The murderer who came in and killed 3 children and 3 adults is trans and called Audrey, I am confused as to their biological sex.

It’s a woman who identifies as a man.

miraveille · 28/03/2023 05:00

He's male

Bellagio40 · 28/03/2023 05:18

A woman who identifies as a man

EmmaGrundyForPM · 28/03/2023 05:20

natal female who identified as a male

miraveille · 28/03/2023 05:23

My mistake above, I was confused by the reporting.

Tradeup · 28/03/2023 05:42

Same@miraveille .

Thanks everyone, it has been very confusing, as they are calling her she and saying her name is Audrey and then saying she was trans, so I was confused. Now I see that she was identifying as male but they are referring to her with female pronouns. So I guess there definitely are circumstances where your new identity will be ignored in preference of clarity.

If that’s true it’s a new policy (which would be great and make reporting far clearer). I heard the BBC refer to ‘a woman who identified as trans’, so based on the Isla/Adam reporting (and that this happened in the US) I assumed MtF.

Of course this might be MtF = woman
and also FtM = woman

In the case of criminal activity of this sort, ‘woman’ in the headline is always more unusual, so more likely to get clicked….?

SpinningTooFastIWantToGetOff · 28/03/2023 06:01

Very, very sad. Those poor families.

Looks like the killer took on male pattern murder to try affirm her identity.
When I saw the news last night, I assumed it was a man.

Yes I thought that. It's stirred up a lot of speculation with this ambiguous early-stage reporting. Not that I want more violent crime in the news, but I would be interested to see if reporting is, shall we say, consistent in future.

MrsTerryPratchett · 28/03/2023 06:11

It's confusing because the media seem to call male rapists 'she' when they identify as female but a female shooter 'she' when they identify as male.

It does look like bias but I'm sure it can't be.

SpinningTooFastIWantToGetOff · 28/03/2023 06:16

From the Guardian:

The shooter was named as Audrey Elizabeth Hale, 28, and from Nashville.
Drake said Hale was a former student at the school. He also said Hale identified as transgender.

That sounds like the murderer was male? Otherwise they are misgendering him? Also interesting use of 'identified as' transgender, but could just be reporting what was said.
Until journalist relearn the skill of reporting the facts, we can only speculate 🧐

This is deliberate bias, IMO. Creates an exaggerated impression of violence in women.

I read somewhere that this is the 139th mass shooting in the US this year. Absolutely awful. And we just accept the children get shot now.

NotAnotherBathBomb · 28/03/2023 06:25

Interesting. I had assumed trans woman aka male, but looking at photos I did think they 'passed' really well, well now that explains it.

I wonder if the difference in reporting (as PP mentioned referring to male-bodied rapists as women) is due to it happening in Tennessee, which is a conservative American state and therefore has very different views to trans-identified people.

knittingaddict · 28/03/2023 06:28

Latest reporting makes it clear that this is a female to male transperson.

I'm surprised/not surprised by the early reports that she was a woman. I guess men and women are treated differently, even when they are trans.

Makes me wonder if they were on testosterone as a contributing factor. Also wonder if they had other issues going on, since we know that many transman transition while having autism or mental health problems.

Daffodilwoman · 28/03/2023 06:29

Yep either stick to calling someone the gender they identify with for all cases or don’t. Total bollocks to insist trans men are referred to as women but trans women are also referred to as men. Can’t even stop the misogyny here.
I don’t care what gender or sex the killer was. I’m not shocked. It’s the USA. It’s just another incident. Won’t be the last.

Daffodilwoman · 28/03/2023 06:31

Typos. That should read trans women are also referred to as women.
You can’t have it both ways.

Or...she's just a female murderer

bellinisurge · 28/03/2023 06:32

If it had been a bloke, you can bet they'd be calling him by female pronouns. Those poor children and teachers. Their poor families. And the survivors.

Give mentally ill people "affirming care" including testosterone rather than therapy, in a country where guns are easily accessible- tragedy waiting to happen.

MayhemMostly · 28/03/2023 06:48

Poor victims, horrendous for families left behind.

America needs to sort the gun laws out asap.

Is this a typo? I heard 13th school shooting this year on radio 4

The family must be as confused, who are they angry with a she or he?

If it was a male the media would use female pronouns, it's female so that isn't happening.

Was she on testosterone?

Words are Violence and violence is ok according to the ideology, how will they spin 9 year old bigots?

Circumferences · 28/03/2023 06:58

It's galling that we are supposed to accept "she exposed her penis" for transwomen, and simultaneously "she killed" for transmen.

Anyway, pronouns aside, what a horrific tragedy. Those poor children. I never fail to be shocked by school shootings. I guess that's the point, but ... children ffs. It's so sick.

BoredOfThisMansWorld · 28/03/2023 06:59

I can't even go there with American news reports any more. Until they decide they care about human lives more than the right to bear arms, what's the point? I cannot imagine what it's like sending a child to school in America. Or growing up accepting this as a risk.

If the shooter is a transman how the fuck do Guardian explain the deadnaming and misgendering? Owen Jones is gonna explode, right? There's no way they'd be quite so blatant in their misogynist double standards, is there?

SilverGlitterBaubles · 28/03/2023 07:02

I'm not sure it matters, what matters is the tragic loss of life and how many more lives have to be lost to guns in America before they will actually do something about it.

WarriorN · 28/03/2023 07:02

Another horrific murder. There was a woman who happened to be on holiday speaking to the news crews, who had survived another shooting the previous year.

She mentioned that guns were now the leading form of death for children and teens in the US.

They really need to do something.

I noted the use of female in the media / bbc. I hope this is policy going forward. Can't escape sex. Also hope that crime stats start to be more honest.

Interesting that it matters that it was a female shooter, statistically. Hmm
