OK to be seen by children in RL in a library. Not OK to be posted on a thread about it? That does seem odd.

On threads passim, one fan of drag went into paroxysms of accusations about how she had been unable to see anything in the photo as hosted on MN without zooming in, and therefore there could be no issue.

She seemed to be unable to grasp that these were photos taken during events where children were present in person. If a costume malfunction is visible in a digital photo on a tiny phone screen, even if your screen size means you have to zoom in to see it, then it would have been visible in real life to the people attending the event. Especially any children present, as this type of costume malfunction is at the eye-height of a young child.

And yes, you can see the backs of children's heads in the picture P××k News uploaded to twitter.

There are some VERY interesting insights into sexual predation from Dr Deborah Soh's podcast. Dr Soh is a Canadian expert scientific researcher into sexual response, sex, and sexuality. Her podcasts are fascinating - I've just listened to a very civil open conversation with someone who disagrees with her approach, and they discuss where their common ground is, and how & where they differ.

But her bottom line about sexual predators, and Drag Queen Story time (also a thing in north America), is that as a society we should be very watchful of anyone (and she includes female teachers in this) who goes into an area of work or a hobby, where they are interacting with children not their own.

Personally I find this an extreme viewpoint, but her argument is that she's worked with sexual predators and sexual criminals, and her advice comes from that work and her experience of interacting with sexual predators.

The Dr Deborah Soh Podcast - wherever you get your podcasts (as they say).

popularised by Graham Linehan.

Popularised by Linehan?

He says he invented it 😅

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 02/08/2022 18:22

He says he invented it

No he doesn’t. What a silly thing to say (you not Glinner, obviously he never claimed to invent the word groomer.) I think he genuinely invented “ok groomer” though.

Blahaj · 02/08/2022 18:29

I think he genuinely invented “ok groomer” though.

Sorry, that's what I was referring to.

Blahaj · 02/08/2022 18:31

The word obviously goes back to the 70's and 80's when it was anti-gay slur used mainly against homosexual men.

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 02/08/2022 18:50

in case anyone reading was in any doubt, this is bullshit. Shockingly homophobic bullshit at that, given that the word was developed to describe the behaviours of child sexual predators.

You are posting like someone born post 1995, if not post 2001.

In case this seems opaque, I am saying that you are wrong.

Here are some images of pantomime dames. They are very different from drag queens. They refer back to historic costumes, and are not sexualised parodies if women.

And in a pantomime they are a short comedic act forming an interlude within main story. The story and the main characters are the dominating feature.(Not that all children like them anyway.)

It is irritating to keep hearing how drag queens are ‘just pantomime dames’.

I can't remember if it was it on here or elsewhere, where a lecture given to someone training to be a social worker. It opened up by telling all the students to look around the room because at least one of their fellow students was a only there to gain access to children through the job.

Look at a lot of the youth movements which had child sex abuse "problems" the abuser was usually the "nice" "popular" etc predator who joined the organisation for ease of access to other people's children.

Totally agree, if you can't see the difference between Justin Fletcher as Aunt Polly and a performer like Flo Job then you've switched your brain off.

I see the Times is determined to only focus on the males who object to this.

It would be nice if the Headline Editor was a little professional and actually read Tom's story before writing BS misleading headlines.

This will be the narative its ok to push adult sexuality into childrens spaces because its "inclusiveness".

Involving children in adult male sexualised entertainment is fine because

The Times article implies that anyone contacting their MP or council about DQSH is connected to an anti-vax group called Outreach Worldwide.

A conspiracist collective called Outreach WorldWide has been one of the main drivers of the campaign against DQSH.

Since turning its attention to DQSH the group has encouraged its 3,500 members to book places at the readings to try to shut them down. Activists from the group’s 37 regional teams are also advised to complain to their local library and contact their councillors and MPs to get the event cancelled.

It's as Gluck outlined, It's a strategy to discredit the women who brought an end to previous safeguarding issues when there was push to dismantle them from the 1970s-90s.

Now, the strategy was to label women as TERFs and transphobes. As more people are seeing through that, the angle that is gaining prominence is to yoke women to those who seize upon any issue to exploit, whether those are the authoritarian far-left or far-right.

Sowing suspicion and the soft whisper of association is enough to frighten away MPs who should know better and make them overlook the women who've been in this space for many years.

How are women to raise their concerns with an MP other than by letter or an appointment in a constituency?

Yes, it is interesting to see that Aida H D is not even following the modesty costume rules of for-adult Drag Queens (of course they should only ever be for adults).

How anyone can compare him to a pantomime dame is something I can’t fathom anyway.

FallOutPloy · 08/08/2022 17:39

I need to stop looking at twitter. I can't comment on anything (because I'm a teacher, and any kind of remotely controversial social media presence is a hard no) and it gives me the absolute rage seeing a total pile-on when someone dares to say something hideously offensive like "we should really pay close attention to anyone who seeks to work with children"

I'm a teacher. I have chosen to work with children. Of course we should closely monitor anyone and everyone who is seeking access to young children!! Every single year, we have to do safeguarding training, part of which very specifically goes through cases of abuse from teachers/other school staff (not from my actual school, I hasten to add!) I don't know anyone who considers that training session to be an attack on the teaching community 🙄
