I know it's a Mail link but I've not seen it up anywhere else yet:

Rishi Sunak wades into trans debate saying 'biological sex matters'

Glad to see him taking a clear position.

Good. Hopefully this signals the end of no debate and the left will follow.

HighWindows1 · 02/02/2023 22:23

Oh good god, why are there so many missing words from my previous comment

PennyToffee · 02/02/2023 22:09

You trust the Tories?

Oh my.

i think it’s perfectly possible not to trust labour and not trust the tories

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 02/02/2023 22:25

PennyToffee · 02/02/2023 22:02

What fools you are. You honestly think Rishi gives a shit about this?

They have spin doctors for this very reason.

Do you honestly think that Kier Starmer doesn’t know what a woman is? Yet he’s spinning his line too because he thinks it will get him more votes from young people at the next election. Let’s not fool ourselves that Sunak is the only one playing the game here.

dapsnotplimsolls · 02/02/2023 22:28

It would help if he could appoint an Ed Sec who agrees with him.

Pearfacebanana · 02/02/2023 22:28

Probably the most sensible and clearest thing he's said.

It will be interesting to see how labour react. They may well go even more in the opposite direction just to oppose anything he does.

bellinisurge · 02/02/2023 22:29

Labour can't say we didn't warn them. I'll never vote Tory but i ain't voting Labour.

Remind me what Labour's spin doctors are doing again? Don't worry, I found it

Touché @ResisterRex Touché

None of us believe a word that comes out of any politicians' mouth, but for him to be actually saying this out loud. Means the tide is definitely changing!

Thank fuck!

NeedAHoliday2021 · 02/02/2023 22:30

I’ve seen him demonstrate he supports women previously in relation to how he corrected journalists who called his wife mrs Sunak - she doesn’t go by that name. It was subtle but nice to see.

PennyToffee · 02/02/2023 22:30

i'm sure all the women who are struggling to pay the bills under this Tory government will be delighted that Rishi knows what a woman is. It will keep them warm on the cold winter nights.

WomanIsBiology · 02/02/2023 22:30

I might not agree with him on some other things, but I believe he means this and it isn’t merely a ploy.

Starmer is the one playing the dangerous game with women’s rights.

amprev · 02/02/2023 22:33

As a former Labour Party member and now a bit of a political orphan, I am finding myself not caring about his reasons for this statement. I'm just glad someone with a high political profile is actually saying it.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/02/2023 22:33

if he knows what a woman is, why isn’t he doing anything to help or support us on issues that matter?

no matter what mn thinks, this will not be an issue that the majority of the electorate will vote on in a GE. Right or wrong, that’s the fact of the matter. So all this “he knows what a woman is” rhetoric only serves to muddy the waters and serve this pathetic government, not women’s rights.

BitOutOfPractice · 02/02/2023 22:35

Hah, if you think the Tory party cares about women’s rights because of this statement you are living in cloud cuckoo land. They don’t.

Funnily enough I'm a single mum to kids and I haven't had my heating on for a week. I only put the water on when anyone needs a shower.

My mortgage has just gone up this month to an extra £700 a month. So I'm advertising for ANOTHER lodger. I will share a room with my daughter.

And am skinter than a fucking skint thing!

Been in bed since 8pm to keep warm but do you want what I'M FUCKING GLOWING INSIDE THAT HE SAID THAT!

Maybe the future will be safer for my daughter and granddaughters.

KohlaParasaurus · 02/02/2023 22:37

I think Sunak believes what he's saying, whatever his reason for saying it. He's just stating facts of which every intelligent adult is aware. I suspect Starmer believes what Sunak is saying too, but won't say it. Goodness only knows what the Greens and the Lib Dems believe.

We need allies who are in positions of power. We don't have to like them personally or approve of the entire package. I hope Sunak's words will be followed by action being taken at government level to give us our fucking stuff back.

mumda · 02/02/2023 22:38

He can say it again and again. Someone needs to say it loudly every day.

SilentHedges · 02/02/2023 22:38

Absolutely Rishi believes biological sex matters, every rational person with a grasp on reality knows this.

Does he care? He has a wife and two daughters, so I'd find it hard to believe he doesn't.

Well done to him for stating the bleeding obvious.

NowtSalamander · 02/02/2023 22:50

I love that he said it, endlessly hopeful that Starmer will agree.

I’m a bit worried though as Trump has also come out strongly anti GI today and I really really don’t want this to turn into a right vs left issue. It’s much less so here than in the states but we often end up copying their politics.

Is it too much to ask that ALL politicians realise that an ideology that sterilised children and puts rapists in women’s jails is pure batshit?!

This! As if he gives a shit, he's just going for culture war topic of the day to try and get votes.
Can't they just concentrate on things like what they're going to do about the cost of living, sorting out Brexit mess, investing in and helping the NHS , stuff like that?
Now that'd be more likely to get me voting.

Hilarious. What fools are the Labour Party for their continued avoidance of the issues and denial that it is a growing major concern. Not at the top of the list, but moving up and frankly easy to fix.

But yeah…we are the fools!

Fluffymule · 02/02/2023 22:58

Leaving aside personalities or political allegiances, I think it is very important that the British Prime Minister is stating this clearly and without hesitation or caveat.

Whether we like him or his government or not he is currently our most senior politician. What he says in a high profile interview makes headlines, it creates debate and holds weight.

lechiffre55 · 02/02/2023 23:02

Isn't everything a politician says for votes?
Isn't the point of politics to listen to what the people want and represent them?
If he's saying it for votes, then it's because he realises it's an important issue.
Isn't that what we want?
WTF is wrong with saome people?

Agree
I don’t know why Labour (and many on here) think it’s so great not to listen to women on this

JKRfan · 02/02/2023 23:05

Pleased he has said this and he is following Boris Johnson's lead over sports that 'biological sex matters'. He has added prisons too, so 'Keep Prisons Single Sex' will be pleased even though they could soon be out of a job?
I was getting a bit worried where Sunak stood, even though he did make the right noises about single sex spaces during both Tory Leadership elections. He does have 2 young daughters and I am sure he does care about them and their future.

I don't think the Education Secretary is particularly on board with the need to get 'gender identity ideology' out of schools but I will be glad to be proved wrong about this. Miriam Cates would be an outstanding choice for Education.
Douglas Ross (Scottish Tory Leader MSP and MP) standing up to Sturgeon is also great. It seems he has worked these issues out and managed to get most Tory MSPs believing in biological reality in stark contrast to the other parties in Scotland (SNP, Labour, LibDem and Green).
Fingers crossed Sunak follows Boris' lead on not including 'trans' in the Conversion Therapy Bill once he has been properly briefed. Perhaps Nikki Da Costa can have a word or Sunak could just ask his Mum or wife or Boris for a correct steer.
