Sturgeon getting an absolute grilling on Channel 4 News

I should imagine the clip will be doing the rounds on twitter shortly if it's not already, but their Scotland correspondant Ciaran Jenkins did a really good job in a brief interview with her when she was on a tour of a TV studio today. Raised the issue of Katie Dolatowski, and got her quite rattled trying to get her to justify her comments about transphobia and racism. Should be on about 8:15/8:20ish if you want to watch it on C4+1

I used to live in a 1920s built council flat that had one of those shoots that you chucked your rubbish down into one big bin below.

We once spent a happy half hour sending down some of those 1970s blown glass fish, wheeling the bin aside so we could take turns watching the multi coloured glass smash.

(don’t worry, we swept it all up!)

Oh my days, this reminds me of a time I was walking past a tower block. Gorgeous day, everyone's windows open and I heard an epic argument coming from one of the blocks.

It ended with the woman yelling very very angrily,
"Yer dinners down the chute"

Me and the person I was with nearly wet ourselves laughing, we used it every chance we got.

Huge derail or merail. Sorry not sorry

Alex Salmond clip. I'd love to have heard it all

Found it. AND he talks about single sex spaces

Now thats really funny 😁 😂
I grew up in a multi with a chute.

And yes I have wondered how they recycle in multis but I'll conclude they probably don't but are people going to carry bags of bottles back to the shops.

Another of Queen Nics policies that doesn't affect her, she'll have a minion to return her bottles.

I have 5 wheelie bins. Do I win?
<as you were>

Sugarfree23 · 07/02/2023 23:41

@justasking111 why does that clip remind me of Rab C 😂

Sugarfree23 · 07/02/2023 23:41

@ICouldHaveCheckedFirst
You've trumped me, I've only got 4.

Fascinating.

Do you think he can sense that the end is nigh for Nic’s political career?

Why? Where on earth do you stick them? Why? Ughhhhh.

Thanks Local Council once more. Puts empty coke can in the general rubbish bin.

I don't even have to put my solitary bin out out. They let themselves in the back and put it back in its usual spot when they are done.

Obviously my council tax bill is worth it just for the rubbish collection it seems!

Well I'm wondering if he's on Mumsnet now 😂😂. He's certainly struck a chord.

Everyone in Scotland can sense that.

Two comments in the Times today about NS:

Kenny Farquharson:
www.thetimes.co.uk/article/655e4584-a709-11ed-b9b7-9e487a0455d5?shareToken=5c77e3d1cf66669314bf75f17f854d2a

Alf Young:

Not a single one of the people who are usually very vocal in their support of NS have said anything about her recently on FB, even the woman I had a long and fairly heated discussion about this topic a few month ago and who was "very disappointed" in me.

ResisterRex · 08/02/2023 09:31

In the Kenny Farquharson article:

"In coming to conclusions she relied on little more than her own careful judgment and her lawyerly smarts."

Where are those "lawyerly smarts" now then?

Igneococcus · 08/02/2023 09:34

I've been wondering about that too. I just don't see it.

bignosebignose · 08/02/2023 09:41

The "careful judgment" seems to have gone walkabout too.

Do any of you ever think about how a trans woman would feel stumbling across your threads on here?

I know you all feel strongly about this but I feel genuinely sad at how the understandably emotive issue of trans women in prisons has whipped people up to a point where there's such glee in posts like this, and underneath it all is such a dismissive and negative view of all the trans women in our society and how they feel - which is often I would imagine desperately unseen, marginalised and discriminated against.

Calling a group the "trans women are women brigade" is so unkind to trans women everywhere who deserve to be recognised.

You see the “be kind” dog whistle has be outed as a code for “shut up” it no longer works. Be kind is only ever in one direction. Towards a small minority of men who want to take women’s voices and safety away and think putting in a dress and caking on makeup, carrying a pink suitcase and calling themselves Charlene gives them an unquestionable right to go so.

so let’s actually be kind (in its proper sense) to women and children who have a right to feel safe and not have this harmful ideology pushed on them

pattihews · 08/02/2023 10:55

That's a fascinating insight. Thanks for enabling me to read it.

If I was a person who cared about fairness and the women in my family, I wouldn't vote for independence now. Sturgeon, and to a similar extent Drakeford in Wales, have demonstrated how undemocratic and unaccountable our governments are.

OMG12 · 08/02/2023 11:04

Alex Salmond on LBC - this man has the lay of the land

: "Dedicated women's rights campaigners, who have fought to have single-sex spaces over a period of many years - it's a valued thing for them - are now supporting a Tory government at Westminster over their own parliament in Scotland - that must be a bad thing for Scottish independence."

"I think the legislation that is self-identification undermines the protection of single-sex spaces... if the First Minister now takes this to court and this becomes a dominating issue over a long period of time, if you choose to fight with Westminster on an area where you can't even defend your own position coherently, it will inevitably do great damage."

Mochudubh · 08/02/2023 11:08

I never thought I'd see the day when Alex Salmond was seen as a defender of Women's Rights, but here we are.

I too have 5 wheelie bins. 😁

Sugarfree23 · 08/02/2023 11:15

I wouldn't class him as a defender of womans rights more he really has clocked that any independence campaign needs the womans vote too.

I'd also guess he knows exactly what a woman is 🫣 he has no desire to get involved with any transwoman, if you know what I mean😬

Remember the women fought for that right too. I somehow think we'd have a heck of a lot less transwomen if it meant giving up your right to vote 🗳

Exactly. See also Donald Trump. What both those men are good at, though, is using issues to their own political advantage when it suits them.

Mochudubh · 08/02/2023 11:08

I never thought I'd see the day when Alex Salmond was seen as a defender of Women's Rights, but here we are.

I suspect he’s more a defender of reality and realised that women are being sacrificed to the gods of la la land and women (51%) of the voters are pissed off and are answering a 100 year old call to rebellion
