Continuation thread from Antipodean fruit grower statement

A statement from the owner reads in part:

Downtime Update as of August 26th, 2022

"What I fear more than losing my site, being sued, or dealing with police is living in a world where [REDACTED] can [REDACTED] little boys and girls into [REDACTED] and [REDACTED], while normal people are not allowed to even discuss it.

The mob has already planned subsequent targets. Should we stay down, they will then attack 'gender critical' communities - especially those ran by and for women. No place can exist online which allows criticism of their [REDACTED], and nothing would excite them more than this power and domination struggle being inflicted on a female space instead."

I would link to the statement on the Internet Archive aka "Wayback Machine" but it has made all pages archived from the relevant site unsearchable (or deleted?).

Mumsnet does not permit links to the site Archive Today so that is out too.

"Doxxing is not illegal"

It can be depending on context, right?

GingerPCatt · 26/10/2022 18:24

As far as I know, it’s legal here and the US. There’s is a huge amount of
info available online about most people. It’s like the yellow pages back in the old days.
In what context would it be illegal?

Bosky · 27/10/2022 02:53

MargaritaPie · 26/10/2022 12:33

"K_ffals"

Is this a game of Hangman? What fun, can I have an 'e'?

Good job this isn't Twitter - you'd have been mass-reported for misgendering and soliciting supply of illegal drugs by now.

So why were some people (this includes users of MN) so upset when JK Rowling was "doxed"? At the time pictures of her home and the address were on tourist websites for everyone to see.

Christ, it's like talking to a child.

Because something doesn't have to be illegal for it to be crap, and that was crap. She was getting threatened with bombs and then her address with people standing outside it was posted online.

That's crap.

If it was against the law, they would've been prosecuted for fuck's sake.

lapasion · 28/10/2022 00:34

I don’t think the issue was so much that JK’s address was revealed, because it was already out there, but rather that people showed up at her house and took photos. People that were clearly in disagreement with her views and could have been perceived as threatening.

As far as I know, sites like KF don’t generally encourage people to do real world visits to the homes of people they dox.

"Pictures of her home and the address were on tourist websites for everyone to see"

This seems to be disputed as there was much talk of her Perthshire address being public, being an estate, but her Edinburgh address being private and NOT on any "tourist trails".

For example:

Comprehensive Guide to the Top Harry Potter Sites in Edinburgh Scotland
independenttravelcats.com/guide-top-harry-potter-sites-in-edinburgh-scotland-jk-rowling/

What does it have to say about where JK Rowling lives?

Rowling and her family now live behind high hedges in the Edinburgh area of Branton.

Just note that J. K. Rowling and her family enjoy their privacy as do the people who live in her former residences, and you are wise to respect this. I decided not to publish any of the actual addresses (or photos) of her former or current residences out of both respect for those who live in them and for the fact that none are open to the public so there isn’t much to see at any of the locations.

I was able to find references to the street that she lives on but none were on "tourist websites" and none cited her full address.

Update from JM

“Small update: I've gotten access to the devices after losing Internet via Zayo. I'm getting copies of everything now. Tomorrow I'll begin my work rebuilding the site from scratch again.

There's a battleplan ready to go. The site will no longer be centralized on a single server. I intended to do that a while ago but I've never had an opportunity, so I'm doing it now. This means that even if one host physically unplugs all our shit we will still have others. I intend to get Tor working first, and its availability will be higher with our new setup, but the clearnet will come up soon too.

As for the Clearnet, a bunch of people have decided to help out and I have a strategy for keeping it up. It will take a lot for it to go down again completely.

In 2021, I wrote an article called "Where the Sidewalk Ends" explaining what problems I expected in the future. It's funny to read in retrospect.

madattheinternet.substack.com/p/where-the-sidewalk-ends-the-death

As far as I'm concerned, this is it. The question of "can a bunch of [redacted and replaced with] TRAs and journos cry their way into completely censoring something from the Internet" will be answered by the end of the year.”

I am rooting for Josh and the Farms - I hate bully boy tactics so I hope he prevails.

Funnily enough, it’s people like PIE, LostandConfused and their ilk on twatteratti that really made me take an interest and actually go see what all the KF brouhaha was about. Now here we are, me championing what was (to me) a little known resource of backed up, archived, and verified info.

Cheers chaps!

I’m with you. I’d never really heard of the farms until certain posters on here pointed me to it. I don’t agree with everything said on there but I do agree they should have the right to see it. It’s a site you need to log on to so if you don’t liege it don’t log on

kittensinthekitchen · 28/10/2022 08:19

This whole saga has been a perfect example of cancel culture and of people getting involved in a "cause" they don't understand or bother to fact check.

GingerPCatt · 28/10/2022 08:26

It’s the death threats not the doxxing that’s the issue.

but you know that don’t you. We’ve been through this before on this thread.

Shall we start the ‘you’re all fascists and right wing’ dance again if we’re repeating our selves here? You can start…

MargaritaPie · 28/10/2022 13:04

"but rather that people showed up at her house and took photos"

You do realise fans have been doing that for years? They might have been taken down by now but also at the time there were Youtube videos of fans taking a video of Rowling's Edinburgh enormous castle/mansion (including its name) and uploading it.

Her address is a secret to noone.

Asdavaluesausage · 28/10/2022 13:07

So if you’re ok with TRA doing it @MargaritaPie and it’s no big deal, why are you angry at KF for doing the sane thing? Is it because they’re way better at it than the amateur TRA attempts or are you scared they’ll find you out?

MargaritaPie · 28/10/2022 13:08

re b*mb threats, just a couple weeks ago a Twitter user with a Tala avatar (a genderless alien used by a children's library which MF spent 5 days complaining about) received such a threat via DM. The perp prove they knew the victim's address and identified themselves as a Rowling supporter and the threat included instruction to "leave JK Rowling alone".

MargaritaPie · 28/10/2022 13:09

"It’s the death threats not the doxxing that’s the issue"

Just my opinion but I don't think "doxxing" is an issue for a celeb who lives in a castle which is featured on tourist websites for the world to see.

Would it be doxxing to say the Royal Family live at Buckingham Palace? Should tourists be turning up there every day to take photos and selfies?

I was unaware there's a "competition" over who can be the best at being a criminal.

Uh huh. Sure @MargaritaPie the perp. ‘Identified themselves’. No TRA would ever pretend to be a JK supporter to try to throw shit. Shows the depth
og their argument is shallower than Nicola sturgeons gene pool.

You do know people lie on the Internet right?

ItsLateHumpty · 28/10/2022 13:24

Threats via DM you say….. hmmm 🤔 I call chinny reckon to the veracity of that claim. Bring the receipts PIE.
Oh that’s right, you can’t.

PS I’m pretty sure you can type the whole word ‘bomb’ without the sky falling in.
Its pretty much what most all of your gotcha posts fall under.

Asdavaluesausage · 28/10/2022 13:26

@ItsLateHumpty nooo say it’s not so! Is @MargaritaPie making wild accusations with no receipts? That’s so out of character. 😂😂😂

Wow.

Spectacular swivel for someone who previously argued that KF should be taken off the internet for hosting publicly available info.

I hope the police were helpful. It sounds like it was someone they knew, unless it was a famous person. As you know, GC women get threats all the time so we have sympathy with anyone being threatened with violence for their views, but JK Rowling has 14 million followers and she isn't responsible for what they do. The alien stuff was about Maya Forstater, not JKR, so I suspect that's not the whole story. No excuse for violent threats though, I'm sure we can agree on that, Marg.

Yes Marge that’s my point. Knowing where someone lives isn’t the issue, sending some one death threats it.
Also, having strangers show up
at your house to take pictures which include your address hits a bit differently when you’ve been sent thousands of death threats.
I would find it odd if randoms took pictures outside my house, but if I had been receiving death threats I would contact the police. See the difference is the threats.

Also, now that we’ve agreed on something, are you a right wing fascist too?

MargaritaPie · 28/10/2022 19:20

"I would find it odd if randoms took pictures outside my house,"

So would I, but that's because I'm non-famous and live in a normal boring common-person's house.

However If I become a billionaire, bought a castle and listed it on tourist websites I wouldn't find it odd at all if people turned up to take photos.

MargaritaPie · 28/10/2022 19:21

Politically I think I'm probably left-wing.

Now read the rest of the sentence. If you had been receiving death threats would you feel differently to randoms taking pictures outside your house?

Im left wing as well. We have so much in common!
