This is an experimental thread, all input much appreciated!

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Right, bring on the flames or flowers! <cowers>

I didn't see your posts MissLawls but if you email MNHQ ([email protected]) they usually will explain what it was that prompted the deletion.

Thanks @BoreOfWhabylon but at the risk of sounding like a creep I won't bother them this close to Christmas!

I agree with you about stoicism and am exasperated at the celebration of vulnerability. It even bleeds into music with plaintive wavery-quavery, cracking with "emotion", high-pitched voices, both male and female, constantly assailing the ears.

Agree entirely! Learning to cope is an essential life lesson. Being able to cope with adversity is a great skill to have. I wish that was celebrated and promoted instead of the very opposite! Yes it's okay to be vulnerable, to be unable to cope sometimes. But life is difficult and we have to be able to cope.

There is a whole cohort of people who seem to enjoy wallowing in helplessness.

Yes I've noticed that. I'm all for the very opposite - stoicism. It's a branch of philosophy but also a good way to try to live in my opinion.

Here's a thread you might like!:

‘Inclusivity’ is whatever people who shout the loudest deem important at a given time. I’m sick of the word.

Yes! Exactly that.

MissLawls · 19/12/2022 13:44

Thank you @DameMaud I shall take a look.

Kucingsparkles · 19/12/2022 19:53

This thread is amazing reading. Highly recommend.

Thanks for flagging that up, @Kucingsparkles - I'm only about half way through, and already that thread is astonishing.

So very glad I headed for Mumsnet!

Britinme · 19/12/2022 21:29

Yes thanks - just worked my way through that thread. I think I love Reem Alsalem.

Nepalese mountains guides? As in S h r a Tenzing Norgay? Why on earth not?

I'm not 100% sure if that one gets deleted, it's the hilltop word (especially as a verb) which apparently upsets some tender souls.

CyanCyan · 20/12/2022 00:29

Is it the one that begins with P?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2022 00:36

Yes.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/12/2022 07:12

I understand that bit, I'm utterly baffled by Sherpa being even a possible problem. Does it have a meaning I'm unaware of?

I wasn't aware of that being a problem! Perhaps in the sense of a companion assisting one in climbing the mountain??

I'm not 100% sure about Sherpa alone tbh - it's 'peak' which is apparently upsetting to sensitive folk (it used to be used a lot, often by former lurkers describing what had enlightened them) and there may have been instances of someone inadvertently making the GC case being referred to them as a Sherpa. As you say, someone who has got you to the top of a hill.

SqueakyDinosaur · 20/12/2022 09:44

I'm intrigued by p**k being taboo. Surely it's just useful shorthand for "this is the thing that I saw/read/experienced that made me really question myself about this issue, and has resulted in my view/belief actually changing" ?

ErrolTheDragon · 20/12/2022 09:47

Yes - it used to be very common, then rather abruptly started incurring unexpected deletions. There were mystified threads at the time, I've forgotten exactly what the rationale was. Maybe to do with making people on the other side of the 'debate' feel unwelcome.

Kucingsparkles · 20/12/2022 09:58

@BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn have you seen this amazing biological news?

I think it was that the word was combined with trans which can then be seen as a dismissive shorthand towards a group of people.

Basically anything is banned on this bit of the site that starts to be used as a trope that could be seen as othering a group.

It forces us to use polite clear language for all our arguments which is ultimately a good thing as we tease out all the nuances of our arguments.

IcakethereforeIam · 20/12/2022 10:14

Is 'stnning & brve' still banned?

MissLawls · 20/12/2022 11:34

Hmmmm... so I can't actually say which District I live in close to the first ever national park set up in the UK!? In 1951? You'll just have to guess!

IReallyLikeCrows · 20/12/2022 12:03

I went to that district last year and fell in love with it. One of my small joys was that the tap water was Buxton spring water. It was just the best tap water ever and I couldn't stop drinking it!

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 20/12/2022 12:15

That Tweet seems to have gone AWOL for some reason, Kuc, but I did see it before and was highly entertained (in the 'I despair of humanity' sense).

SinnerBoy · 20/12/2022 12:41

The Pique District?

MissLawls · 20/12/2022 16:13

The Pique District?

Heh. The very same @SinnerBoy

Lovely to hear that @IReallyLikeCrows I adore Buxton. It's just up the road from us.

I have a fondness for Matlock Bath.
