Do you already own anything by Nike that you no longer want to wear

Sharron Davis has just posted an idea - if you're really angry with Nike and no longer want to wear the stuff you've already got then send it back to them. I would love the thought of their offices being swamped.

The tweet is here:

https://twitter.com/sharrond62/status/1645015519072854017

A reply in the thread notes this as Nike UK headquarters

Film House, 142 Wardour St, London W1F 8DD

Anticipating someone pointing out the cost of living and wasting of clothes - if you're not going to wear something any more you've three choices, throw it out, charity shop or send Nike stuff to Nike in protest.

UK charity shops are so swamped with unsold clothes that it ends up abroad being their rubbish to deal with - so I reckon you can send your stuff back to Nike with a clear conscience.

And anticpating further criticism - I am not trying to Nike shame anyone who cannot afford to replace their running or gym gear - or just wants to wear what they already own. Nor am I trying to tell you not to buy Nike if it is the only thing you like or you don't care about the furore. Wear what you like, buy what you like!

But if you are angry, and don't want your Nike gear anymore then the above address is just a thought.

Does anyone think Nike would ever in a million years hire a Trans Man to "model" their men's wear?
The shit us women put up with however that daft video was the biggest slap in the face yet..
Dd's needed runners this weekend, we always got them Nike since they started school... Ordered them sketchers. Will never purchase Nike again after that & neither will my dd's.

What, like this?

I don't have any Nike stuff to post, but I am aghast some people on this thread thought Australian MNers are too stupid to google their own nation's Nike company headquarters.

Apart from anything else, have you not seen the price of international postage?

And I very much doubt that postal companies would ship masses of parcels via international post, without it being throughly paid for upfront. Before any of it went on the boat, the central sorting office that handled international deliveries would contact Nike HQ to confirm Nike was going to pay for it, and the customs charges too.

They wouldn’t even have to drop it off at the headquarters though!! There are Nike stores in Australia!

I am sure if a steady stream of women dropped their things back at the stores it would be fed back to headquarters that people were unhappy.

My Nike trainers are old and worn, I’d happily send them back.

DH has a couple of pairs of trainers, one barely worn yet, not sure we could financially justify returning them. Same with DCs, 4 pairs of trainers, I spent a small fortune over Christmas on leggings, socks, hoodies, T-shirts as well as the other older clothes they have but still wear.

Id love nothing more than to protest by returning stuff to them, reality is I couldn’t afford to. I won’t be buying any more Nike products though.

You have proven me wrong @Flounder2022 I stand corrected. A nice serious, masculine video too for the athlete, nothing to fault it with.

However the prancing of Dylan M is just making a piss take out of women. Did they actually think their target audience was going to support & enjoy it?

It’s not important at all. We simply disagree on the importance of it.
Please do let me know where you think this issue is in the following list:

  • womens maternity wards
  • violence against women
  • attacks on women’s rights activists
  • womens MH units
  • womens prisons
  • womens rape crisis centers
  • womens DV refuges
  • womens personal care when disabled/elderly
  • womens gyms/changing rooms/showers
  • womens sports
  • sexism and the gender pay gap
  • pregnancy discrimination
  • dying in childbirth
  • drugs not tested on women
  • gender pension gap
  • motherhood career penalty
  • CMS not being enforced
  • unfair divorce settlements
  • unfair sentencing by justice system
  • misogynistic police force
  • jobs restricted to women
  • awards restricted to women
  • bursaries/fellowships for women
  • crime statistics collected by sex not gender

A home video of a transwoman being ultra-feminine and prancing about while wearing a Nike sports bra posted online? It’s nothing. It’s not worth the mental space you are giving it.

And women can’t focus on multiple things at once? As well as make their own choices as to what they focus on?

You don’t see this as important, that is your own opinion. Other women make different choices to you and may be very active on multiple projects and still wish to discuss this.

How bizarre to be trying to direct women’s attention and efforts? If you weren’t interested in this topic, why didn’t you scroll past instead of trying to shame others?

Yep.

It takes twenty minutes to stuff a pair of leggings in a Jiffy bag and drop it at the post office, much less time than some people have spent criticising women’s activism choices on this thread 🤷‍♀️

“How bizarre to be trying to direct women’s attention and efforts?”
That’s what you do best, isn’t it? After all you’ve just told me:
“why didn’t you scroll past instead of trying to shame others?”

That is trying to direct my attention and my efforts. I see you are do as I say, not as I do type of person.

“If you weren’t interested in this topic,..” Oh, I but I am interested in the topic. The topic is posting old Nike stuff to Nike to make a statement.

My interest in the topic is to wave the climate crisis flag and point out how this is an environmentally stupid action to take. And to squash the weak justifications for such unnecessary CO2 emissions. Boycotts are not buying things. It’s not a boycott to post old things you’ve already bought to offices. Boycotts can encourage change. Posting old things to offices is just virtue signalling nonsense that will change nothing, except worsen the climate even faster than it is already!

The more convenient something is, the more likely it is to damage the planet. If we are to survive the climate crisis it’s really important to not do things that make it worse.

Their target audience is probably transwomen. I’m sure they are thrilled to have representation.

Bláthannabuí · 09/04/2023 22:55

To be fair I think Caitlyn Jenner as a former Olympic athlete would be a much better ambassdor if the target audience is TW.. The Dylan M video is just plain daft.

@Bláthannabuí she is an influencer. As I am sure you know, influencers tend not to be in adverts, they endorse the products to their followers. She has 1.8m followers on instagram. I take it that's their target audience.

Trans women and also women who don't have a problem recognising that we all come in different shapes and sizes so don't mind seeing trans representation as well, I'd have thought

And you are still here trying to tell women that they should be focusing on other things when most of us are still doing projects in the areas you listed. And we still wish to make a point to Nike. Because we feel it is worthwhile.

No, I did not tell women to focus on those things instead at all. Perhaps you should RTFT before you come in guns blazing like a cowboy. My list was a list for a poster to tell me where this “important feminist issue” with Nike thing fits in amongst well known important feminist issues (which she ignored).

I am saying that the suggestion in the OP to post old Nike things to Nike is environmentally irresponsible and please do not do it. Just do a boycott or write a complaint.

You can still object to Nike paying an TW influencer for wearing their clothing without harming the planet. It’s not necessary to cause extra CO2 emissions to make this point.

I certainly do not mind. I think the objections are silly, but that if certain women want to object then they should be environmentally responsible in how they signal their displeasure.

Ourladycheesusedatum · 09/04/2023 23:23

Sigh, what emissions? Pretty sure our local postal services, wherever we are in the world already go to the various Nike headquarters daily.

Bláthannabuí · 09/04/2023 23:25

@Helleofabore I felt really good about my small boycott this evening.. I have always bought Nike runners for me & my 3 dds.. They need new ones so instead of getting their usual Nike, I ordered 3 pairs of sketchers... 165 euro that would always have gone to Nike.. 165 euro is a drip in the ocean to them but if thousands more did the same their bottom would definitely be dented.
I need to wait til pay day to get my new runners but going for new balance 110 euro.. Previously would always have bought Nike.

Oh my. So, I suppose you think that your holiday in Ibiza didn’t result in any extra carbon emissions because “the aeroplane was going there anyway”. Or your easy peelers shipped from Morocco didn’t cause any carbon emissions because “the ship is coming here anyway”.

In short, that’s not how it works. You see every letter or package 📦 has a weight and the more packages that are shipped 📦 📦 📦, the more weight there is, meaning more aeroplanes or vehicles are then needed to transport them to their destination.

To start a campaign encouraging hundreds to thousands more packages…that’s going to have a carbon footprint to it. There is no avoiding it.

EmotionalSupportHyena · 09/04/2023 23:32

Hundreds to thousands?

Excellent - should be a noticeable protest then.

And the point of you asking for someone to prioritise where they thought this would fit in the list?

Yes. I completely understood the exercise you wanted a poster to do. It is your way of emphasizing your point.

And again, women can do multiple activities at once. Your priorities are not everyone’s priorities, and some women wish to do this.
