Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Continuation of Thread 3.

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or "Has anybody noticed this recurring theme that keeps coming up??" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Great thread from glosswitch which really captures the dynamic of what is going on. I presume it’s prompted in part by events in Auckland but has wider applications:

That is eerily accurate!

From the Glosswitch tweet:

So many people see "nice" men abusing women and think not "perhaps these men aren't so nice", but "how terrible must these women be? And if these women are so terrible, maybe I should join in the abuse"

I'd never thought of it like that, but it seems very accurate.

I'd like to bring that logic to other crimes. "Yes officer, I did punch him in the face whilst holding my keys between my fingers but it wasn't so much a punch as his face being in the way of my punchy hand and anyway, I didn't mean to cause any pain, so, you know, I'm innocent."

Boiledbeetle · 25/03/2023 18:41

I've held it together all day. Having just read that woman's account...I'm off to find lots of tissues.

2023!! Fuck me!

Kucinghitam · 25/03/2023 18:55

@DameMaud God, that was a harrowing read! Not that I would expect anyone on the so-called Right Side of History to ever acknowledge the events - not the media, not the politicians, not the BeKinds. It'll just be <crickets> or finding ways to discredit the victims.

OP posts:
DameMaud · 25/03/2023 18:58

Yes- It's so distressing knowing that this likely won't reach the mainstream isn't it?
I don't have Twitter account, but I think this is the one that needs to be put out there as much as possible. So if anyone does, please do!

A harrowing read indeed. How scary must it have been for that poor woman, for all of them?

IcakethereforeIam · 26/03/2023 00:37

Just want to leave this here for your consideration

https://www.theguardian.com/info/2023/mar/18/nominate-a-friend-to-go-to-glastonbury-festival-2023

I've done nothing with it yet, but I'm very tempted to nominate KJK and ask that you all do too. Of course the Guardian won't give the prize to her (and I'm not sure she'd want it) but it would be a nice show of support for Posey and a fuck you to the G. You're supposed to have the permission of the nominated person too. What do you think?

Nominate a friend to go to Glastonbury Festival 2023

Do you know someone who deserves the chance to go to one of the world’s most iconic festivals?

beastlyslumber · 26/03/2023 07:55

I'm not sure why KJK would want to go to Glastonbury? Maybe just stop reading the Guardian.

This, by Dennis Noel Kavanagh, is very good indeed. Worth a read if you feel a bit down.

Thanks for this!

MavisMcMinty · 26/03/2023 19:20

Oh yes, thanks for that, the last couple of months have felt like something has turned.

MavisMcMinty · 26/03/2023 19:21

…not least in me!

StephanieSuperpowers · 26/03/2023 19:45

That helped. Last sting of a dying wasp. Hopefully.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 27/03/2023 00:26

I hope that Dennis Noel Kavanagh is right but I think it's going to get worse before it gets better because far too much of the media hasn't got it yet and as long as they continue to defend the indefensible then there is still a lot of danger. I believe that we're at the beginning of the end, at least I hope we are, but the closer we get to the end the more violent the domestic terrorists get.

NotDrowningJustCrowing · 27/03/2023 00:31

I might have a look at Stonewall on Twitter tomorrow to see if they're just having a weekend break or if they are really just going to ignore everything that went down in Auckland. My guess is the latter.

I'm with you. Unfortunately the future is going to feature a lot more violence before everyone wakes the fuck up. I'm not even sure one woman ending up dead whilst just trying to speak about women or meet with other women will do it.

I'm convinced some of the protesters are unhinged enough to go for the more nuclear wipe out loads in one go option.

Good concentrated Andrew Doyle summary of Auckland events:

https://twitter.com/gbnews/status/1640081342669938688?s=61&t=vrfh73NvYySozkuIkLckQw

I enjoyed that, but of course that is merely confirmation of how Bad People I am. Nobody who is Good People would even click on that link, because purity.

Much as I enjoyed Dennis' thread, I fear he is wrong - most people simply won't get to hear about any of <waves hands> This Topic in an honest unbiased way, because most of the media/institutions/politics are complicit. (See Doyle's discussion of NZ media pious fraud). Amongst people who do know about This Topic, I'm not sure you'll find a single TRSOHer who would condemn events - I'd expect no more than a mealy-mouthed "both sides" "strong emotions" at best, and more likely triumphant delight but delicately expressed for plausible deniability.

Elly Arrow is always worth reading. Until now I’d been oblivious to the concept of a megabrothel.

https://twitter.com/ellyarrow/status/1633845351328407555?s=61&t=vrfh73NvYySozkuIkLckQw

This is a description of a proposed brothel in Amsterdam from a linked article in the thread.

The proposed erotic enter will have 100 available spaces for sex workers, regardless of their gender or sexual orientation. The facility will also include space for social services and healthcare, security, and other hospitality, entertainment, education and cultural organizations. The city also said in the past that it wants sex workers to have a more professional work environment, including break rooms and safer access.

Truly state regulated and window-dressed exploitation on an industrial scale.

On Andrew Doyle, its a tragedy that it can only be said on GBeebies. Likewise, from the odious racist, Julia Hartley-Brewer.
