Sturgeon getting an absolute grilling on Channel 4 News

I should imagine the clip will be doing the rounds on twitter shortly if it's not already, but their Scotland correspondant Ciaran Jenkins did a really good job in a brief interview with her when she was on a tour of a TV studio today. Raised the issue of Katie Dolatowski, and got her quite rattled trying to get her to justify her comments about transphobia and racism. Should be on about 8:15/8:20ish if you want to watch it on C4+1

There might have been murders in the block and the car got keyed, but it was easy to get rid of stuff

🤣🤣🤣

This thread has reminded me, it’s grey wheely tomorrow (fortnightly, general rubbish, smaller sized bin than the other 3) so thank fuck for Nicola’s career going down the rubbish chute or I might’ve forgotten.

Thanks, Nic, pet.

That's a fascinating insight. Thanks for enabling me to read it.

If I was a person who cared about fairness and the women in my family, I wouldn't vote for independence now. Sturgeon, and to a similar extent Drakeford in Wales, have demonstrated how undemocratic and unaccountable our governments are.

This is why I can't agree with abolition of the House of Lords. In principle I think abolition would be a good thing (unelected representatives); but when you look at the things they do, and the decisions they make, they are often a voice of sanity that puts the brakes on some of Westminster's craziest proposals. They are also, suprisingly perhaps, often champions of normal and vulnerable people.

spiderplantparty · 08/02/2023 17:47

I agree about the HoL. I think they do help to prevent the worst excesses of a government but worry about the lack of this in an independent Scotland.

Workerbeep · 08/02/2023 18:02

Yes I agree with @spiderplantparty and @DuesToTheDirt

Sure it’s not perfect but often members of the house of lords have had careers outside of politics Robert winston, Tammy Grey-Thompson

When slimeball Salmond is seen as a better bet by women than " feminist to my fingertips" Sturgeon, we are in a sad place in Scotland

Can't argue with that - but it's sadly true. She is a total lost cause

Sugarfree23 · 08/02/2023 20:50

@ShireWifeofNigelFarage
That is very concerning, and the secrecy from parents is disgusting.
I get many parents won't be happy with kids transitioning but parents need to know. Not to mention who takes the responsibility when these kids decide transitioning wasn't for them?

It's almost like the Anorexic issues of the 90s. But you wouldn't hold that back from parents.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 08/02/2023 20:57

I know a mum who found out her daughter’s school had changed her name and sex on the school register when she logged into parent payment account to top up up dinner money!

Not only are schools keeping secrets on the advice of trans lobby groups but the schools are too stupid/ill equipped to do it properly!

I came to the same realisation recently. I was previously very against the HOL on the basis that it's unelected but the issue of a lack of a second chamber here in Scotland has been made very stark recently. Someone I know also made the point that elected officials are often held to their Party whip and are interested in being re-elected so may not challenge the implementation of controversial issues/policies/legislation in the fear that it might affect their votes.

ShireWifeofNigelFarage · 08/02/2023 21:18

I agree. I think the HoL is very important and just needs a little tinker with to ensure that future lords are offered their spot on merit, which might be due to excellence in their professional field (like Robert Winston) but could also be chosen from the sorts of community campaigners who get other gongs. Make sure there are some plebs in there and it doesn’t get filled with aging showbizzers.

And take away their voting privileges if they don’t vote x times a year without a good excuse (eg serious illness), none of this Andrew Lloyd Webber turning up once in a blue moon claptrap.

They can keep the silly outfits and objects because it’s a connection with our past but if they insist on keeping anything hereditary they must do what the royals did and stop excluding eldest daughters.

Rainbowshit · 08/02/2023 22:09

Yes I have changed my mind on the HoL recently too. They have knocked back several things recently that I have been very relieved about.

A few tweaks are definitely necessary though.

Sugarfree23 · 09/02/2023 00:47

The HoL definitely has its place. I'm sure knowing that legislation needs to get past them means things are discussed more deeply, better thought out before it's even presented to them.

Scotland needs a change in voting system too, I think a single transferable vote would work better than the two votes we have now.

Emotionalsupportviper · 09/02/2023 08:03

The House of Lords (which I used to think was an anachronism) has been the only thing holding our unspeakable government back lately. Even if they just slow things up, or make sure legislation is properly drafted, they have protected us a damn sight more than our elected representatives of all parties.

True, but dirtbag boris "I dont know how many children i have" was the best option in England only a short while ago.

I'll fight to the end for women and girls and I still would have voted boris.

I really do believe if we lose this, we (women as a sex class) are finished. This impacts everything. Not only toilets, hospital wards, prisons and sports.

People who can take a long view and don’t have to worry about re-election (wrong as that sounds) bring invaluable perspective

MarshaBradyo · 09/02/2023 10:46

I only recently became engaged in HoL role - through the maternity act. They were excellent.

Compared to the rabble of HoC they were measured and reasonable. Plus it needs to be in the manifesto to get through easily, which we vote on.

It’s a good system I hope Starmer doesn’t do a lawyerly cost wasting exercise and abolish

Sugarfree23 · 09/02/2023 10:49

Boris may not know how many children he has, but we can give him credit for knowing what a woman is.

All of this is and the attitudes of some MPs towards children is making me feel I never want to vote for anyone who's only legacy in this world will be their career. MPs need to be invested in the future of the country.

Is this one still being trotted out? He may know what a woman is, but how has his knowing that done anything to help women? Women's lives have become demonstrably harder during 12 years of Tory government.

Tbf, Boris was only in charge for a quarter of that.

Sugarfree23 · 09/02/2023 12:41

I think everyone's life's have become harder under Tory Government but neither Labour, nor SNP seem to know what a woman is or why sex actually matters.

So as a politically homeless woman there is only one option. Sad but true!

We've never had a Tory government in Wales. Observed sturgeon bat shit policies and presumed Wales would learn from that but nope. The clue being their behaviour in Qatar which was a precursor to the absolute crap they've brought out this week. As Salmond said they've kicked half their voters to the kerb. Are women still so irrelevant to decision making

dunBle · 09/02/2023 15:36

What did they do in Qatar?
