Just been sent this video after I said I thought JK is pretty fierce and I have a lot of respect for her.

My initial feeling is it's a big smear campaign and much may be false or exaggerated? Not sure what to respond to them. Is there a quick way to debunk all or much of it?

I wouldn't bother, personally. They could look it up themselves if they wanted to. Just tell them you'll get back to them in a year and they can apologise then

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 18/10/2022 18:12

I am not going to listen to twenty minutes of that lol, I just moved the pointer forward to a random place and heard the following:

"This is just my subjective view but I thought she was very aggressive and unreasonable on Twitter and in my opinion she was motivated not by concern for women's rights but by hatred and disgust"

and then I turned it off. What a self-important pompous misogynist windbag. In my opinion, which is more valid than his because I'm not a dumbass, this man is not motivated by concern for anyone's rights but by hatred of women and rage that he can't make a successful powerful woman shut up. Ignore, and reconsider your relationship with the person who sent it to you. Anyone who can seriously think this is worth paying attention to is not worthy of your time and respect.

lifeinthelastlane · 18/10/2022 18:12

I managed 5 minutes of that, why are you letting it get to you? So MB misgendered people - she would have said she was speaking the truth (what was that great quote of hers?)

lifeinthelastlane · 18/10/2022 18:13

Ah yes, I'd rather be rude than a fucking liar.

CrossStichQueen · 18/10/2022 18:16

Who sent you the video?

RoseslnTheHospital · 18/10/2022 18:22

Why would someone send you a half hour long video, rather than outline their issues directly themselves?? It's a technique to stop you responding fully, by making it a massive task to go through the transcript or watch the video whilst making notes on rebuttals.

I'd ignore it and suggest that whoever sent it to you instead tries to summarise it themselves or highlights the points they are wanting to put to you before you will respond.

AutumnCrow · 18/10/2022 18:24

I clicked and flicked through this randomly and three of the first words that I heard were, 'Christian', 'eugenics' and 'Nazi'.

That's the game isn't it, of the MRAs - to smear women who say 'no' as simultaneously part of the third reich and American evangelicalism?

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 18/10/2022 18:29

I don't care if someone misgenders another person, because to me, they're just being honest. I wouldn't call a man a woman just because he feels like one, whatever that means. Why do you need to respond to them? If anything ask them to speak for themselves, don't just send a video, as a pp said.

Whatiswrongwithmyknee · 18/10/2022 18:50

I'm always so amazed that people can so stunningly fail to look in their own backyard. Do they have no idea what some of the TRAs are saying and doing to women? Do they not see that they are the right-wing fascists?

Eddie Izzard proudly talks about intimidating young girls when invading their spaces and they're proud of Eddie as a figurehead. Stonewall is not just the TRAs friend, it is their mentor. All the time pulling this together and yet no time to define key terms. Pathetic.

FlorettaB · 18/10/2022 18:51

They have a point. There are some terrifying people out there whose views overlap with those of gender critical feminists only when it comes to this specific issue. I know that many of the posters in this section believe that this single issue is so important that it comes above anything else and that you should take your allies where you can find them. I don’t believe that.

I don’t think that gender critical feminists should share platforms with proud racists, anti-abortionists and those who view homosexuality as abhorrent. I know that others disagree but, for me, it damages the credibility of those involved. I’m not talking about The Conservative Party, I’m talking about the US far right and faith based anti abortion groups who lie to women and say that having an abortion will give them cancer.

nilsmousehammer · 18/10/2022 18:52

Oh whatever.

TheKeatingFive · 18/10/2022 19:02

And what specifically are people referencing here? What platform?

teawamutu · 18/10/2022 19:05

I knew this would be the general tone. I just knew it.

As JKR herself once said - distinct echoes of I Saw Goody Rowling Looking At the Milk Funny.

FlorettaB · 18/10/2022 19:13

If you watch the video you’ll see links mentioned. In some ways it’s a natural consequence of the activity to TRAs. Gender critical women are being deplatformed by all the universities, local councils and theatres are being lobbied not to allow bookings for them to speak, venues that do take bookings are being threatened with violence. What’s left are organisations that have no fear of alienating the gay community because they are actively homophobic.

Smilelesstalkmore · 18/10/2022 19:13

I don't know why TRAs are going down this route.

On their 'side' they have, for starters:

Peter Tatchell - on record as saying he thinks adults having sex with 9 year olds is OK in specific circumstances.

Jacob Breslow - gave a talk at a conferences for paedos and wrote something in his blog which heavily implied that he himself is a paedophile.

Vaush - has said stuff about sex with underage girls being OK.

So when are the TRActivists going to admit the presence of some very unsavoury supporters of their campaign. How about Gordon Pike one of the creators of the policy which has allowed male sex offenders to be accommodated in Scottish Women's Prisons , now serving at HM's pleasure for having images of children being raped. Shall I continue?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 18/10/2022 19:22

Has your "friend" sent you anything condemning those allegedly representing trans people - the paedophiles & those with without boundaries
(see children's charities), the sex offenders (see the Women and Equalities Committee), the porn obsessed men self IDing as women (Girl Guides), the abusers and those who repeatedly issue rape, death and bomb threats against women (see outside any feminist meeting), the VAWG transwoman rep who can't manage a train journey without accessing porn - to mention just a few.

Thought not.
You need a better quality of friends if this is the best they can muster.

JustStopOilyPoshKids · 18/10/2022 19:31

I actually watched all of this tedious video at the weekend. Bet the fella has made another one since now that JK has HOUNDED national treasure Graham Norton off Twitter for his innocuous 'ask trans people about trans stuff' remark. Seriously- I think this claim is absurd and bobbins but prob more frothin worthy than any of the BS in this video.

To summarise:
JK followed Magdalen Berns. Who said all these terrible things! AKA blunt and angry but not stuff I'd disagree with. I found some of the quoted comments funny. The video presenter can barely speak them for disgusted exhales. I guess we see this v differently and there's not gonna be owt in this video to convince me JK is a demon.

And that pretty much was the gist of it.

Tenuous claims that JK is friends with people who shared a platform with reactionary folk... By "shared a platform with" that could mean debated with.

Some bollocks re a "sending hugs x" message to Caroline Farrow who is a Catholic and is opposed to abortion and gay marriage. Which obv JK is totes on board with as she hasn't apologised/ condemned CF/ self flagilated

Lather. Rinse. Repeat same guilt by association allegations. Yawn!

PerkyBlinder · 18/10/2022 20:02

CrossStichQueen · 18/10/2022 18:16

Who sent you the video?

A colleague who is full on TWAW but I just don't think they've thought that hard so I asked why they thought JK was problematic as I thought she was brilliant.

That's it perfectly! It's like. I saw her sitting with so and so so that makes her a witch but they completely ignore her actual deeds and words.

Women have battled despite shaming for centuries.

The truth will out.

WolverineBlueyy · 18/10/2022 21:25

You can guess just from the title exactly what the person who made it will be trying to imply and that it will be an emotive, overdramatic fact-free zone. Is that an anime avatar as well? Think it can safely be said it's not worth giving them the time of day.

RealFeminist · 18/10/2022 21:43

LOOKS AWFUL AND THATS EVEN WITHOOT WATCHING IT DISGRACEFUL

BrokeAsABone · 18/10/2022 21:51

TRAs are completely obsessed with a woman who cannot be cancelled. They are trying to make it happen when she has never once said anything bad. She actually gives a shit about them and wants better than the likes of Norton paying for unnecessary and disfiguring surgery. And they hate it because she is advocating for proper care for children under the influence of this horrendous cult.

How woman hating does this movement have to get before people see it for what it is?
