Do you already own anything by Nike that you no longer want to wear

Sharron Davis has just posted an idea - if you're really angry with Nike and no longer want to wear the stuff you've already got then send it back to them. I would love the thought of their offices being swamped.

The tweet is here:

https://twitter.com/sharrond62/status/1645015519072854017

A reply in the thread notes this as Nike UK headquarters

Film House, 142 Wardour St, London W1F 8DD

Anticipating someone pointing out the cost of living and wasting of clothes - if you're not going to wear something any more you've three choices, throw it out, charity shop or send Nike stuff to Nike in protest.

UK charity shops are so swamped with unsold clothes that it ends up abroad being their rubbish to deal with - so I reckon you can send your stuff back to Nike with a clear conscience.

And anticpating further criticism - I am not trying to Nike shame anyone who cannot afford to replace their running or gym gear - or just wants to wear what they already own. Nor am I trying to tell you not to buy Nike if it is the only thing you like or you don't care about the furore. Wear what you like, buy what you like!

But if you are angry, and don't want your Nike gear anymore then the above address is just a thought.

Every action has has an envirnomental and econmic cost. You're posting from some kind of electronic device that has one heck of a cost. You don't need to be on Mumsnet what the hell are doing here - turn your device off, save power, save the massive cost of website storage and hosting (all those servers burried in cold countries so they can keep the costs a bit lower!). There are costs in say advertising secondhand goods on ebay - again with computer use. Honestly some people are so unreflective.

I covered lots of the potential issues but knew there would still be pople complaining. Should people never campaign against anything because there is a cost? There are massive, massive social costs in letting this behaviour go unprotested. Sending used clothes is pretty minimal frankly but if you don't like it don't do it.

An electronic device doesn’t have “one heck of a cost” at the individual level unlike posting parcels does. I posted upthread that posting one average sized parcel domestically within the U.K. is equivalent to 5 years of using a smartphone.

Theres acceptable costs because they are infinitesimal at the individual level, and then there are costs that are unacceptable because they are not only unnecessary but actually quite significant at the individual level. Not all costs are equal.

Deliberate derailing isn't. But carry on standing up for men's rights if you like.

Destroying the planet is standing up for women's rights?

I’ll PM you with some info as I don’t think many are interesting in moving towards carbon neutral living. I’m really glad you are though! 😄

Thank you

raspberrywine · 10/04/2023 11:45

That’s the spirit! A wise woman once said that women can do multiple things at once. You can save the planet and boost womens mental health and protest Nike all at once. So happy to see you on board with this concept. You’d also be combatting the loneliness epidemic. So well done 👏🥳

Hellofabore is also doing her own physical and mental well-being a world of good. Exercising, connecting to people, doing something thing meaningful are all good for a long life. A toast Wine to your long life.

I think it is the being presented as the other way up. Standing up for women's rights is the worst thing you can do for the planet now. It is allegedly detrimental to the environment. So, the one thing you must never do is stand up for women's rights.

What I always find fascinating is people who have obviously never campaigned about anything complaining about tried and tested techniques eg
'oh you're a fascist if you boycott a company!'
Obviously no knowledge of anti-apartheid and fairtrade campaigns
'Oh you're being hateful by sending stuff to a company office!'
Completely missed the campaigns against Nestle, etc
'oh you can't take DCs to a protest'
Never heard of Greenham or poll tax and bedroom tax protests or anti-war matches

They consistently show they have never cared about any campaigns ... except the one that tries to silence and abuse women.

Protesting nuclear missiles being placed on British soil ≠ feeling unhappy that an influencer made a sponsored post.

Because posting parcels of used manky Nike gear is the one and only way to stand up for women’s rights?

You still going,@L3ThirtySeven ?

Blimey. I think you’ve made your point.

VerveClique · 10/04/2023 11:51

My Airforce 1s are actually Nike aren’t they? I love them though!! Bizarrely I didn’t see them as Nike.

I did avoid buying some Nike gym leggings for DD yesterday.

😂. It's okay because L3 is carbon neutral, can keep going forever. Except by engaging with this thread for so long, L3 is actually contributing to the carbon because our use in technology in replying.

I don't have any Nike clothing any more - it's mostly Decathlon these days - but if I find any old stuff I'll happily post it back without a stamp. I was offered a Nike voucher as a joining gift for my gym but I'll decline that now.

@L3ThirtySeven are you the same person as replies to lots of A Woman's Place posts on FB imploring people not to vote Tory at the next election for environmental reasons? If you are, it's extremely tedious (not to mention generally rude to tell other people where their political priorities should lie).

Who said it was the only way, besides you?

I don't think you've factored in the environmental cost in the production of electronic devices (incidentally full of toxic materials), and, and the landfill graveyards. Each click using leccy (you must live in a very warm place) is not the extent of the detriment. In fact, that may be the least. The true detriment may be the roll on energy consumption and heat generated by the production, data centres and waste. Yes, a single person's use is only a drop in the ocean of the entirety (just like a package of polyester will use very little in a ship or plane of packages).

Thankfully, a single person sending a package isn't as polluting as the barges and barges of containers of polyester tat produced to excess and transported around the globe

No, the poster is quite merrily contributing to greenhouse emissions. Despite protestations to the contrary.

Not sure if this has been posted on this thread but Sharon Davies is spot on here

Surely it’s the whole life cycle of an iphone you need to look at, not just your daily use of it?

Whaeanui · 10/04/2023 12:45

Sharron Davies has been amazing on this, a crucial voice with regards to women’s sports

Every time you post on this thread, I switch on 1 unnecessary light or appliance in my house. Just thought you should know that.

So if you really care about the planet, you'd better stop posting 🤔

I'm going to

-keep the ones I like, with the tick removed
-send them back all the shitty, sweaty old ones
-not buy any more new gear from them

I go to the gym or run 6 x a week, so get through a lot of pairs of trainers and sports bras, as do my kids.

Why not go full throttle? Turn everything on. You and I know you won’t though. You have an electricity bill! 😂😂 sucks to be you.

Thanks for the thread was in two minds about posting back my old Nike leggings but will certainly do so now , along with a woman = adult human female card.

Ah, even better. Not just sending old shit back but including a card. Adult human female in fact. Best option ever.

I'm sure someone will come along very shortly to admonish us silly girlies for even thinking about adding to green issues by sending a card. Wont somebody think of the children.

faffadoodledo · 10/04/2023 13:24

I've never bought Nike so sadly can't boycott or send back! What struck me yesterday though, scrolling through my instagram was just how many fit, athletic women there are out there. no doubt they all have their own little endorsement gigs. But wouldn't it have been nice if the mighty Nike had used one of them?
