This is an experimental thread, all input much appreciated!

There is so much excellent information and so many active discussions on FWR that I wondered if it would be useful to have a thread to sort of "cross-fertilise" between them - airing little thoughts or vignettes that wouldn't themselves merit their own thread, to highlight other posts/threads of particular interest or to point to notable developments on fast-moving threads so that casual observers know where to look.

(For example, "the X thread has meandered onto a fascinating discussion of Y" or "Poster P's amazing analysis on thread Z might have relevance to the scenario in thread W" or even "Random bloke asked me to smile while I was choosing onions, grr"- that sort of thing).

Right, bring on the flames or flowers! <cowers>

I haven’t been to that district for years, but my Dad was from Burton on Trent so lots of outings to Dovedale/Thorpe Cloud, Matlock and the Heights of Abraham when we stayed with my grandparents as children. Would like to go back as an adult.

SinnerBoy · 20/12/2022 16:29

I had thought that Snowdonia had been the first NP. I consider myself now educated.

Tricyrtis2022 · 20/12/2022 16:38

The Pique District?

That made me laugh!

My family come from The Lakes. Lovely place.

SinnerBoy · 20/12/2022 16:45

Gladdened to have raised a smile. I think that's what I'll call my daughter's bedroom...

WarOnWoman · 20/12/2022 16:56

Popping up to say I'm thinking about starting my annual thread but feel discouraged with all the shit recently around here. @ErrolTheDragon you don't fancy it do you?

IReallyLikeCrows · 20/12/2022 19:04

@MissLawls we were staying in a village nearby. It was all a bit lovely.

I listened to Caroline Flack's mother on LBC phoning to talk about Clarkson and his vile article and the similarities between the treatment of the Duchess of Sussex and her daughter. It was pretty heartbreaking.

Winterborne74 · 20/12/2022 19:41

Didn’t hear the LBC call, but it’s the unashamed desire to degrade and publicly humiliate Markle that make Clarkson’s comments so horrifying. You really can’t imagine something like that being written about any man (except possibly convicted child murderers or similar). It’s utterly deranged.

angelico53 · 20/12/2022 19:50

That is so absolutely true, Winters.

MissLawls · 20/12/2022 19:51

@IReallyLikeCrows the nearby villages are lovely. Glad you liked it. It's very wild in places. Not pretty countryside but very dramatic and I love that.

I also heard the LBC interview with Caroline Flack's mum. Heartbreaking. When certain elements of the press take against a woman - and it nearly always is a woman - they really do show no mercy.

Exactly. Just awful.

Meanwhile, developments in Scotland tonight have me despairing, and more convinced than ever of the closed extremist ritualistic faith-based pseudoreligious nature of genderist ideology.

Yep have been following that thread also in despair.

Thecrackineverything · 20/12/2022 21:22

There is a widespread derangement and I am thinking a period of no social media (including mumsnet) is essential this christmas.

Gonners · 20/12/2022 21:44

I don't see any chance of this happening, but a period of no social media for anyone would probably do society no harm. I'm thinking maybe 6 months.

Winterborne74 · 20/12/2022 22:09

It’s like lockdown, isn’t it. Some may thrive with a prolonged social media outage, others will suffer. Many people depend on social media for the majority of their social interactions. If it allows people who otherwise would struggle to have meaningful social connections, then that’s a good thing.

I think I need to do social media better, rather than stopping it altogether. I find myself being drawn into being occupied by all manner of nonsense, rather than those things which improve the quality of my life - I like learning about new things and social media is great for developing new enthusiasms and following interesting new people. I don’t have a lot of mental energy to dedicate myself to research or projects, so following those who do can be really enriching for me. I’d miss that if it stopped.

Not just the press. I read the comments below the line on Suzanne Moore's latest article in the Telegraph. I don't know how long she'll be able to hang on there because the readers hate her.

bignosebignose · 20/12/2022 22:57

FFS, great work going on in Scotland. I know there’s a specific thread for this too but meh.

I was actually rather cheered by the responses to this:

IReallyLikeCrows · 21/12/2022 04:07

There is so much "information" out there claiming that transwomen are at more risk of murder due to transphobia that I started believing it. No longer.

Winterborne74 · 21/12/2022 10:30

Karen Ingala Smith’s blog deals with this well, in case you haven’t already seen it @IReallyLikeCrows

kareningalasmith.com/2021/04/21/counting-dead-trans-people/

I won’t be there unfortunately, but I hope this event passes peacefully. Fear it will be targeted though.

What's the policy on mumsnet regarding mentioning the works of Blanchard, say, or Lawrence?

In another place, there seemed to be a blanket that descended whenever I raised the issue of the need to understand and quantify any segmentation the trans population.

AFAIK, there is no restriction on discussions of the works of any particular writers/campaigners, so long as the wider (special) board rules are adhered to.

Thanks, kuc.

IReallyLikeCrows · 21/12/2022 12:00

That's a good article, @Winterborne74 . Thanks for the link. The conference looks really interesting although I doubt I'll get to it.

Wrt women's education I see that to no one's great surprise the Taliban have closed off university education to women as of immediately. Jeremy Clarkson should think about moving to Afghanistan given the similarities of his and the Taliban's views on women.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 21/12/2022 13:35

The only surprise with the Taliban is that they took this long.
