Well, here we are...

Have we all seen that Chimamanda Ngosi Adeche is doing this year's Reith Lectures? I'm really excited to hear from her. They will join the Hilary Mantel ones on my download for ever list. www.theguardian.com/books/2022/nov/28/chimamanda-ngozi-adichie-bbc-reith-lecture-freedom-truth-trans-rights

TheMostBeautifulDogInTheWorld · 28/11/2022 22:36

Yes I am so looking forward to that HelenD!

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/11/2022 22:42

The small extract in the Guardian this weekend was very good.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/11/2022 22:45

Notna Reith lecture but that Hilary Mantel book review on saints and girl's bodies ..... "no wonder some girls want out" should be compulsary reading.

murasaki · 28/11/2022 22:53

I love her, and have all her books. Zoe Williams was as per in that interview. 'I'm not having that' , really? She is worth a million Zoes.

Winterborne74 · 28/11/2022 22:56

But why should we say it, even if it’s true?’ At first, I was astonished at the absurdity of the question, then I realised what she meant. It didn’t matter what I actually believed.”

This is one of the nubs of it. Making uncomfortable truths unsayable. Am looking forward to the lectures too.

Must reread Mantel on Saints - it has faded in my memory.

”I’m not having that” was cringeworthy.

Hi folks. Couldn't quite keep my old username, but think I can prob see why. Been waiting for my 24 hours to expire, but have been following the thread, and will contine to do, and am heartened by the good things I've read upthread, with which I can only agree.

PoppySeedBagelRedux · 29/11/2022 06:45

It's lovely how many people are coming over - welcome all.

MiniPSB sent a link to the invitation to the 'celebration' in Brighton. Vegan and sober. The Puritans are back!

Hopefully the photo will be attached...

Ugh! I'm so glad I'm not young now, it doesn't look like much fun, does it.

Prof Stock's response to that on Twitter was "I'm never knowingly vegan and sober" which I thought was a nice retort to the fun-sucking ghouls "celebrating" her being driven out.

Winterborne74 · 29/11/2022 07:51

Oh so that’s what happens a year after a driving out, @bignosebignose!

Tricyrtis2022 · 29/11/2022 08:08

A very suitable response from Doc Stock there, bnbn!

Kucinghitam · 29/11/2022 08:27

Have you all seen this? The vibe fits right in with the Old Place.

As you say on the thread, I'm speechless.

Waitwhat23 · 29/11/2022 08:53

Re: lurkers - it has made me think of a thread which happened here last Christmas. We always talk about 'for the lurkers' when debating with clearly bad faith posters but didn't really know how many lurkers there were. A thread appeared, last Christmas, where lurkers (loads of them!) popped briefly onto the thread to show support and to say 'we are here and we are listening'. It was genuinely heartening.

That is lovely, just as it has been lovely to see so many lurkers pop in here to say they were following the thread that got us all here.

(((Lurkers)))

What an awful thing to do 😳

that’s incredibly sad

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 29/11/2022 09:13

Oh fuck my life

not you poppy

the photo with the poster of the sad party…didn’t realise that it wouldn’t show the photo

ExiledElsie · 29/11/2022 09:16

I always forget about the lurkers.

TassLeHoff · 29/11/2022 09:17

Hadley Freeman unshackled https://unherd.com/2022/11/mermaids-useful-idiots/

BezMills · 29/11/2022 09:18

I didn't lurk on The Thread at all. I do (and did) spend time reading the FWR boards on here, instead.
The chat I've read in the Old Country since Friday has been genuinely disheartening.
I'm posting on WDYDLN, but that's it. My feeling is that if the site is being zapped soon, I'd like to hang out with my people there a little before the end. But I'm even debating whether to do that tbh.
I didn't make a stand or tell anyone off or, well, anything. But that doesn't mean I didn't notice what went on and take note. I did.

TassLeHoff · 29/11/2022 09:20

And Hadley's tweet if you fancy amplifying it https://twitter.com/HadleyFreeman/status/1597511105294876672

ExiledElsie · 29/11/2022 09:21

That organisation is called Zero Tolerance. Zero Tolerance of reality?

Tricyrtis2022 · 29/11/2022 09:29

BezMills, would it be rude to ask who you are at the other place?

Tricyrtis2022 · 29/11/2022 09:30

Hadley Freeman is great, that's a good piece.
