I have 100% admiration for this brave, peaceful, pro-woman protest which has brought attention to this issue way beyond what a simple heckle or placard would have done.
If the Scottish government will not respect the rights of women then they have no decency.
If they will not be decent, women will not be decent.

When I read about this on the debate thread, I assumed it was a transgender person doing it in triumph, and have only found out from this thread that this was not the case. Am disappointed at this behaviour and think it is inappropriate and counter-productive.

Quite unbelievable that a massive mirkin stuck on flesh coloured tights is being compared to transwomen rubbing and shaking their "tits" at women who gathered to speak.

Can't believe people were saying she 'flashed her genitals'? What genitals? It's a merkin sewn over the top of a pair of tights!

I have to say, I'm not sure about this move either, only because it gives the TRAs so much ammo and doesn't give the best impression to the person on the street who is only just becoming aware of that video.

Ha ha ha) I’m a bit unwell and a bit fed up so not terribly animated.

A “call to arms” needs a bit of background so this an hour long summary of my “Lived Experience” of engaging in the political process in Scotland while being a female woman.

I can do comedy, guess it’s tragedy’s turn.

While you wait for a demo of my vision of the “Wench Resistance” have a rummage and see if you can find the following:

Opaque skin coloured tights or leggings

basic craft supplies, printer

basic craft skills with knitting/sewing/glueing/stapling

a loose fitting skirt or kilt

Camera, video and a background at home or outside.

With friends or alone.

Anonymous with your head out of shot, with an app disguising you digitally, wearing a mask or with everything proudly hanging out.

A wrapped Christmas present with a label of which rights or things are being stolen from you.

Imagination, or an ability to google “merkin”

I did make a FB page yesterday - search for “Kate O’Shanter” ideas are on there.

I think I messed it up, it’s a public page so if you are stealth don’t “join” or “like” it, I’ll try and sort the settings and put it somewhere more safe.

My only rule is that we come up with new ideas and original hashtags.

Don’t use anything associated with established groups without permission - women have worked hard to build working relationships and resources and they are often fragile.

The aim of #TheWenchResistance is to add to the discourse, not add to women’s workload.

I was unsure about it at first but that was mainly because I first heard about it on Twitter from (The Icky) Monty & co trying to take the moral high ground about public nudity despite the fact they all knew it was a merkin.

However I totally agree with PP that a quiet peaceful protest would have been ignored and indeed it was, as one SMP was saying ‘women aren’t even watching’ wasn’t he?

So in short, I now think it was a brilliant protest and bloody well done to her!

The women around her thought they were in a safe space, that clearly made them feel very unsafe and uncomfortable. If you hurt women in your goal to protect women, you’re not part of any solutions.

Are we looking at the same pictures? They seem entirely unbothered!

Let me just understand though according to the Q's rules:

I am a bit confused with everyone saying she showed her genitals though. Even if it wasn’t a merkin, is pubic hair classed as genitals?

When standing up like that, penis wouldnt be hidden under pubic hair, so a man would easily flash in that position, but a vulva can’t be seen, therefore is it still classed as flashing? It’s not like she lifted one leg up to give us all a good gawp is it?

People surely can’t be so daft as to lump in this woman’s beautifully ironic non-violent protest with:

-men pissing in bottles which presumably involved public male indecent exposure by those of them who didn’t prepare their piss in advance.. and then leaving their piss outside public buildings for the staff to clear up… can they?
Or to compare it to men aggressively threatening women who were speaking about male violence and oppression with male violence -while jiggling their ‘tits’ at them… ?

This one-woman protest is in the same vein as Man Fridays (but even more impressive in their bravery if that were even possible, because it’s just one woman doing it all alone).

The whole fucking point is that this protestor with her tights and merkin remained throughout completely ‘decent’ despite her claim to indecency- unlike the anti woman actions of the Scottish parliament. And unlike the prospects of safety for any woman trapped in a prison with men. That amounts to subhuman treatment of women on a mass scale sanctioned by the Scottish Parliament. What decent person would not be outraged by that?

Peaceful, non-threatening, inventive, attention-grabbing pro-woman protest is effective and fabulous. That solo woman speaking up completely from the heart (with no support of a women’s group behind her) deserves a medal for her bravery not to mention her campaigning strategy chops*. I’m cheering her on!

(*including that incredibly respectful and responsible caveat listed unthread from her SM posting beforehand, reminding people NOT to link to link their protest to women’s groups without the group’s permission)

This was a fantastic protest.

Let's remember what happened when JK Rowling wrote two reasonable, polite, moderately-argued essays expressing concerns about self-ID. She was deluged with rape and death threats and accused of being responsible for the suicides and murders of trans people.

So, if being reasonable and polite gets you accused of being a murderer, why not do something genuinely outrageous? Elaine's protest has made the front pages of many newspapers. It's mentioned in all the news reports. It's got people talking on social media. As a visual statement, it grabs the attention like nothing else - and I have no doubt the picture will be memed and the protest imitated in the months and years to come.

As for the pearl-clutching, spare me the sanctimony. This was a home-made outsize merkin, worn over a pair of tights. Admittedly it was hilarious to see so many men thinking it was Elaine's real minge - presumably because they are so addled by porn that they don't know what a woman's natural pudendum looks like.

The fact that the usual misogynists on Twitter are pretending to be horrified by a merkin - while applauding the person who exposed his penis on live television - serves to highlight the rank hypocrisy at the heart of this movement. They think that any man should be allowed into a female changing room, and if a little girl is upset by the sight of male genitalia, her mum should teach her to "look away". But a woman wearing an outsize wig of fake pubic hair? That is traumatising, supposedly. Well, my message to them is: fuck off to the far side of fuck, and when you get there, fuck off some more.

100% and great post RoyalCorgi I couldn’t agree more. It has really shocked me that so many men and women are so sexist, ageist and generally misogynistic in their disgusted assumptions about what normal adult women must have under their skirts!
