"Drag queens are (typically, at any rate) over-the-top parodies of women: they are more gender-rigid than gender-fluid, for goodness’ sake"

Talk about a mask off moment.

THAT IS WHAT WE HAVE BEEN SAYING. You uphold regressive and insulting sex stereotypes and we don’t fucking like it or want children exposed to it.

But of course, he’s not talking to is he? He’s talking to the right wing men. Telling them they should like drag queens reading to children, because they’re putting women in their place.

DarkDayforMN · 29/07/2022 14:54

he’s not talking to us^, is he?

Megan1992xx · 29/07/2022 06:47

Drag queens have no place near or with children.

So no more pantomimes dames then ?

NoCharm · 29/07/2022 15:08

I'm not a fan of drag & wish it wasn't pushed at kids so much but I'd rather ignore it than be associated with some of the idiots protesting it.

They’re just men dressing up as women FGS! Shakespeare, anyone?

In the same was as some white people black-up to pretend to be non-white.

It’s very strange how this is seen as wrong but a man pretending to be a woman is OK.

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 29/07/2022 15:10

RTFT - we've covered that. Do keep up.

Wellies54 · 29/07/2022 15:15

Part of the problem with this is that it is such a gift to the right wing protesters. It is clearly ( in my opinion) adult entertainment and not appropriate as ' diversity and inclusion ' for young children (if for no other reason that the money could be spent on something far more high quality). But because ordinary mum's and dad's are speaking out too the extremists feel emboldened and it will end up being a backward step for genuine acceptance and tolerance.

Yup it's definitely the quiet part out loud. But the AUDACITY to think you're being a lovely dovely all inclusive nice as pie progressive when writing shit like that in a paper and then it being PUBLISHED like it's the epitome of social justice. URGH I've been seething about it since I saw it.

VestofAbsurdity · 29/07/2022 15:21

Why would only conservatives have a problem with it? Aren't decent people allowed to have a problem with the specifics without being written off as dumb reactionaries?

Are you labelling small 'c' conservatives as dumb reactionaries? and not decent people?

Saw an article in the Independent about protesting of DQST (Adie H D?) which said it's just a parody of women!

Very telling - it's perfectly acceptable to mockingly parody women, how very enlightened - what Century are we in again? Misogyny never goes away does it? You can really see who are regarded with contempt and therefore deserving of mocking and parody and then they have the brass neck to claim the likes of Aida H Dee are the most oppressed.

I didn't need to see that, Norden, thanks 😩

Why doesn't mumsnet have a vomitting emoji?!

I think that poster is speaking in the voice of the article writer...who is writing people off as conservatives when really the quality driving the resistance could be 'decency', which is a trait not limited to a particular political persuasion (IMO).

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/07/2022 15:36

You can find the protestors' own videos on twitter, where they are shouting various dogwhistles about how the world is run by a small cabal of ultra wealthy paedophiles intent on a new world order.

I mean they are tin-foil hat wearing right-wingers. But that bit isn't looking as fantastical as once it was, is it?

Franca123 · 29/07/2022 15:45

Oh dear. I just put the reference to right wing groups together. It's because q anon lunes think that paedophiles run the world. Then you see DQST! The nut jobs are looking less nutty. FML.

DarkDayforMN · 29/07/2022 15:51

It's because q anon lunes think that paedophiles run the world.

I'm fully convinced that qanon is a (very successful) psyop to make people who point out that pedophile conspiracies among powerful people actually exist look like nutters.

AmericanStickInsect · 29/07/2022 14:39

Saw an article in the Independent about protesting of DQST (Adie H D?) which said it's just a parody of women! And it actually upholds gender stereotypes rather than breaks them! The implication being you conservative bigots should be pleased??!
Parodying women...which about half the kids at that story time will grow up to be, and all of them will interact with. Upholding stereotypes...that harm every child there, but those whose adult form you are 'parodying' especially. Why would anyone be ok with that?! Why would only conservatives have a problem with it? Aren't decent people allowed to have a problem with the specifics without being written off as dumb reactionaries?

It's typical in a way. There is a very weird assumption by certain political progressives that conservatives as a group are very keen on gender stereotyping, want all women to wear skirts, and basically look like Tammy Faye Baker.

MangyInseam · 29/07/2022 16:08

I'd be shocked if there is not a paedophile version of Jeffery Epstein and a network of such people who traffic in children. In fact psychopaths may be more likely than average to be extremely wealthy.

Do they "rule the world," not in the sense of being some cabal in charge of everything. Lots of powerful people aren't paedophiles. Are they powerful enough to hide their own activities and try and influence politics, yes for sure.

The reason this kind of thing works is because people accept this idiotic paradigm that if extremists have an issue with something, no matter how sensible, if you also oppose that thing you are somehow also extremists.

All you are doing is strengthening that view. It's a gift to those who want more leeway to implicate those who disagree with them with some taboo faction.

Panto Dames, Justin in Gigglebiz… performers. That’s all.

Does Justin have a facebook account where he promotes his children's shows to parents and children and images like this?

Or does he separate his work and his personal life?

Franca123 · 29/07/2022 16:29

@DarkDayforMN tbf there is enough men with peadophillic urges to make this not a totally insane theory. If its 1 percent of men, then that's enough people to work on getting some crazy movement like q anon off the ground. Or am I just being a tin hat person now?!

"I've never seen a panto where the dame had a semi."
is the perfect rebuttal to all this tosh

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 29/07/2022 16:40

You have to wonder what the pictures that didn't make the cut were like.

You can see the backs of children's heads in that picture. They're probably sitting on the floor. What kind of view did they have, seeing him in that outfit in person?

Franca123 · 29/07/2022 16:44

"I've never seen a panto where the dame had a semi."

Definitely the best thing said on the Internet this week.
