Well, here we are...

OP posts:

The Archers thread turned out to be populated by pals I haven't interacted with in years, so that's very good indeed - I had no idea they'd come here.

It's great to see you here @DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry - you are a voice from the "old" yellow messageboards!

Tricyrtis2022 · 28/11/2022 16:53

BNBN, that's such a powerful thread from Femme Loves. I remember reading it last year and it's good to read it again.

ThucydidesJTT · 28/11/2022 17:11

Excellent. Hi all.

Former JTT user but frequented the Thread of Evil.

Hope everyone is adjusting and hopefully a more enlightened reformatted board emerged but I think JTS will pull the plug.

On Friday's statement:

I find it illogical and disgraceful.

The admins enforced a trial thread with specific guidelines and the thread has stuck to them. Indeed I think most deleted posts were abusive drive-bys by anti-GCs.

My suspicion is JTS is annoyed the admins have enforced the guidelines and not what he really wanted (a purge). Unable to force them to act he's threatening to nuke the site to incite the community to create a hostile atmosphere.

Ironically by leaving of your own accord that has been pre-empted hence the validation has not come. That's why I reckon the plug will still be pulled.

By not arranging an immediate purge the admins/community now also deserve to be purged. All hail the new order.

Everything else I want to say has been said here or there so will leave it at that beyond my absolute fury at the sneering of some Ill informed or deceitful posters. In particular Mr "I'm Neutral on the issue/purge anyone who hasn't left."

Hello Thucydides! Not much to disagree with there....

This is a thread from over a year ago but just turned up on my timeline as someone linked to it in response to a tweet about males in women's changing rooms, and the helpful advice just to avert one's gaze in that situation. Trigger warning, it's written by a survivor of childhood abuse. I couldn't neglect to post it here having read it.

I am inordinately fond of FemmeLoves on Twitter, and her wife Lauren. Two of the loveliest people around.

Tricyrtis2022 · 28/11/2022 18:06

A very interesting analysis, ThucydidesJTT, it will be interesting to see how things pan out. JTS pulling the plug anyway because he hasn't had the validation he craves could easily happen. He doesn't sound at all contented with life so anything is possible.

Saskihahaha · 28/11/2022 18:08

CitronVert22 · 28/11/2022 14:27

To be fair to J, I suspect a part of it is also that things moved on, the site doesn't mean to him what it did back in the day - does he even post any more? Now he is lumbered with this responsibility which he's moved on from coupled with the fact he worries it's making life harder for a group who do face real issues. And he feels responsible for that harm.

And the hoping the community would police people/consensus would be reached; isn't that what every discussion group wants? That the racist comes round to realising they are judging others unfairly, that the homophobe realises gay people just want to make a life with the person they love? It's that faith in the marketplace of ideas. It just doesn't always work out.

This is a very generous reading of the situation. I speak as one who stood on the outside of the thread in question, but when the site owner in the thread header declares he regards the subject and discussion of it, as a shit-stain on his site, it seemed to me, it was never going to turn out well. It's a shame as there was lots of good things on his site, but that just made me want to move back. Anyway, good luck to them all, and agree with all you have all been saying. I was really taken aback by some of them, esp. the dairy man. Hey ho.

Ginmonkeyagain · 28/11/2022 18:15

People were trying to save themselves abd the site. I get that impulse.

But that choice has had ramifications. TBH I could have lived with not being able to discuss sex and gender issues. But I cannot live with what happened next. I cannot unread what I read and cannot trust a community that failed to support decent, longstanding posters and in some case alllowed abuse of those posters, in a naked act of self preservation.

Do it to Julia indeed.

ThucydidesJTT · 28/11/2022 18:20

Amazingly instead of credit for decamping the jumpers are being criticized for being unable to accept other people's opinions and for not going quietly.

The community has just destroyed the village to save it.

GhostOrchid · 28/11/2022 18:22

@druscilla

Plenty GC people on FU although a kind of unspoken agreement not to discuss it, and I don’t think anyone is changing anyone else’s mind. But I think most people on both sides would recognise there is at least a nuanced issue there.

sorry… I don’t know how to quote a post.

Rachael Hamilton (Scottish Conservatives MSP) has formally asked Nicola Sturgeon to suspend the GRR bill until Holyrood can properly consider the UN intervention.

(Another apology to Mumsnet regulars - I am sure there are separate threads on things as they come up, and we will get used to using them - but the Previous Place corralled all discussion to just one thread and I think it may take us a while to get out of the habit of bringing in all sorts of things to this one place).

On the desktop website version, there are 3 dots in the lower right corner of each post - if you click on that for the post in question, one of the options is "quote".

It's all or nothing though - you don't get to just include one paragraph that you're responding to.

GhostOrchid · 28/11/2022 18:36

Thank you! btw… I really liked and agreed with your post about people not wanting to see it because they don’t want to look because they might agree.

OneSugar1 · 28/11/2022 18:38

Understandably, there’s been a lot of sadness on this thread today. When that sadness has abated, I hope you start to get really fucking angry because you’ve been royally thrown under a fucking bus.

This popped up on my Twitter earlier, seems apt:

Don't get me wrong, I'm fucking furious. As others have said, the toxicity has been laid bare for all who wish to see it.

But for my part (apart from discussions on these couple of relevant MN threads to blow off some steam) I refuse to let those cowardly dissembling pious frauds live rent-free in my head.

OneSugar1 · 28/11/2022 19:27

I’m very glad to hear that Kucinghitam. Something something about bitterness etc etc, anger burns it clean. Onwards and upwards.

Quite, some of the "good sorts" turned out to be not quite so good after all. A few nice surprises in who stood up for you all as well though.

VaginaRegina · 28/11/2022 21:06

And also very interesting to have our suspicions that the thread had a lot of mostly sympathetic lurkers confirmed!

weaseleyes · 28/11/2022 21:19

Yes, I was a sympathetic lurker and now feel bad I didn't post in solidarity.

I get that to J and others a failure to agree that TWAW etc genuinely seems bigoted and homophobic, even though I think they're completely wrong. And I can even understand why some posters who hadn't read the thread might take such pronouncements at face value, especially if they're not that immersed in the topic. But what I can't really accept is that once they could see who these demonised posters were that were leaving, posters whom they'd known for 20 years, they didn't even think for a moment there might be more than perspective on it.

Kerebus · 28/11/2022 21:34

The poster formally known as Tagyourit here (but able to use my original GUT username! Yay). I've become much more angry about how this has been dealt with than I was originally, the whole framing of the GC Feminists on the thread of shame as right wing bigots and the guilt by association is straight from the TRA playbook. The reaction from many posters I thought were sound has been utterly unedifying (I've unfriended on FB one in particular) and certain posters can be seen posturing all over the place treating this utter Sh*tshow as some kind of great moral victory for them personally. I'm sticking around on the old site out of morbid curiosity about how it all ends but I think I'll eschew any of the lifeboats, they'll all and up in infighting and survivors be eating each other within 12 months...

Good to see you - I can also recommend this exiles chit chat thread for general banter, etc.

But the non-sympathetic lurkers probably haven't followed here and also probably didn't read all that much, because who wants to read something constantly that you find appalling? So there's some self selecting going on.
