Do you already own anything by Nike that you no longer want to wear

Sharron Davis has just posted an idea - if you're really angry with Nike and no longer want to wear the stuff you've already got then send it back to them. I would love the thought of their offices being swamped.

The tweet is here:

https://twitter.com/sharrond62/status/1645015519072854017

A reply in the thread notes this as Nike UK headquarters

Film House, 142 Wardour St, London W1F 8DD

Anticipating someone pointing out the cost of living and wasting of clothes - if you're not going to wear something any more you've three choices, throw it out, charity shop or send Nike stuff to Nike in protest.

UK charity shops are so swamped with unsold clothes that it ends up abroad being their rubbish to deal with - so I reckon you can send your stuff back to Nike with a clear conscience.

And anticpating further criticism - I am not trying to Nike shame anyone who cannot afford to replace their running or gym gear - or just wants to wear what they already own. Nor am I trying to tell you not to buy Nike if it is the only thing you like or you don't care about the furore. Wear what you like, buy what you like!

But if you are angry, and don't want your Nike gear anymore then the above address is just a thought.

For someone who keeps saying this is a very unimportant issue, you really do post an Awful lot about it.

You know what I do if I start reading a thread that turn out completely unimportant to me, I scroll on by.

The thread is very important to me because it is advocating planet destroying actions.

You think me asking us not to protest in a way that harms the planet and therefore all future generations of women is “silly trolling”?

Are you a climate change denier?

If recycling the gear is your objective, it’s more green to do that at your local clothing recycling depot. You don’t need to post them hundreds of miles away to recycle them.

Yeah, but I get to see some other mumsnetters who have said they are doing it too! Bonus!

And by the way, I’ll be taking public transport which will be running anyway.

Fucking bigger bonus bonanza!!!

Recycling, using public transport and making sure Nike knows why!

Can it get better than this?

Cailleach1 · 10/04/2023 11:05

Helleofabore · 10/04/2023 10:50

How wonderful that we are giving the Nike gear to the manufacturers for recycling!

That is wonderful indeed. Get them to recycle the old stuff (not just the pretence of 'greenwashing', but in an environmentally friendly way). Stop detrimental production and employment practices too (which probably disproportionately disbenefits women and children). I'd say the detrimental effects of their excessive production and associated transportation are truly shocking.

Central to this would be stopping direct discrimination against, and promotion of the piss taking of, women.

In short, it would be beneficial to the environment to give such a nudge, encouraging them to do all that, along with being an ally to women. In the jargon.

The hyperbole on this thread now has gone past the moon!

“Nike decides womanhood is a mixed sex lifestyle choice.”

A clothing company cannot decide or influence what is womanhood. What clothes you wear is a lifestyle choice.

I am visualising all the Victorian men saying the exact same thing about clothing companies daring to make and sell trousers to women at the turn of the 20th century. The same knee jerk reaction that women are somehow threatening their manhood by wearing trousers instead of skirts.

It’s just clothing! Womanhood isn’t defined by wearing a sports bra, ballet tutu or eyeliner any more than manhood isn’t defined by wearing trousers or boy short knickers or combat boots. I’m secure in my womanhood, so I don’t see Nike sports bras being worn by male bodied people as a threat to my or anyone’s womanhood in the slightest.

Good point about it just being clothing, it is to me as well

Well, it is in relation to the promotion of a prancing penis haver claiming to be a woman for XXX days.

Well done you. The patriarchy has done its job excellently in your case.

A grotesque parody of femininity performed by a male is invited by one of the most powerful men in the world to the seat of power to speak on what women and girls need from power, and you celebrate it.

You are indeed obedient. Congratulations.

Posting a parcel isn't destroying the planet. Could you go and post irrelevant goady bullshit somewhere else please?

Whaeanui · 10/04/2023 11:13

They consistently show they have never cared about any campaigns ... except the one that tries to silence and abuse women.

Yes they do indeed.

Excellent point.

So, wonderful though that public transport can be had so that for many people it is merely time.

Tell you what, I will walk to each and every person’s drop off point and collect all the items using public transport in between so no poster has any more need of such fuckwittery to derail this thread anymore.

Let’s keep the hyperbole going.

Deliberate derailing isn't. But carry on standing up for men's rights if you like.

I'm going to learn to drive for the first time and buy my first car just so I can drive back and forth to all the Nike stores in the UK buying stuff and then returning it.

Helleofabore · 10/04/2023 11:24

So let’s see. If the post office is using electric vehicles to deliver mail to the distribution centres, does that make it ok?

My posties walk everywhere, they are very fit. They are not using anything but their own energy to deliver.

WinnieFosterFights · 10/04/2023 11:26

I've just realised you often see sealions lounging on grey rocks. It makes those terms quite apt.

L3ThirtySeven · 10/04/2023 11:27

Whaeanui · 10/04/2023 10:20

So some days, I’m giving electricity and some days I’m taking electricity. This smooths out the boost on sunny days and the lull on dark and rainy days

I find this incredibly hard to believe in the UK. Do you have triple glazing? What’s your insulation? Feel free to ignore my questions I’m just planning an off grid home and find the reliance on solar alone remarkable.

I’ll PM you with some info as I don’t think many are interesting in moving towards carbon neutral living. I’m really glad you are though! 😄

Bamboux · 10/04/2023 11:27

You're right, @WinnieFosterFights

I saw one recently spread out fatly on some wet grey rocks, close to an ancient stone bridge.

Bamboux · 10/04/2023 11:28

So hey... what's the best address to send the Nike stuff back to?

ChristinaXYZ · 10/04/2023 11:30

WomenShouldStillWinWomensSports · 09/04/2023 12:27

What about those of us who genuinely can't afford to replace our Nike stuff that we bought on sale/pre-maternity leave and are absolutely stuck having to wear it if we want to exercise? Is there something we can do? Because I really can't afford to throw £40 (RRP £110) trainers in the post and buy some different ones.

Write to them instead.

Hide the logos as best you can and send in photos?

Great idea!

Mind you, if I walk and collect, I can also chat to any MNers who are feeling stressed by Nike’s move and can provide a great mental health support - also crossing off another ‘very important’ thing while making my fucking point to Nike.

You can also spread the word and others can sponsor me. I will donate the money to a cause fitting on the list of important issues.

This is fucking epic!

caringcarer · 10/04/2023 11:37

I'll not be buying Nike anymore. I'm furious with their stupid ad. All the millions of women to choose from and they choose a man pretending to be a woman.

ChristinaXYZ · 10/04/2023 11:38

PinkyU · 09/04/2023 12:59

Wouldn’t a better idea be to sell your unwanted items cheap the donate the money to a charity that promotes or supports your cause? That way no clothes are being sent to landfill, charities are being helped and others get quality items of clothing/footwear they’d otherwise not be able to afford.

Surely this is better than sending clothes to a head office who will send them to landfill?

The economic and environmental waste that’s being encouraged is pretty poor.

Every action has has an envirnomental and econmic cost. You're posting from some kind of electronic device that has one heck of a cost. You don't need to be on Mumsnet what the hell are doing here - turn your device off, save power, save the massive cost of website storage and hosting (all those servers burried in cold countries so they can keep the costs a bit lower!). There are costs in say advertising secondhand goods on ebay - again with computer use. Honestly some people are so unreflective.

I covered lots of the potential issues but knew there would still be pople complaining. Should people never campaign against anything because there is a cost? There are massive, massive social costs in letting this behaviour go unprotested. Sending used clothes is pretty minimal frankly but if you don't like it don't do it.

That’s the spirit! A wise woman once said that women can do multiple things at once. You can save the planet and boost womens mental health and protest Nike all at once. So happy to see you on board with this concept. You’d also be combatting the loneliness epidemic. So well done 👏🥳
