This year they are - but which female artists have been better this year?

Where is the bias then that's effected my daughters choices? They listen to and download the music they like. They are not swayed by anything other than their own choices and tastes. How do download sites ensure that my daughters have only download Ezra & Styles then?

ResisterRex · 13/01/2023 16:42

Gender neutral = male default setting. It's what happens when you erase sex. If it is acceptable here, it will spread. Women will be erased and become invisible.

Fight back.

Here is the petition to update the Equality Act to make sure that sex means biological sex.

I remembered the days people could use Brit Nominee as an accolade. Seems like a whole group of women are missing out on just that this year, not just the possibility of winning!

It's just so sad that it has come to this. I'd have more respect for Sam 'I'm a woman due to my moobs' Smith if he'd have full on insisted he should be in the female category and then it opened the debate up further rather than insisting he's neither and sex based categories shouldn't exist.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2023 16:44

@Felix125 I think their limited musical tastes ensure that - I mean Harry Styles! The most interesting thing about him is his taste in blouses.

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 16:48

What ever he is doing - he seems to be popular with a lot of people.
He is also up for best album, best pop act & best song - so he must be doing something right.

puffyisgood · 13/01/2023 16:50

'best British female solo artist' wasn't always the strongest category, Annie Lennox winning it 4 times before having released a debut album speaks to that, but in a way that hints at how important the award was, to encourage talent

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/01/2023 16:55

I'm weirdly pleased that women have been excluded because it proves the point we've been trying to make all along. Obviously I'd prefer equality but until that actually occurs, this kind of thing highlights the very reason why separate sexed categories are a good idea.

Yes, not only does it prove the how quickly women would be completely overlooked (barely waiting 2 years) it demonstrates their low opinion of female artists and also that the female population as a whole, who they assumed would have too short an attention span to notice.

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 16:56

That's because Annie Lennox had a lot of her early success when she was with the Eurthymics. Sweet Dreams Album was released in 1983

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2023 17:01

Oh - Annie Lennox was in the Eurthymics - well I never! You learn something new every day. 🙄

Bias exists everywhere - I guess it's so all pervasive it can be hard to spot !

But statistics is your friend - and statistically getting 5 males if there is no bias towards males is ...unlikely ( 3 in a hundred years ? ?)

Who gets a contract- that's a whole host of bias which is well understood
Who is promoted by the radio/ algorithms - more bias
Who it's cool to be seen to like - societal bias
Who actually applies for a music career - even there boys get an easier ride as they are more likely to get away with taking the time to practise a hobby
I am sure there are more

Thanks for the opportunity to explain things to people who are thinking about this !

SinisterBumFacedCat · 13/01/2023 17:04

So if we are going by what preteen daughters like alone, it’s a shame that the Best Groups has not reflected that in the past 30 years, otherwise the Spice Girls, All Saints, Sugababes, Girls Aloud would have raked it in over traditional male rock bands like Coldplay and Oasis.

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/01/2023 17:10

ExiledElsie · 12/01/2023 19:40

It's possible it's pure chance that it's five men this year, and it might be five women next year or the year after.

Yes, it was pure chance. Absolutely. Just as likely it will be 5 women next year. 😂

What's that quote by the notorious RBG?

That she would be happy when the Supreme Court was 100% female. True equality. Which will, for clarity NEVER FUCKING HAPPEN.

I mean come on.

The idea that we’re only swayed by our own tastes and choices isn’t entirely true. We’re likely to have new music targeted at us according to age, sex, previous purchases. This is particularly relevant for teenage girls, who will be often be very keen on artists with a large fan base of teenage girls.

Again, it is not ‘which female artists have been better than the top two male artists?’ It’s ‘were all five on that nomination list better than every single female UK artist who released an album during the qualifying date?’

I’ve been looking through the various 2022 lists and I honestly can’t find any other which has the top five as male artists only. Album sales, single sales, total income, music critics, none have five male artists in the top five.

If you could find me a list that isn’t the BRIT nominations and link to it, that would be interesting.

lifeturnsonadime · 13/01/2023 17:16

I don't get all of this arguing over whether the best 5 artists are men or not. I mean it seems unlikely BUT this was so avoidable if they'd just kept the original categories.

Surely you aren't saying that this is better than having best male best female Felix ?

Women will never fare well in single sex categories what ever the discipline. Even where they exist men still tend to win them merely on declaration of being trans.

Musomama1 · 13/01/2023 17:23

Maybe they'll just do an all female nomination list next year

Oh if only there was a way to represent both groups...'scratches head'.

And if that happens - would there a discussion like this saying there should be at least one male nominee?

I don't believe most women would want an all-female list of nominations because actually we just want the best singers. Not to score points or "get one over" on men.

I sincerely doubt whether an all-female or an all-male list really does offer the best balance, or represent truly the best talent that's out there.

It sounds as if you're suggesting that women wouldn't care if men are frozen out, and because of that, fuck female artists.

Had a look after a poster highlighted the wisdom of Lorraine Kelly this morning. Here is part of the interview :

Wee Lorraine: ‘There's a lot of hoo-ha about the nominees all being chaps, but it is what it is.'
‘We do have a lot of amazing women as well in the other categories, but it doesn't matter whether it's he, she, it, they. If it's best artist, it's best artist.’

Manly George Ezra replied: 'Exactly you've hit the nail on the head. I hadn't looked through the other artists until this morning, because people had been talking about the nominations thing'
'If you look through the artists in all of the categories, it's amazing, it's eclectic'.
'I don't know, I don't have the answer but I do think on the whole they've done a great job of recognising.'

So I don’t know why you ladies are all causing all this trouble when you should be very grateful that there are women in the other categories at all!!!! 😂

Are there any categories this year that are solely woman only nominations? And on a parity with Best Artist?

No I thought not.

Seriously what will make Lorraine Kelly break? Anything?

Tigger7654 · 13/01/2023 11:47

Did you hear Lorraine this morning, 'it's not sexisr it's just that the best artists were men so it's only fair they all win' 🤮

I happened to hear that too. Another woman denying that women are getting fucked over. Fuck off Lorraine

MrsTerryPratchett · 13/01/2023 17:49

Fuck off Lorraine

Her schtick got very old a while ago. All the lilting cute voice saccharine sweet bullshit really doesn't fly when it's internalised misogyny.

Rainbowshit · 13/01/2023 18:06

It's good in a way that this has happened. Perhaps remind the women that have forgotten why the sex categories existed in the first place and illustrate to the newer generations that there is still some way to go in terms of equality.

Anyone wondering how the female artists being told not one was good enough to be in the Best Artist category?

If none of those male artists could be left out then the category is too small.

Oh - Annie Lennox was in the Eurthymics - well I never! You learn something new every day.

Well that's why she had success prior to the album Diva

@Felix125 can you genuinely not spot the sarcasm in this post? Do you really think that most women posting here might not know that Annie Lennox was in the Eurythmics?

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 20:29

My point is that she had success with the group prior to her releasing the solo album Diva. This is why she won an award 4 years on the bounce prior to her solo career album release.
