks for the thread was in two minds about posting back my old Nike leggings but will certainly do so now , along with a woman = adult human female card.

I’ve told Extinction Rebellion. Most of them are hypocrites anyway. You know the history of how insulate Britain came about? An Extinction Rebellion founding member was upset he’d have to pay to properly insulate his slum properties for his tenants due to the new EPC regulations. So he started insulate Britain specifically with the objective of getting the government to pay for insulation on his rental properties.

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 09:29

@Helleofabore
Yes you misunderstood my post as you posted that I was telling women to focus on other things. I clearly wasn’t. You were wrong. I was saying that this issue is imho not at all important. An issue can be an unimportant issue. If all issues are important, then no issues are important.

Bit of a stretch to claim my asking someone who says this is an “important feminist issue” where it fits for them in terms of priority is “humiliating” them. It’s a fair question to ask what order do you put these issues in because, as you know, women can work on multiple issues at once. 🤣

You’re still wrong, I had no “next step” of telling anyone do this instead of that in terms of feminist issues. But I see it suits you to claim your error was my plan all along because I sense you have an obsessive need to always be right.

I had no intention to shame women for focusing on this issue as opposed to any other issue. I disagreed with a poster calling this issue important.

I have been obviously criticising the OP’s suggestion of posting Nike gear to Nike offices as an environmentally irresponsible form of protest. If you want to interpret that as “shaming” go ahead. I’m fine with that. Anyone who thinks that we don’t need to consider the impact of our actions on the planet should be ashamed of themselves. What is the point of any activism if you’re going act it in a way that further endangers the life, health and security of girls- tomorrows women?

The only dishonesty here is you pretending you were right because you are claiming that you know what I was going to do next. And surprise! What I was apparently going to do, but never did, is exactly what you wrongly accused me of. How convenient a way to never be wrong. If you’re wrong, pretend the other person was going to do it anyway and call them dishonest. 🥹 How adorable.

I’ve been very clear as to my intentions on this thread that one- this isn’t an issue that I see as important and two-if women want to protest to Nike go right ahead but please do not post things to Nike because it is environmentally irresponsible and please protest in any of the many other more green ways.

I’ve never argued with you before so have no idea what you’re saying about rallies in the US.

For someone who keeps saying this is a very unimportant issue, you really do post an Awful lot about it.

You know what I do if I start reading a thread that turn out completely unimportant to me, I scroll on by.

onwardsup4 · 10/04/2023 10:16

@L3ThirtySeven You are derailing the thread so I think moving on is a great idea.

I’m not derailing the thread. It’s perfectly relevant to ask that we consider keeping our protests green and environmentally responsible. There’s no point fighting for women’s rights if by doing so we leave an uninhabitable planet.
