@Felix125 Little Simz won the Mercury Music prize.

So which sites are more 'male' orientated then for downloading music?

And the sites that aren't - how are they influencing my daughters to listen to Ezra & Styles?

Could you possibly move on from Ezra and Styles? I’m beginning to think you fancy them.

There are three other nominees…

Anactor

Sorry - it was a question to RoseslnTheHospital based on my daughters liking Ezra & Styles this year

@Felix125 Little Simz won the Mercury Music prize.

Yes - but her album wasn't as successful or her singles.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2023 15:30

Little Simz and Self Esteem both have high charted releases (4 in the case of Little Simz and 11 in the case of Self Esteem) and were nominated for/won awards. They are not less successful than Fred Again by your metrics.

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2023 15:31

@Felix125

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Simz

highest UK chart position 4

highest UK chart position 4

Had a look after a poster highlighted the wisdom of Lorraine Kelly this morning. Here is part of the interview :

Wee Lorraine: ‘There's a lot of hoo-ha about the nominees all being chaps, but it is what it is.'
‘We do have a lot of amazing women as well in the other categories, but it doesn't matter whether it's he, she, it, they. If it's best artist, it's best artist.’

Manly George Ezra replied: 'Exactly you've hit the nail on the head. I hadn't looked through the other artists until this morning, because people had been talking about the nominations thing'
'If you look through the artists in all of the categories, it's amazing, it's eclectic'.
'I don't know, I don't have the answer but I do think on the whole they've done a great job of recognising.'

So I don’t know why you ladies are all causing all this trouble when you should be very grateful that there are women in the other categories at all!!!! 😂

midgetastic · 13/01/2023 15:32

If it was purely charts then it's pure algorithm and nominations are irrelevant

But it's not - it's value judgements

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 15:35

Ginmonkeyagain

but not as successful in 2022 as Fred Again

RoseslnTheHospital · 13/01/2023 15:38

Felix. What your sprogs download off Spotify is not a metric for measuring how music companies spend their A&R, promotion and marketing funds.

We are discussing sexism on a feminist chat board, you'd think it was pretty darn obvious that any questions would be within that context.

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 15:41

So how do you think its spent in a sexist way then?

RoseslnTheHospital · 13/01/2023 15:41

I'm asking you if you think that's a possibility...

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 15:43

From what I have seen - no.

Where is your evidence to suggest it is?

ArabellaScott · 13/01/2023 15:49

Yes, Felix, sexism exists.

unbias.co/gender-bias-in-the-music-industry/

'The fact that 65% of songs have male vocals underlines the biased mindset of the industry’s gatekeepers (whether they are aware of this bias or not), the people who decide which songs have a shot to go mainstream. Our data shows that these gatekeepers have put women at a disadvantage.'

Specifically relating to Spotify, in fact. According to that article/research, playlists are apparently favouring female artists. So why aren't the Brit Awards reflecting that?

fatsocatso · 13/01/2023 15:49

I just saw this on the news and came straight to Mumsnet to find a thread on it. I have nothing more useful or eloquent to say that hasn't already been said better than I could. So instead I'd just like to share my massive fucking rage 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

RoseslnTheHospital · 13/01/2023 15:53

Felix, unless you've done some research or have music industry knowledge why would you have seen any sexism from your pov as a consumer who isn't aware of sexism?

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 15:53

ArabellaScott
Because its nit just Spotify its judged on. There are other download sites and it looks at sales and tours etc etc

i know it exists - I am asking where is it specifically with A&R?

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 16:09

RoseslnTheHospital

Because i haven't seen any.
If you're saying its there - you have to demonstrate this in your argument.

StalkedByASpider · 13/01/2023 16:25

I guess the question is, can we imagine a year when every single slot in the Best Artist category is taken up by women, despite some male artists having huge chart success?

For me, the answer is no. Even if women were dominant, I doubt very much that they would put forward a list of nominations without any representation from men at all.

I'm weirdly pleased that women have been excluded because it proves the point we've been trying to make all along. Obviously I'd prefer equality but until that actually occurs, this kind of thing highlights the very reason why separate sexed categories are a good idea.

Felix125 · 13/01/2023 16:27

StalkedByASpider

And if that happens - would there a discussion like this saying there should be at least one male nominee?

midgetastic · 13/01/2023 16:29

Felix

If there is no bias why do you think we see the stats we see , the prizes handed out like we see?

Do you actually believe men are better at music than women ?

Sure there would. If we celebrated it, you'd soon be along to police-splain what we're Doing Wrong!

Define better.

midgetastic · 13/01/2023 16:34

Better to the extent that all the short listed winners are male

Ginmonkeyagain · 13/01/2023 16:40

As an aside I had only vaguely heard of Fred Again and today's googling reveals he is Massively Posh.

Fred Again, also known as Fred John Philip Gibson, was born in Balham, South London on 19 July 1993.[7]
He is the son of King's Counsel barrister Charles Anthony Warneford Gibson and Mary Ann Frances Morgan, members of the British peerage. He is the great grandson of aristocrat and financier Shane O'Neill, 3rd Baron O'Neill and British socialite Ann Fleming (who later went on to marry James Bond creator Ian Fleming).
He is the godson of British musician Brian Eno.
He attended the independent boarding school Marlborough College in Marlborough, Wiltshire, England between 2006 and 2011.[8][9]
