I don’t know if she can win given it’s been a Labour constituency since it was formed (in 1980s) and was held by Frank Dobson and then Keir Starmer and according to data is a ‘progressive’ constituency, average age 41 and good job security. Interestingly I can’t find data on constituency make up by sex.

I’m not sure she’s expecting to win. She knows she can cause an awful lot of disruption though. And I say bring it on!

I still don’t quite get how antivaxx became a right wing thing? Is it just another smear?

Or is it because the libertarian faction is more visible on the right than the left?

Have we just imported another Americanism without realising that it doesn’t quite land the same here?
(See also: Critical Race Theory and terms such as ‘BIPOC’ - doesn’t really work when the ‘indigenous people’ were white, white people are not a minority, the settlers didn’t look significantly different, it all happened so long ago that no one really knows who the direct descendants of indigenous people are, and the only people who actually care are the handful of idiots who used to call themselves the BNP but keep rebranding because they know no one likes them?)

My eldest was little at the peak part of the MMR controversy (before the thorough debunking) and the people who were worried and refusing it for their kids were the crunchy, hippy, greenpeace, CND, vegetarian cafes & carrot stick mums who probably voted for the anti Iraq war Labour breakaway Respect Party or the Greens, depending on what parties were standing in their area, or didn’t vote at all.

🤯🤯🤯

My experience, as a vaccine centre volunteer in Keir's constituency was that the people who needed most reassurance were often from ethnic minorities, where rumours had spread widely. Or from places like Eastern Europe where you did not trust Government information.

A common scenario was elderly Asian being brought in by a member of a younger generation. Younger relative explains that elderly relative was high risk if they caught Covid. Elder relative repeating weird and wonderful stuff they had heard. (A great West Indian woman aged about 60 told me that she had heard that the jab would make her infertile but this did nor worry her. I suggested she might be more worried if it made her fertile.) I am surprised that Sadiq had not come across similar.

But hey. You disagree. You are a Nazi and anti-Vaxxer.

Go Posie.

Boiledbeetle · 30/03/2023 11:56

One of my best friends refused to have the covid vaccines. She had her reasons for not wanting it. I had my reasons for not wanting it.

We didn't agree with each others stance but we didn't let it ruin a friendship. It definitely didn't turn my left leaning friend into a right wing bigot!

Although I may gloat occasionally that she got covid and I didn't!

We do however agree on issues to do with this current shit show that is life and she also likes KJK.

Neither liking what KJK has to offer, or views on Vaccines, Brexit or wallpaper choices makes someone suddenly change their complete outlook on life, or their political leanings.

So why do people keep trying to make it so?

Boiledbeetle · 30/03/2023 11:57

I had my reasons for wanting it! A not sneaked on there!!

FOJN · 30/03/2023 12:07

I think we are adopting a more American approach to politics.

Since the Walk Away campaign I've noticed quite a few YouTubers, who say they were once Democrat voter's, embrace the entire Republican package. They've gone from pro choice to anti abortion, in favour of gun control to vocal second amendment advocates and acquire religion along the way too.

It's hard for me to understand because I don't endorse any political ideology in its entirety and I know from listening to Matt Goodwin that 60% of the UK electorate don't feel represented by any political party.

Whaeanui · 30/03/2023 12:14

It’s funny because Jacinda Ardern blamed ‘imported politics’ ( heavily insinuating US/Trump style ) was the reason for the ‘anti vaxxers’ who protested in nz against mandatory vaccines. With no self awareness at all. The term anti vaxxer and calling anyone questioning government conspiracy theorists and Trumpian, is the actual imported politics. Many of those protestors were Maori with valid historical reasons for being uncertain and fearful of the government and ‘one source of truth’.

I wouldn't call notorious anti vaccine fellow Pierced Corbyn right wing, quite the opposite.

On people not wanting it, I've a Jamaican friend, who eventually had two and a booster. He told me that most Black Carribbeans are highly distrustful of White doctors, because of historical abuses inflicted on them.

CaveMum · 30/03/2023 12:22

The problem is that most people (at least from my own experience) are actually centrists by nature, they may lean a bit left or a bit right but generally speaking we're all quite mundane and middle of the road. The major political parties in this country, and everywhere else I guess, have chosen to diverge from that road leaving the majority of us stranded in the middle.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 30/03/2023 12:22

Certainly amongst my friendship group (totally unscientific sample!) those who chose not get the vaccine were almost all first and second generation Black British of Jamaican or Caribbean heritage. They just didn’t trust the government not to fuck about with them (and knowing a little about some of the many awful non-consensual medical experiments inflicted on minority populations over the last hundred years, I absolutely got where they were coming from).

Sound like Māori people in NZ had similar concerns?

And yes, I happily had my vaccine but vehemently opposed a mandatory vaccine policy.

People are not the property of their government.

I'm sure the new party can come up with policies that will appeal to voters. An end to corruption, resources spent on eliminating tax evasion, something on housing - I need to think about that one but maybe government backed bonds to build council houses and maybe get really radical and nationalise land banks without immediate compensation, although promised for the future - and some small policies like ending the parking scams, the Tories have kicked that into the long grass but that would be surprisingly popular. Millions of people pay these fines each year and most are pretty unhappy about it. An end to all government funding of diversity champions or training from Stonewall, mermaids et all and spend the money saved on expanding NHS dental services.

Ideas people?

Yes I agree , she is asking for more candidates and if common sense ideas can be bought to the table then it will make the candidates more appealing . As for finances we could always do what KS does …… say he will decide on taxes and NI a when he gets in and looks at the state of the budget 😂 that’s one area off the hook .

I would suggest the hospitals need to build nurseries and free childcare for all health workers together with more flexible working hours . And yes we would have to pay more on NI ….. or could 1/2 percent on VAT a pay for that ?

ofsted should exist but needs an overhaul . And a time scale to put things right before the final grading .

schools should be 9-5 but in that time homework and marking would be done so all pupils and teachers are free for the evenings plus not such long holidays but term time holidays should be allowed without massive fines unless in exam years .

three sets of toilets where ever possible . His / hers / freestylers. So no arguments and the third ones can be used by whoever feels comfortable .
definitely the elderly and disabled MUST a have the right to chose the sex of the person who is doing their intimate care

all of what has been proposed by Posie is sensible . If trans people want their own refuges dating sites clubs etc no problem .

I am sure there are lots of arguments against the above but we need some radical ideas so not to blend in

Unsure33 · 30/03/2023 12:25

NHS is the biggest one , it actually has a huge amount of funding so it needs a massive shake up and I think that should come from within really . Surely the people on the ground know the problems ? They can see waste / staffing problems / lack of flexibility etc ?

Unsure33 · 30/03/2023 12:27

Return of local hospital facilities for care before returning home or minor treatments . Travelling miles to huge hospitals and having no transport or nowhere to park is so stressful for older and disabled people when sometimes it’s only a routine appointment .

😉

It’s all just a fuck ton of DARVO!

Those who demand and enforce vaccine mandates are the authoritarians, not the people who go ‘hold on a minute, this sort of shit hasn’t historically gone well for us, so we’re going to give it a swerve, at least until there is a bit more evidence’

I would like my daughter's to be helped to look after their own children at home as I did. If you want to work great, I don't think every mother does.

That was the Scottish indyref. Actually surprisingly apathetic turnout for Brexit referendum.

@landOFconfusion I would say Farage was pleased with the result. Extracting ftom a 40 year union is a complicated matter. Establishing that there are two biological sexes would be straightforward.

Eh? The referendum turn out at 72.2% was the highest since 1992. It beat the 1997 general election turnout that ushered in New Labour. I certainly wouldn't call it apathetic, not when the 2001 general election was 59.4%.

Lala was right in percentage of overall electorate terms though, just with much smaller numbers of voters.

Fear and loathing in New Zealand

The mob lunged towards me, screeching and grabbing, and I knew that if I fell I would never get up. I’ve stopped expecting mercy from anyone whose motto is ‘Be kind’ but the event last week was terrifying. I was sure in that moment, on the New Zealand...

Good article, thanks for posting. Powerful final paragraph

Women were injured that day, women who you may never hear about. You will never know their names. They didn’t get to hop on a plane and leave; they have to stay and live in a country that has told them their lives are not worth protecting

trans incels to the left of me and Nazis to the right, and here we were stuck in the middle and blamed by the media and politicians for the Nazi salute that occurred. I’ve been asked following that incident whether I have sympathies with the far right, but seriously, who does? It’s a vile ideology and frankly anyone convinced by it in 2023 is pathetic.

Thanks for sharing, this I’m posting for all those total losers who immediately aligned her and the other women with Nazis and contributed to inciting hatred against her and the women, many indigenous, in Auckland. Hang your heads in shame you fucking bastards.

But your daughter’s partner might want time off too and not work. Then what?

7Worfs · 30/03/2023 14:02

Reading KJK’s account has me thinking - what turns (I’m assuming) ordinary people with ordinary lives and jobs into rabid zealots ready to use deadly violence in order to prevent women from saying that women don’t have penises.

Is it lifelong conditioning, social engineering, brainwashing, and why only some people fall for it?

What would it take for someone like that to begin trusting their eyes and mind rather that what they are manipulated to believe in?

What’s your point?
