Women's rights general conversations - Thread 4

Continuation of Thread 3.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Julia Hartley Brewer is not an odious or any kind of racist.

Exactly the same misogynistic slander used against KJK to try to shut her up.

JHB is a centrist who fights for women's rights.

dunBle · 27/03/2023 14:59

I think @SinnerBoy was being sarky @beastlyslumber

beastlyslumber · 27/03/2023 15:04

Oh! Apologies if that's so!

beastlyslumber · 27/03/2023 15:06

(Apologies for misunderstanding, not for what I said, which is correct.)

duc748 · 27/03/2023 15:29

Julia Hartley Brewer is an appalling woman. Just because I share the same view as her on one bloody topic, I am still to free to regard her in the same contempt I hold Tommy Robinson.

CryptoFascistMadameCholet · 27/03/2023 15:33

It’s a free country 🤷‍♀️

(supposedly)

Kucinghitam · 27/03/2023 15:52

I think (IMO) there's an important point here, which is that real grown-ups (which I believe all of us on this thread are) understand that people can agree on some things and fervently disagree on other things, and that's life.

No she's not. You may not like her but that's on you, not her.

CLearly people have learned nothing from this weekend.

Stop monstering women!

MavisMcMinty · 27/03/2023 17:15

JHB is vile.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/03/2023 18:00

I don't agree with JHB on many things, but she's excellent on this issue, she always gets right to the heart of it.

Came to post this completely terrifying overhead footage from Auckland. Anyone who says about what happened "it was just some soup" is not someone I consider a moral person. I wouldn't wish anyone in the middle of that violent mob.

That’s horrendous. It’s getting almost biblical when you see a physical demonstration of so much hate directed against a single woman. Remind me which is the side of hate and which of love again? Which side is advancing civil rights and which side opposing them?

beastlyslumber · 27/03/2023 18:19

MavisMcMinty · 27/03/2023 17:15

JHB is vile.

No, she's not. She's a woman you dislike.

Work out the difference, because otherwise you are just a hater. And we've seen where that leads.

MavisMcMinty · 27/03/2023 18:23

Please ignore me in future, @beastlyslumber, and I’ll do the same for you.

AperolWhore · 27/03/2023 18:32

Does anyone have any links to women’s rights groups nationally we can join? I’m googling but not getting much. I’m sharing as much content as I can online but it would be great to talk to people in real life.

I'm always going to call out misogyny, Mavis. Whether it comes from you or anyone else.

There’s the Women’s Rights Network. Unfortunately there’s not yet a group in my area and I don’t have the time, energy or skills to start one although they are very keen to get new volunteers:

Yes, I actually think the undeniable proof coming out that it wasn't what so much of the media and opinion leaders are claiming is making self identified morally righteous people double down as their cognitive dissonance is pierced, and their beliefs are shaken up. I've noticed this when other similar things have happened.

MmePoppySeedDefage · 27/03/2023 21:17

As various people have mentioned, why, when there were apparently genuine neo-Nazis to go after in Australia, did the RSOH 'anti- fascists' (sic) go after women instead?

A cynical person might conclude that they were more misogynistic than anti-fascist.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 27/03/2023 21:44

Genuine question. Why is it misogynist to call Julia Hartley-Brewer "vile"? She is a deeply unpleasant human being which has nothing to do with her being a woman and everything to do with the sort of hateful stuff she writes. I'd say the same about Rob Liddle, for example. I see them as two peas in the same pod, willing to make money out of writing hateful things that they may or may not believe in. Therein lies a problem. If you write hateful stuff often enough, even if you don't truly believe it yourself - which I have no way of knowing - then that rubs off on you and becomes an integral part of who you are.

There are a number of men and women who work as alleged journalists or columnists who are a stain on humanity and it has to do with what they write and not what gender they are. I'm glad that she's not supporting the TRAs, although I'd be gobsmacked if she was, but I can't think of anything else I've ever agreed with her on and I can think of times when I wish she'd learned from Ronan Keating that sometimes, you say it best, when you say nothing at all.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 27/03/2023 21:47

I didn't that there was a weekly #LetWomenSpeak at Speaker's Corner. I think I should try to go to one because clearly we need bigger numbers to show the TRAs that we do mean business and by business, I do mean that we will be heard, not that we want a fight with them. I'm happy to leave the threats of violence to them.

Boiledbeetle · 27/03/2023 21:47

@NotDrowningJustCrowing what sort of hateful things does she write? I know next to nothing about this woman. I've seen some of her interviews and she takes no prisoners, but I'm unaware of her hateful stances.

beastlyslumber · 27/03/2023 22:05

She's not hateful. She is just centre/right of centre.

Calling her vile and hateful is no different to calling KJK vile and hateful. It's monstering her, putting a target on her back. When her views are totally mainstream and legal.

Which dehumanisation then gives ammo to the women haters to use violence and silencing - who cares, she's vile, hateful, repugnant etc.

beastlyslumber · 27/03/2023 22:06

There's a thread about her interview with KJK where pp have talked more about this.

It's usually monthly. The next one at the moment is set for Sunday 30 April.

Boiledbeetle · 27/03/2023 22:13

So far today I've seen posters call JHB awful things. I've yet to see one of those posters explain exactly what the problem is.

It's she a convicted paedophile?

It's she a signed up member of a hate group?

Is she a far far far right highly religious fruit loop?

What has this woman done? What views does she hold that are so abhorrent?
