I should imagine the clip will be doing the rounds on twitter shortly if it's not already, but their Scotland correspondant Ciaran Jenkins did a really good job in a brief interview with her when she was on a tour of a TV studio today. Raised the issue of Katie Dolatowski, and got her quite rattled trying to get her to justify her comments about transphobia and racism. Should be on about 8:15/8:20ish if you want to watch it on C4+1

I never thought I'd see the day when Alex Salmond was seen as a defender of Women's Rights, but here we are.

Just goes to demonstrate how big of a cock up this is for ‘Feminist to my Fingertips’ Nicola Sturgeon!

He's not though: he's a defender of Scottish Independence. Salmond himself is a pervy creep. Makes my skin crawl.

Agree with this. But the ‘women’s rights’ we are arguing for are also basic common sense/scientific reality. What is happening is the denial of reason, of science, the removal/distortion of language, censoring of debate. People with little interest in women’s right haven’t paid much attention to this but if they do they realise it is far bigger and more worrying than ‘just’ women’s rights. 1984 here we come.

Sugarfree23 · 08/02/2023 12:31

He's definitely a perv, and doesn't want to mistake a man for a woman 🫣

What do you mean 1984? I'm lost with that one.

midgemadgemodge · 08/02/2023 12:32

I suspect what we have with salmond is a person who sees women as both sex and gender items

So you can't change it - logical / aligned

But nevertheless he will apply gender concepts ( stereotypes ) to all women

Shelefttheweb · 08/02/2023 12:37

1984

George Orwell

”The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command”

Shelefttheweb · 08/02/2023 12:38

I recommend reading it.

scratchedbymycat · 08/02/2023 12:40

The idea of Salmond recasting himself as a champion of women's rights really bothers me. Same for Trump. The hypocrisy makes me want to throw up. Both are utterly creepy and vile. There's no way all those women were lying, and even Salmond's own lawyer acknowledged his awfulness in court. Sturgeon is no friend to women, but neither is Salmond. I'll never vote for SNP and I'll never vote Alba.

nilsmousehammer · 08/02/2023 12:44

Necessary made an excellent post on this a few days ago. To believe in women's rights is a normal, widespread, sane view and is going to contain a widely diverse group supporting it. Some of those will be those you may not politically agree with or think of as good people. But it's rather like the 'I dismiss vegetarianism because Hitler was a vegetarian' thing.

It is very, very necessary that well known voices speak common sense and rebut the never ending tide of bullshit, and that a widespread range of the electorate hear this.

nilsmousehammer · 08/02/2023 12:46

Not least, that it's helpful that many Scots voters who have been SNP supporters hear the voice of someone they may trust and voted for, speaking out against the current batshit of the SNP behaviour. Salmond is giving voice to 'independence should not equate goodbye reality and women's rights' and 'fgs wtf is this woman doing?'

scratchedbymycat · 08/02/2023 13:04

Of course what he's saying is useful, and it might even be effective. But it doesn't make him a champion of women's rights. He does not deserve that accolade.

He'll be all mealy-mouthed about women's rights but completely uncritical of himself rolling over for a "sleepy cuddle", more commonly called sexual abuse by the rest of us.

Just, No! I'll never forget. Disgusting slimeball creep.

A better correlation would probably be something along the lines of 'The fact Hitler was a vegetarian doesn't mean I believe he cares about sentient beings'.

I'm sure TRAs will make that point, and they won't be wrong either. I suspect Sturgeon is rolling her eyes too over his intervention.

I agree, he makes mine crawl too. My post was meant to be ironic/tongue-in-cheek/disingenuous sort of thing.

Mochudubh · 08/02/2023 13:16

And yes, Hitler was apparently fond of animals (though in some film footage you can see Goldie cringing when he goes to pet her) but it in no way mitigates the horrors of the Nazi regime.

scratchedbymycat · 08/02/2023 13:30

Unfortunately, I think there are some who re-write history to suit their current objective.

DH has a male friend who is a staunch pro-Indy type. The SNP could do no wrong and Nicola was a saint until the gender thing came up. He would argue against any criticism of the SNP and have an excuse for everything the SNP did. He has now switched to Alba. To deal with cognitive dissonance on Salmond, I've heard him talk about how everything Salmond went through was a plot against him, and the women who accused him were all liars etc. it makes me very cross.

FWIW, he's a Wings Over Scotland reader so I think he's led around by the nose. WOS dude is another one whose 'women's rights' credentials are a bit dubious, IMO. He can be quite a pugnacious bully and more than happy to massage a fact in the style of a conspiracy theorist. I know this from the Indy-ref. But his writings have been shared uncritically here. I would take anything written by him with a massive pinch of salt and a raised eyebrow.

Mine too - but there has never been any doubt that he knows what a woman is.

I've seen that footage - the dog was terrified of him.

Back to the recycling ♻️ conversation, I've just read on the BBC that it could be contraveining the UK Internal Market Act 2020.
Forcing manufacturers to put different labels on the same products and charging more money.
I guess if you don't put different bar codes on then you'll end up with some wise cracks rounding up van loads of bottles purchased without the deposit on them, bringing them to Scotland and claiming back the deposit money.
Another let's try and be different and failing miserably!
How on earth will any manufacturers be able to deal with that?

Boiledbeetle · 08/02/2023 16:19

So they really hadn't thought the recycling thing through then!

IcakethereforeIam · 08/02/2023 16:28

Re. the recycling, what's to any Scot who live near the border doing their shopping in England the making some cash by returning the empties in Scotland. This could be really good/bad new for businesses close to the Scotland/England border. Depending on which side you're on. I can see people opening businesses just over the border to take advantage of the discrepancy.

Sugarfree23 · 08/02/2023 16:36

That's why the manufacturers will need separate bar codes for Scotland and England, which means another bill to pay. And more hassle for anyone who moves stock around, can't easily move stuff from England to Scotland as it will have the wrong bar code.

Just another half though out idea.

FactsAreNotMean · 08/02/2023 16:52

Salmond is undoubtedly sleazy - I'm unconvinced about the more serious allegations tbh, I followed it quite closely at the time and a lot of it felt...off

But here's the thing; he might be sleazy, but he knows what a woman is. I'd rather deal with slimy toads like him or right wing men who can tend to be somewhat proprietorial over women than with obnoxious virtue signalling misogynistic pricks who want to see womanhood erased.

It's much harder to pick up the fights about male abuse or equal pay once we have ceased to exist as a category. So right now I'll work with anyone who will defend the existence of that category. I'm not interested in purity spirals, I don't need to align with them on anything else - as far as I'm concerned I welcome every single person who is willing to shout "the emperor is naked, and he's a MALE". We need as many people to hear this as possible, and there are people who will listen to Salmond, Farage and Trump who won't listen to the handful of more liberal political voices on our side.

justasking111 · 08/02/2023 16:53

Well in Wales we've been recycling bottles for years in special trolley bins collection weekly. So it's of no use to us

Sugarfree23 · 08/02/2023 16:58

In Scotland has been recycling with boxes and wheeliebins for years too. But somehow Nic seems to think this will up the percentage of recycling.
Reality its just a huge cost with probably very little benefit. If people can't be bothered to separate their rubbish at the house they aren't going to bother carting it back to the shops for a couple of £.

FactsAreNotMean · 08/02/2023 17:23

Recycling around here is a pain in the arse. Two wheelies, two boxes, food waste, and a weighted back which blows away if you so much as sneeze in its direction.

Kind of miss the ease of the old high rise chute! There might have been murders in the block and the car got keyed, but it was easy to get rid of stuff. We had a second bin room for bulky items so you didn't even have to arrange collections.
