Dickhead mentality that doesn’t really work does it?

InterestingUsernameTBC · 13/01/2023 20:31

I think you only have to watch a music video or two to see that male and female artists are valued for different attributes.

Coolheadedbird

Ah well, perhaps you can come up with a reason why she won 'Best Solo Artist' four years running - prior to her releasing her solo album?

InterestingUsernameTBC · 13/01/2023 21:08

All this talk about it being pure coincidence that it's all male nominees this year is reminding me of the poor girl at school who thought that the chances of her falling off her bike on her way home was 50/50 because she either did or she didn't. She must have been quite surprised to keep arriving home still on her bike.

Rainbowshit · 13/01/2023 21:31

Owen Jones everyone 🙈🙄

Love the part where they pass the blame to record labels. While there certainly may be some sexism in record labels you know there were boundaries in place that helped females. You know like... Sex categories. 🤷🏻‍♀️ But it's too much trouble to look inward for help. Let's just pass the blame on why don't we...

Merryclaire · 13/01/2023 22:40

Can they seriously not find even one woman better than that utterly shite lineup?

I know I’m old and don’t ‘get’ modern music anymore but ‘best artist’? What a joke - best PR machine more like.

I can’t take the Brit awards seriously. But this exclusion of women is deeply troubling. That some women are taking it up on themselves to defend it is more troubling still.

Came on to post this.

"My view is gender neutral awards should reserve 50% of nominations for women.

Women represent a majority of the music industry workforce, so the Academy making the nominations should also be weighted to be at least 50% women, too."

There's an infuriating video of him explaining that people who don't understand what non-binary are are the same as people who didn't understand what 'gay' was. Nothing to do with the fact that no-one can define it in a non-circular way, of course!
And pretends to believe that women are oppressed in society.

Rainbowshit · 13/01/2023 21:31

Owen Jones explaining non binary identities and feminism.

Fucking purgatory.

SlowDog · 13/01/2023 23:14

So as far as I can see, before last year most of the categories were not split between men/women anyway, it was only best international artist and best British artist that had separate awards.

They didn't reduce the total number of awards either, in 2021 there were 11 awards total and in 2022 there were 15 (according to Wikipedia).

In 2021 (the last year when there were any separate male/female awards), 7 awards were won by women and 4 by men.

In 2022 (the first time that there were no separate male/female categories), 9 awards were won by women and 5 by men. The other was won by a mixed but female-fronted band (Wolf Alice).

I am not sure that suggests that there is a bias against female artists (or that female artists are not likely to win awards that don't have male/female split) it would obviously be very disappointing if from now on there is a pattern of fewer female nominees and winners.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/01/2023 23:24

The person who responded to OJ's 'Non-binary people, like Emma Corrin and Sam Smith, exist. They're never going to accept being in a men or women's category.' with

'Then why not just revert to male and female categories?' was of course right. They're sexed, not 'gendered' categories. People with a nonbinary gender identity still have a sex, you're literally erasing them if you deny this. If enbies don't want to accept an award in a category to which they unequivocally do belong, frankly that's their problem.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 14/01/2023 01:17

I hope someone feels brave on the night and does a Jarvis style protest

Rainbowshit · 13/01/2023 21:31

Or, and here's a revolutionary thought, you could have say a ummm women's category. So that 50% of the prizes went to women. Why has no one thought of this? Hmm

I have often said that all this could be completely sorted out with a 'freestyle' category like in swimming. We say freestyle and you can win with butterfly or backstroke but no one ever does. Have a women's category and a 'freestyle category. Men, TW, TM, NB, all the other 17 genders can compete. I mean you know a man will win but it's FREESTYLE. And then a woman can win the women's. Lovely.

midgetastic · 14/01/2023 09:15

The trouble with an open and women categories is that I suspect it entrenches sexism more than male and female categories because the open is open to women - but it turns into a male default and the women's is a special class for others who could never cut the mustard

Whereas male of any gender and female of any gender are at least equal categories

Birdsweepsin · 14/01/2023 09:24

Oo Laura Kuennsberg....

ArabellaScott · 14/01/2023 09:32

Ruh roh. They is bein transphobias all over the place.

If only Kim Petras and Sam Smith had been nominated in the category, all would have been totally fine, of course and women could relax knowing that their life experiences were being properly represented.

But then no one's signalled that tiny minorities of people choosing special labels very definitely exist and can be whatever they want to be whether they actually are or not. And there may exist categories that male people (of any and all identity choices) can't have, so that they can't have all of everything and that may make them feel unloved.

It's all very tricky. Really the answer is to just exclude bloody female people altogether (the ones who have been too stupid to identify out of being the scum class into something more interesting ffs) and solve the whole negative publicity dogwhistle somethingnormativity definitelypatriarchal extreme right wingy old white.... thing.

zanahoria · 14/01/2023 10:01

"My view is gender neutral awards should reserve 50% of nominations for women"

so they can stand in the background looking pretty and clapping the bloke who picks up the award?

nilsmousehammer · 14/01/2023 10:05

The validation cheerleading squad proving that the best sort of woman isn't a female one.

I do find it entertaining when the NB stuff inevitably runs up against reality and the narrative moves to wanting NB categories but a female and a male one (as otherwise biologically male people dominate everything).

Abhannmor · 14/01/2023 10:09

So Jonesy is a Terf. Some of the mob will have to go without a pitchfork , I'd say. There just aren't enough in the world what with the war and Brexit.

Or perhaps there's different rules for him?

Signalbox · 14/01/2023 10:24

Presumably when OJ says 50% of the nominations should be reserved for women he means women + men who call themselves women. So in reality he wants 50% of a unisex category to be reserved for both women and men. Makes perfect logical sense.

nilsmousehammer · 14/01/2023 10:39

I'm sure he would be perfectly happy with a women's category won by 100% biological males, yes. So long as they all identified as women.

Lunacy on toast, sometimes I type these posts thinking what madness have I just tried to put into plain English.

Front page BBC website, featured large!

'Out of the 70 stars who were eligible to be nominated for the prize, just 12 were female.'

I'm sure that's pure chance, too, Lorraine, eh?

All 5 Brit nominees for Artist of the year (Gener neutral) are……..
ArabellaScott · 14/01/2023 10:48

That's the ratio.

I look forward to seeing women once again erased from art, music, literature, film and every other field of human endeavour as 'gender neutral' progressive utopias are realised.
