@GussetGripper

Do take a bow! (At least, I really think this is you?!)

She's amazing, isn't she? I love her.

It is indeed. The audio which accompanies it is fantastic, she is furious. I think her statement which preceded the skirt lifting was, "if you can't be decent I'm going to be indecent".

EM if you happen to be reading you were amazing, thank you for your courage.

PolkaDotMankini · 22/12/2022 20:21

Haha fabulous! Women won't wheesht.

pattihews · 22/12/2022 20:28

Elaine, you were amazing. Shame on the women who sat silently around you and did nothing.

I think some of you are a bunch of hypocrites when there were children there. I think Janey Godley tweets sums it up for me honestly ….
Gender critical WomenWontWeesht are upset about the thought of trans women near them so they protested at Scottish parliament by flashing her fake fanny to prove her point about safety. I hope she gets a taxi home ok tonight and stays safe.
#WomenWontWeesht “we think trans women have fake genitals and they are a danger to kids”.

Also #WomenWontWeesht “I have worn a fake vagina to flash at the public gallery to prove the SNP are monsters for the GRA in the Scottish parliament”

SD1978 · 22/12/2022 20:47

I was disappointed by this. I understand the anger, absolutely. But how many times has it been commented on how aggressive it is when trans women get their 'tits' out in order to try and intimidate. I see this as no different. It lessens the argument for me, and I am so, so disappointed in the Scottish government for slavishly allowing this disgusting bill to pass

aseriesofstillimages · 22/12/2022 21:00

What happened to the importance of privacy and dignity?

Oh stop it, she is completely covered. It's a merkin fastened to a pair of tights.
The action has historical significance.

Here is a painting called The Persian Women by Otto van Veen

"This painting depicting a scene from Plutarch’s Brave Women (Moralia 246A-B), is generally regarded as a companion of Otto van Veen’s Amazons and Scythians; Persian Women depicts them raising their skirts to mock their menfolk fleeing a battlefield: “Whither are you rushing so fast, you biggest cowards in the whole world? Surely you cannot, in your flight, slink in here whence you came forth.” Thus shamed, the men stop to face the enemy once more, and win a crushing victory."

It's also reminiscent of the Sheela na Gig
www.theguardian.com/world/2021/mar/08/big-vagina-energy-the-return-of-the-sheela-na-gig

Well done Elaine. I absolutely sobbed watching that.
You display the utter fury that we all felt at today's decision.

Genvonklinkerhoffen · 22/12/2022 21:07

Weird that some of you can't see this as modern day suffrage, above hoiking your bosoms and judging a woman for standing up for you, your daughters, and the rights you don't seem to appreciate.

Is killing yourself by running under a horse, "feminine"? I wouldn't say so. Did it achieve an aim?

@ofwarren Kurdish women do this too, utter bravery in the face of breathtaking violence, they do this to humiliate the men who think they hold power.

Completely agree. I can't help but think it's a complete own goal that makes the opposition "side" appear ridiculous and unhinged.

It's also in really very bad taste to flash, even if it's a fake merkin. You can claim it's got "historical signficance" (lol, really?) all you want but as protests go, all people will see when this is reported is a middle age woman lifting her skirt and shouting. It conveys nothing and destroys credibility, and I really wish she hadn't done it.

What happened to the importance of privacy and dignity?

I assume this question is aimed at NS and the SNP for allowing men the opportunity to access women's spaces, hence removing their privacy and dignity.

Yes, I quite agree.

ofwarren · 22/12/2022 21:13

@toffeeforeveryone
lol, really?
Yes really
As the poster after me said, Kurdish women have done it too.
It is a protest, and a fucking great one.

What's her age got to do with it anyway?

sanluca · 22/12/2022 21:16

I am in doubt about this. I don't think the general public is aware of the painting and history, I know I wasn't, so thank you for the explanation. I have seen this occurence being used in the media to paint women protesting the bill as hysterical idiots and it will be used to further mock, belittle and ignore us.

But then this comes from a group that will belittle, mock and ignore us anyway, no action will actually make them consider our points. So not sure harm is done and hopefully people will read the articles and go wtf

The reaction of some also shows the higher standards they have for women as opposed to men. Woman flashing clothes: bad, men and transwomen flashing their manboobs and committing actual violence: women shouldn't have been protesting. Showing again no one believes transwoman are not men, otherwise they would be held to that higher purity spiral reserved for women.

Oh come off it. I highly doubt anyone who is not already fully on board and sympathetic with the anti self-ID side of the argument is going to look at this and think "ah, political protest in the style of the ancient Persians". They are going to think "mad old bat" and disregard whatever she, and we, are saying.

To be clear - I really like Elaine Miller, but I think this is a real mis-step.

OmiOmy · 22/12/2022 21:25

I didn't know about the Kurdish women. Thanks.

She raised awareness - even if people are like WTF at her antics, they will know more about what's going on.

CremeEggsForBreakfast · 22/12/2022 21:27

It's definitely got people talking. I heard about it first on Radio 4.

I take the point about "stooping to their level" but a quiet, dignified protest would have been ignored at best and, at worst, TRAs would have been all over it.

Women need to be loud. They need to raise questions that the whole nation should be talking about. They need to to grab people's attention and have them googling why they felt the need to "flash". It's not time for dignity (as it pertains to not looking silly). It's time to be angry and to show it.

EndlessTea · 22/12/2022 21:28

That video gave me goosebumps

Dionysiana · 22/12/2022 21:34

I thought she was (and is) bloody marvellous.

MishyJDI · 22/12/2022 21:45

I'm not sure that person is a hero. Public nudity is just crude IMHO. And surely a post op transwoman could do the same. So not clear on what the point actually is.

There is no nudity at all in that clip.

Thelnebriati · 22/12/2022 21:51

She wasn't nude. If you were more aware of women's history maybe you'd know what a merkin is, or be aware the gesture is an insult.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 22/12/2022 21:51

Well said, Elaine.
